Apple Reportedly Trying 4.7- and 5.7-Inch Screens On iPhones Next Year, Cheaper Model Coming In Fall

iphone5smock

Apple is looking at various changes to its iPhone lineup over the course of the next year, according to a new report from Reuters, including two sizes of larger smartphone devices, in both a 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch flavor. The “phablet” plans are also being considered alongside a less expensive iPhone model, which is slated to begin production next month, according to Reuters’ sources, after a brief delay as Apple attempts to get the colors right for the new plastic-backed device.

The cheaper iPhone would be launching in September following full production kicking off in August, according to some of Reuters’ sources, with an initial shipment target of around 20 million low-cost devices for the holiday quarter next year. The report details echo what we’ve heard from other sources recently, including from fairly accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who previously shared reports of multi-color options for the cheaper iPhone, with a thin plastic case and the same 4-inch screen as the iPhone 5. Reuters adds that it should cost around $ 99 when it launches, and that its release timeline might be pushed back by as much of a year.

Reports of the low-cost iPhone have been making the rounds in more or less reliable circles for a while now, which is the more interesting component of this new report. Other sources have reported that Apple is looking at bigger-screened devices, so-called “phablets” to compete with similar offerings from Android smartphone manufacturers, including the Galaxy Note line from Samsung. But even Apple’s flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5, lags behind most competing general-purpose non-phablet devices like the HTC One and Galaxy S4 in terms of screen size at 4-inches.

Apple’s big-screen iPhone plans are less evolved than those for its low cost device, the report claims, with one of Reuters’ sources suggesting that we could still see the plans shift considerably before anything reaches a production stage. Apple has discussed the idea with production partners, but has not set any kind of timeframe for test production or launch as of yet. Reuters says that Apple is considering the different screen sizes comes as there’s increased pressure to field more than one device a year.

Apple CEO Tim Cook suggested that we might see a larger iPhone when the trade-offs of battery life, screen quality, color reproduction and other failings brought about would be possible to counteract, speaking at the recent AllThingsD D11 conference. He did admit that some consumers are interested in those devices, however, so it’s likely that these reports come from Apple’s attempts to overcome those limitations with engineering. Plenty of Apple products don’t make it past the testing phase, however, so while you can be sure Apple is experimenting with big displays for iPhone, you can’t be equally sure we’ll ever see one. Still, Cook’s guidance to consumers and media that they can look for big product launches in the fall and through next year specifically do line up with the timing of possible iOS phablet launches reported by Reuters today.

LG shows off its first production curved OLED TV, will start shipping soon

LG announced in April that it’s bringing a 55-inch curved OLED HDTV to market, and it appears that time is almost here. According to the machine translated press release, shipments of the 15 million won ($ 13,500) display will start in a few days. Plant staff are pictured around one of the first mass produced 55EA9800 TVs, which weigh just 17kg and have a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) frame. We first got our eyes on the screens at CES, with their unusual shape that LG says helps keep all parts of the screen an equal distance from the viewer — check out a few more pics in the gallery below.

MSI refreshes its GT and GE gaming laptops, teases a new 14-inch model (hands-on)

MSI refreshes its GT and GE gaming laptops, teases a new 14-inch model (hands-on)

MSI’s had a busy couple weeks: first it started selling a pair of laptops with AMD chips inside, and then it unveiled a flagship notebook with Haswell. Now, to complete the trilogy, the company’s refreshing the other models in its range. Starting with the GT series, the existing GT70 and GT60 are both getting a quad-core, 3.2GHz Core i7-4200MQ CPU with a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX780M GPU or a 3GB GTX770M. Though the chipsets are the same, however, the 17-incher makes room for more robust internals, including a max of 32GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD paired with up to three 128GB SSDs arranged in a RAID 0 setup. The 15-inch version, meanwhile, tops out at 16GB of RAM with a single 128GB SSD and 1TB hard drive. If 8.6 or even 7.7 pounds is too heavy for yours tastes, you might prefer the slim GE series, where both the 15- and 17-inch models weigh in at less than six pounds. In exchange for a lighter design, of course, you get slightly inferior specs: a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX765 GPU, 750GB hard drives, 8GB to 12GB of RAM and six-cell batteries, compared with a nine-cells on the beefier GT models. For what it’s worth, though, most configurations have the same 3.2GHz Core i7 processor. Additionally, the GE notebooks have been refreshed with backlit keyboards, but you still won’t get the full rainbow effect as on the GTs. In the US, at least, starting prices are as follows: $ 1,500 for the GT70 and GT60, $ 1,400 for the GE70 and $ 1,000 for the GE60.

Finally, MSI is also showing off a 14-inch model, the GE40, which has an altogether different industrial design than the other GEs, with small red lights on the lid meant to look like devil’s eyes. (Or wings. Whatever.) At 4.4 pounds and 1.14 inch thick, it’s an obvious competitor to the Alienware M14x. No word yet on pricing or availability, but MSI has preliminarily said it will boast a 2.9GHz Core i7-4702MQ CPU, 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M GPU, 8GB of RAM and a battery rated for three hours. The screen will be a 1,600 x 900 non-IPS panel with an anti-glare matte finish. Storage-wise, you’re looking at a 128GB and 750GB SSD, or just the 750-gig HDD. Again, MSI hasn’t said when it’ll ship, but for now we’ve got hands on-photos of the GE40 (and those other machines, too) after the break.

The new Razer Blade: hands-on with the 14-inch model

2013-05-30_15-18-07-1020_large

The Razer Blade laptop line, which is just a year old and already gone through one needed revision, has been built on the promise of significant gaming power in a thin chassis. But while the first two generations of Blades have been svelte for a 17-inch laptop, they’ve left us wanting for a laptop that’s more refined and even a bit thinner. The new 14-inch Blade, which Razer unveiled on Thursday, just might be the device we were hoping for last year. The MacBook stylings are still in full force, particularly the nigh-identical lid and hinge, but they seem to be serving Razer well here: the 14-inch Blade is indeed thin, light, feels premium and incredibly solid, and appears to be running games quite well for a laptop this svelte, with a…

5-Million Piece Full Size LEGO X-Wing Fighter Model

full-size-lego-xwing-1.jpg

This is the 5,335,200-piece LEGO X-wing fighter, a full-scale version of the 560-piece set the company actually sells. It’s not pure LEGO though, it has a steel armature inside so the whole nose doesn’t fall off when some tourist turns around and farts at the thing. Facts and figures:

Weighs 45,979.61 pounds (including bricks and steel infrastructure)

Height: 11 feet / 3.35 meters
Length: 43 feet / 13.1 meters
Wingspan: 44 feet / 13.44 meters
32 builders spent 17,336 hours (about 4 months) to construct

Wow — 5,335,200 LEGO pieces, that’s a lot of plastic. And as much as I love the end result and want it in my backyard so I can play space everyday and die happy, I can’t help but wonder if that plastic could have gone to better use. Like, are we being wasteful? Is this going to cause plastic prices to rise? Because if they start charging for sporks at Taco Bell we’re gonna have a problem. And I’m not talking about regular Taco Bell problems like shitting your pants either.

People Are So Clever: A LEGO Swiss Army Knife Model

lego-swiss-army-knife.jpg

This is the LEGO Swiss Army Knife built by LEGO CUUSO user Robiwan. That’s a pretty clever design. Still, you should never, under any circumstances, bring a plastic knife to a ninja sword fight. I know you might fancy yourself some kind of MacGyver that doesn’t need anything but a Swiss Army knife to defeat a group of ninjas, but you’re wrong. You’re gonna get both your arms cut off. Then wake up and be thankful it was just a dream. Then wake up from that dream in the hospital with no arms.

Thanks to bryce, who got mega bummed after losing the toothpick and tweezers from his Swiss Army knife.
