YES: Ceiling Fan Modded Into Helicopter Ceiling Fan

This is the ceiling fan modded into a much sweeter HELICOPTER ceiling fan by Redditor ScumbagJanitorGuy for his son. It just goes to show, you can’t always judge a book by their username. Scumbag later plans on painting the ceiling to look like the sky. Awesome! The only thing that could make this cooler if it was in my room instead of his son’s, plus I had a race car bed.
Thanks to grego, who informed me the ceiling fan in his bedroom wobbles so bad he’s afraid it’s going to fall on him in his sleep. Oh man, I used to have one like that.![]()

Fort Atlantic releases new album on modded NES cartridge, no chiptunes in sight
It’s getting tough for bands to out retro each other these days (what with even cassettes making something of a comeback), but Birmingham, Alabama’s own Fort Atlantic has managed to come up with something that’s likely to break through the nostalgia-filled haze. While you’ll soon be able to buy the band’s self-titled debut album in all the usual formats, you can now pre-order a limited edition version that ships a week before the proper release date and comes in the form of an NES cartridge modded to hold a USB drive ($ 25 and apparently limited to just 50). That includes the full album in both lossless and MP3 formats, along with an added EP, videos and other bonuses. Unlike past NES album releases, though, there’s no chiptunes to be found here — you can listen to one song from the album courtesy of the Paste Magazine link below, and see frontman Jon Black explain the cartridge decision in the video after the break.

Now You’re Soldering Solo Style!: Vintage Han Solo Blaster Toy Modded Into Soldering Iron

There comes a time in every young man’s life when he receives his first soldering iron. To me, that day feels like it was just yesterday. “That was yesterday — you f***ing stole it out of my toolbox.” Haha — finders keepers!
About 1983, when I was fifteen, I dropped my dad’s red Bakelite soldering gun and broke the casing. Of course he was upset, so I did my best to “fix it.” So I took my original Star Wars Han Solo pistol and gutted it to hold the soldering gun components. I even ran the lightbulb up into the scope on top. The button on the handle worked well for the trigger switch. Ten years later, when the old house was sold, the gun wound up in my belongings. To this day, when an underpowered iron just won’t do, I pull out the “Han Solderer” and get the job done. Half of me likes the mod, the other half is ill over the fact that I gutted my vintage Star Wars toy. What’s done is done.
Sure you gutted your vintage Star Wars toy, but you made it even better. Just like I did with this gutted deer carcass. See? Before it was just a deer. But now — now it’s a gutted deer carcass sleeping bag. Tauntaun tie-in? I think so!

Fukushima plant operator uses modded robot vacuum to suck up radioactive dirt (video)

A few months ago, back when Japan was freshly reeling from that devastating earthquake and tsunami, it became obvious that robots could help survey radiation levels in Fukushima, even if they were powerless to lower them. Now, Tokyo Power Electric Co., the company that operates the damaged nuclear plant, is experimenting with an ad hoc system designed to clean at least some of the radioactive dirt from the reactors. What you see in that clip below is an industrial-grade vacuum cleaner attached to a Warrior, the most heavy-duty of iRobot’s mobile bots. The idea is that workers can control the system from a safe distance, and let the robot handle the dirty work of removing toxic sand and debris. Head past the break to see it in action, combing the floor of the (eerily) empty plant.

Thermaltake Level 10 GT modded to the high heavens, shows off spacious interior (hands-on)

We’ll readily admit that Thermaltake’s Level 10 GT case isn’t for everyone. Its exeskeleton-emulating protrusions don’t exactly blend in well with living room decors, and the company seems to like it that way. Computex 2011 has been the victim host to a whole bevy of customized Level 10 GTs, which exhibit a love for all colors in the rainbow and a fascination with the humble LED light. Underneath the aesthetic excesses, however, you’ll find a practical and very roomy case that’ll happily serve as the fashion-challenged home to your next super rig. 200mm fans spin almost inaudibly, individual hard drive enclosures make hot-swapping storage a doddle, and as you’ll see in the gallery below, all the mods feature retractable headphone hangers. What will they think of next?

Modded Game Gear becomes portable home for N64 (video)

It may or may not actually be the most compact Nintendo 64 we’ve ever seen, but even if it’s holding down the second spot, you can’t knock the ingenuity here. Crafted by one Evil Nod, the self-proclaimed N Gear 64 is little more than an N64 console tucked, shoved and crammed inside a Sega Game Gear enclosure. Best of all, the modder somehow stuffed an N64 controller in there too, yet still left all of the original markings for nostalgia’s sake. Head on past the jump for a video of it in action, or tap that source link to learn more about the build process. Riveting stuff, we tell ya.
[Thanks, Alon]

GP2X gaming handheld modded with D-pad, PSP batteries (video)

These days, it’s the Pandora making waves in the world of handheld emulation, but GamePark’s GP2X could arguably be credited with starting the whole phenomenon. John Grayson recently decided that the original simply wasn’t keeping up with the times, however, and decided to swap out a joystick for a more traditional D-pad. Moreover, he yanked those weak AA batteries and shoehorned a pair of PSP Li-ion cells in there instead, boosting his SNES play time to just over four hours on a full charge. Thankfully for you, neither tweak seems all that difficult to implement, and the sub-10 minute clip waiting after the break does a rather outstanding job of giving you the play-by-play. So yeah, scram!
