Harvard lets human minds control rats, private rodent armies remain distant (video)

Harvard links human and rat minds, Pied Piper no longer required

Sure, we’ve seen rats control other rats, however that will not offer us a legion of mind-controlled animals to release upon an innocent public, will it? Harvard Medical School might unknowingly assist with addressing our (rather misguided) quandary, as it just try out a system that lets a human mind trigger actions in a rat’s motor cortex. The test had sensor-equipped people see a display that flashed in sync with their EEG brain patterns for aesthetic stimulation; as quickly their attention moved to managing the rat, they triggered an ultrasonic rhythm that twitched the rodent’s tail. There’s a couple of troubles with the execution past the obvious lack of autonomy for the poor target animal, though. The rat’s anaesthetized state likely influenced the outcomes, and the system isn’t currently sophisticated adequate to map certain ideas to matching activities. The Harvard team is working to improve the modern technology, nonetheless, and there may be a day when we can satisfy our megalomania … or a minimum of, put the Pied Piper on notice.

Sea lion blows scientists’ minds by head-bobbing to the Backstreet Boys

Screen_shot_2013-04-02_at_9

Researchers at the College of California in Santa Cruz have successfully trained a sea lion to bob its head in time to music, in a research that could change our understanding of how rhythm is acquired. Formerly, state the group in the Journal of Comparative Psychology, it was thought that just animals capable of singing mimicry– such as cockatoos and budgerigars– could possibly be taught rhythm.

Nevertheless, a sea lion called Ronan has actually had the ability to execute to the group’s three requirements: “a behavioral feedback that does not recreate the stimulation; performance transfer to an array of novel tempos; and entrainment to complicated, musical stimuli.” As soon as Ronan had got the hang of things, she was able to training new tunes at different speeds with convenience, as …

BionicOpter dragonfly drone flutters about, blows minds

Festo isn’t really rather the household name that Boston Dynamics is. (And, truly, we’re not completely sure Big Pet dog is a routine subject of discussion at supper tables yet.) But, it definitely deserves just as much attention for the work they’re finishing with robotics. After crafting an equipment in 2012 that soared around like a herring gull, now the company has actually developed BionicOpter. The 17.3-inch long dragonfly drone can flutter with the air in any direction, and even hover, just like its biological motivation. Its 4 carbon fiber and foil wings beat up to 20 times per-second, propelling it through the air as if it were swimming as opposed to flying. Actually piloting the robo-bug is accomplished through a smartphone app, however an on-board ARM-based microcontroller makes little modifications to ensure security during air travel. There are a couple of essential pieces of details we don’t have just yet. For one, it’s unclear how long the two-cell lithium ion battery will last, and rates or availability are missing from the sales brochure (at the source link). Possibilities are however, you’ll never have the ability to offer one any way. The good news is you can a minimum of see this marvel of engineering in action after the break.

Pioneer shows off 2013 headunit line, rocks our minds with bass video

Pioneer launched a stack of new sets this year for CES as well as an iPhone 5 connectivity solution for those left hanging since upgrading to Apple’s latest phone. We’ve seen the headunit specs so we thought we’d give you a pic tour of the newest devices as well as a short clip of us sitting in the custom Lexus CT 200h playing with its ridiculous system. The centerpiece of the system is the AVH-X8500BHS receiver (above) and a custom Steampunk-inspired sub enclosure loaded with six PRS D800 amps. End result? hair-moving, skin-creeping bass and volume. We’re digging seeing all the AppRadio expansion to Pioneers’s line and can only hope we see prices drop — and even become pack-ins — for the now rather expensive connectivity cables.

Great Minds Think Alike (Mine? Mine Barely Works At All): Stephen Hawking Joins Anti-Robot Apocalypse Group

antirobot-stephen-hawking.jpg

Hooray, a new recruit!

Remember when Cambridge University announced they were opening The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, a think-tank designed to help prevent, among other things, a future robotic apocalypse? Well famed brainiac Stephen Hawking has just joined the force, and promises to destroy robots WITH HIS MIND ALONE. Although I bet he could take one in a staring contest too. MAYBE finish one off with his electric chair if it was already injured. “Did I get one?!” No Stephen, that was my foot.

Thanks to RonLTD, who agrees think tanks are cool and all, but what we really need are some TANK tanks.

Google adds medication to the Knowledge Graph, might save our health through search

It’s no secret that numerous of us depend on Google searches for medical advice, much to the chagrin of physicians who need to contend with regular bad attempts at self-diagnosis. Google could not have a treatment for hypochondriacs, however it can stop all of us from taking dangers at the pharmacy: it’s including medicine to the Expertise Graph. Search for medicine and the side results panel will bring up data from the Division of Veterans Affairs, the FDA and the National Library of Medication. Apart from a really top-level recap of a medication’s function, the Expertise Graph will reveal alternative names, related drugs and (most importantly) dangers. The search firm is fast to caution that it’s not giving us a license to recommend our very own treatment– we’ll want to speak to someone who swore the Hippocratic Oath, if there’s more than a headache. The depth of Google’s brand-new search tool can still do even more to assuage concerned clients than a pill container label.

Virgin Media activates more tube WiFi hotspots, minds the gaps in its coverage

Virgin Media switches WiFi on in

Virgin Media has flicked the switch and coated Kings Cross and Warren Street tube stations in gloriously free WiFi. The pair will be joined tomorrow by Oxford Circus and Green Park, while Victoria and Euston will do the same on the 9th. In order to use the service which is free during the Olympics, users need to hop onto the network and register their email address. Once the summer is over, Virgin Media customers will get preferential treatment on the network, with everyone else buying pay-as-you-go minutes so they can tweet about how long we’re stuck at Edgware Road… again.
