Mercedes-Benz plan will put QR codes on cars to speed up rescues
We joke that most people don’t like QR codes, but those codes link to a lot of information through one snapshot — and Mercedes-Benz may just use that efficiency to save lives. The automaker is putting the symbols on vehicles so that emergency crews just need a phone camera scan for easy access to rescue sheets, which are schematics that show where to cut into a wrecked car when recovering trapped passengers. With such immediate knowledge, rescuers don’t have to wait for a model confirmation or else risk cutting wires and fuel lines. While we’ll initially see the QR codes only in Mercedes-Benz cars made this year and beyond (placed inside the fuel door and on the opposite side B-pillar), the company isn’t being selfish: it’s refusing to patent its method in the hope that every vehicle manufacturer will quickly embrace the technology.

Production-ready Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive supercar unveiled
We’re pretty sure we’ve suffered some amount of vision loss from staring at the ridiculously bright paint scheme on Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell over the past few years. MB has rolled it out at virtually every auto show it can and we’ve always topped for a gander, but now we finally have the full production version — and it’s in a slightly more tame but visually perhaps even more stunning color, a sort of chrome blue that even in the flesh looks CG rendered. It’s the SLS AMG Electric Drive, it’s launching next June and we have the full details after the break.

Visualized: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell bares all
Mercedes’ electric AMG SLS E-Cell is the teutonic powerhouse’s futuristic new gull-wing coupe. An electric motor stationed upon each wheel helps it develop 525 horsepower and go from 0-60 in four seconds (three tenths of a second slower than promised). Now its whipped that neon yellow body from the chassis to take us all on a tour of what lies beneath. Batteries from SK Innovations will gain charge from a similar energy recovery system to the KERS we see in F1 cars, all mounted upon a lightweight carbon fibre structure. If you’re interested in taking the full tour, check out the gallery of pictures we’ve got for you below.

I Can Still See It — I Can Still See It!: Mercedes-Benz Makes ‘Invisible’ Van To Advertise New Fuel Cell Cars

Mercedes Benz decked out one of their minivans with an LED screen on one side and a camera on the other that can stream it’s feed to the screen to make the vehicle look invisible. It was done to advertise the company’s new F-CELL hydrogen fuel cells, which generate zero emissions and make the vehicles they run — wait for it — INVISIBLE to the environment. Unless you hit a deer. If you hit a deer you f*** up an entire ecosystem.

Mercedes-Benz gesture control concept is DICEy
Ze Germans seem to be obsessed with Minority Report-style interior controls, and Mercedes-Benz has taken it to the next level with a full-scale interior with nary a button or switch to be found.
Mercedes’ Dynamic & Intuitive Control Experience (DICE) utilizes a series of proximity sensors to detect arm and hand movements, which control everything from music, navigation and social functionality to a heads-up display that comprises the entire windshield.
You can get a feel for the system in action in the video after the break, but as you’ll see, it’s very beta, mistaking hand movements for selections and generally being a pain to use – let alone control while you’re driving a car. Thankfully, Mercedes has plenty of time to work out the kinks as it won’t be coming to production for at least a couple decades.

Mercedes-Benz debuts tablet-packing A-Class concept

As fond as we are of the A-Class, it’s never been the best looking Benz in the bunch, but with the introduction of the new A-Class concept, it looks like that could soon change. One of the car’s designers describes it variously as sexy, expressive, and beautifully formed, and while we wouldn’t go quite that far, we have to say it’s not too shabby. The car sports some interesting looking LED headlights and an inverted mesh grill on the outside, and on the inside it’s packing a rather futuristic display, complete with a dash-mounted tablet and what looks to be an iPhone protruding from the center console. Now, there’s no guarantee that this thing will get the E-Cell treatment, or that all the bells and whistles will make it to production, but for now, it’s shaping up to be a rather stylish upgrade. Mercedes-Benz BIOME concept car grows in a nursery, on sale now in Zion

Okay, so there’s no actual way to phone up Sad Keanu Reeves and confirm that the Mercedes-Benz BIOME is indeed on sale in the “real world,” but it should be. Revealed in The Matrix’s own LA Auto Show, this here vehicle has a theoretical weight of just 875.5 pounds, but it’s likely far too wide to cruise on this planet’s existing roadway system. The vehicle was imagined by designers from the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad, California, and it’s said to be “fully integrated into the ecosystem, from the moment of its creation right through to the end of its service life.” How so? It’s grown “in a completely organic environment from seeds sown in a nursery,” and just being totally frank here, we’ve no idea what that means. But hey, if M-B can figure out how to grow cars in Morpheus’ backyard, who are we to question the reality of it?
