This is a video of how to set ice on fire by adding ice cubes to a layer of calcium carbide. Except the ice isn’t really burning — it’s just providing the water fuel that calcium carbide needs to produce acetylene gas, which will burn like a lit fart.

Calcium carbide consists of two carbon atoms stuck onto a calcium atom. Add that to liquid water (H2O) and the carbon atoms will grab hold of the two hydrogen atoms and produce C2H2, or acetylene gas. This is the gas that’s the fuel in many a welding torch. When you toss in the match the gas will fire up.

As long as there’s still calcium carbide and water reacting, flammable acetylene gas will be produced and your fire will stay burning. Man, this is gonna make a great centerpiece at my holiday party. Speaking of — why haven’t you RSVP’d yet? “I never got an invite.” *smiling slyly* No? “I wouldn’t have come anyways though.” *sad face*

Browser game Highgrounds has numerous of the functions that make collectible card games like Magic the Gathering so addictive– the only thing it’s missing out on is the cards. The game drives you into a series of struggles with the goal of ruining your challenger’s city. To do this you’ll take turns putting units either in front of or behind your city. And depending where they’re put, they’ll behave in a different way, doing everything from attacking and defending to generating resources needed for buying added devices. Each round you’ll have a brand-new group of units to pick from– kind of like a random shuffle of cards– and this procedure continues until one city is ruined.

It’s been virtually a year to the day because we reviewed Nokia’s very first Windows Phone and now we’re looking at its second-generation flagship, the Lumia 920. Since the Lumia 800, Nokia’s taken a fairly huge duty in improving Windows Phone’s standing in a packed (but rewarding) smartphone battlefield. While it could be sharing the limelight with the new HTC 8X, this slab of hewn polycarbonate has won lots of admirers. No doubt, a large piece of those would-be phone customers are, for much better and even worse, lusting after the phone’s PureView imaging tech– and after our early tests, it looks like it might be just as excellent as the lossless optical zoom seen on the PureView 808.

The Lumia 920 prevailed over Nokia’s discussion at Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 press event a couple of months ago, with the smaller Lumia 820 hardly getting a look-in. It’s got a “better-than-HD” 1,280 x 768, 4.5-inch high-contrast IPS show, built-in contactless charging, solid construct quality and more of Nokia’s special software additions. This time, a minimum of on hardware requirements, the business intends to place its flagship on equal footing with the likes of the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5. Can Nokia’s biggest and (essentially) brightest mobile phone maintain its location at top of the Windows Phone pile? Exactly how does that camera fare with lengthy use? And will the Lumia 920 offer enough to pull you far from Android or iOS for your next phone?
