NVIDIA demos Grid streaming on OUYA, proves little boxes play big games

NVIDIA champions GRID as a perfect fit for cloud gaming platforms, but we haven’t had much chance to see a good use case in action. The company was more than happy to oblige at E3, however, by streaming games from GRID to an OUYA system. As Android Central caught on video, the tiny console is well-suited to the job: its Tegra 3 and gamepad can comfortably handle remote delivery of an intensive game like Borderlands 2, at least in the controlled world of a trade show. While OUYA doesn’t have much (official) access to NVIDIA’s GRID at present, the booth demo was a possible vision of the future. It certainly gave OUYA an escape from its hassles on the street.

This is a video from Smarter Every Day showing how you can get leafcutter ants to carry little signs for you by peeing on them. The urine, which contains salt, make the little bits of paper desirable for the ants to drag back to their colony and use to grow their fungal food. It reminded me of how you can get my roommate to drink urine by mixing it into the orange juice container.

video-game-little-golden-books-1.jpg

Remember Little Golden Books? Those things were awesome and the perfect length for an afternoon potty sesh. Now? Now I sit there in pain for like an hour asking myself why the hell I eat the things I do. Animator Joebot has created a small series of video games (Bioshock, Portal and Skyrim) imagined as Little Golden Books. I’m especially fond of the Bioshock one, but I’m especially fond of Bioshock in general. If Rapture really existed, I would live there, and I would be its king. Just me and Sander Cohen taking boner plasmids and making art all day.

Intel NUC review: a little desktop PC that holds big promise

Intel NUC review a little desktop PC that holds big promise

The name says everything. Late last year, Intel gently introduced the Following Device of Computing (NUC): a miniature, barebones desktop PC that stands for a modern take on the conventional beige box. The NUC sits a mere 2 inches tall and comes situateded within a 4-inch square body. It also retails for just timid of $ 300. Do not let its diminutive size or price fool you, however. The Core i3 system is quick, steady and more than efficient in dealing with day-to-day computing tasks. Yes, it’s a hell of a departure from the loud monstrosities we starved after simply a few years back. And it’s a great deal quieter, too.

Before you get too thrilled, though, let’s temper that enthusiasm simply a bit. Just like any bare-bones kit, you’ll require to install your own memory, storage space, cordless networking components and running system. In shorts, unless you want to obtain your hands a bit dirty, the NUC isn’t really for you. Then there’s the question of its price, which becomes a lot less tempting once you consider the shopping list of required components. So, is the NUC deserving of its “Following Device of Computing” title? Let’s explore this question together.

Meet The Entirely E-Ink 3G Smartphone That Could Cost As Little As A Dumbphone

fndroid02

It takes a lot to stand out at a trade convention the size of Mobile Globe Congress. However right here ’ s one device that caught my eye today: an e-ink smartphone. Unlike Yota Phone, the Russian start-up that ’ s using e-ink as a second display to augment the back of a powerful high end smartphone in a bid to stand apart in the uber crowded Android space, this prototype gadget has simply the one screen. A solitary e-ink screen on the front of the device — so it ’ s a true e-ink phone.

It ’ s additionally a true smartphone. There were 2 prototypes on program at Eink‘ s stand, both with a 1GHz chip inside and one (the white one) with a 3G chip in it. The other had Edge connectivity. The phones run Android however, as you ’ d expect, the OS has been streamlined with a customized UI that strips back the functionality to focus on the applications that make good sense for a completely e-ink smartphone — such as a reader app, a dialer and e-mail. The UI additionally consists of a web browser because certain sorts of websites can be seen on an e-ink screen. It won ’ t support video of course but text-based websites can still be read.

The black prototype gadget (visualized below) also includes a backlight for reviewing in the dark. Both screens are capacitive, however as you ’ d expect with e-ink the refresh rate can be a little slow-moving. Ghosting on the screen from previous renders can be eliminated by shaking the device. The modern technology can support both portraiture and landscape positioning so the e-ink smartphone could possibly be switched on its side to change the positioning to more of an e-reader sized width. Both devices felt exceptionally light-weight.

Why do you want an only e-ink phone? Rate for one thing. Battery life for an additional. Not to discuss exposure in bright sunlight. Put all those elements together and this can be the best gadget for some arising markets where electricity is at a premium. The prototypes are proof of concept at this point but Giovanni Mancini, director of item management for E-ink — the business which makes the screen — stated the Chinese OEM which has made the prototypes, Fndroid, is speaking to telcos and might introduce a device this year. So the amount of would this e-ink smartphone expense? Mancini stated the device maker

would set the rate however in his view it would be comparable with a function phone price. A huge style of this year ’ s MWC has been smaller sized mobile players — from open source OSes like Firefox that are looking for to drive openness and accessibility and drive down the expense of gadgets, to mobile veterans like Nokia focusing afresh on building smarter attribute phones to target cost-conscious users in emerging markets. So it ’ s interesting to see business toying with the concept of a totally e-ink smartphone to cut gadget expenses while preserving essential smartphone features such as access to the internet and e-mail.
