Replica of ‘Dead Space’ Plasma Cutter wreaks havoc with laser beams

Laser aficionado Patrick Priebe has created a scarily realistic working replica of the Plasma Cutter featured in the game Dead Space. According to Gizmag, Priebe spent about 200 hours building the weapon, which shoots a total of five laser beams — three green lasers for aiming, and two blue, 1,500 milliwatt beams for burning. As demonstrated in the video below, the weapon can shift between horizontal and vertical orientations, and even ejects energy packs after every round. It doesn’t seem capable of inflicting too much damage, though it can certainly slice through wood or plastic.
Priebe hasn’t released any instructions on how to build your own Plasma Cutter, but he is accepting orders through his website.

Eyes-on with Cornell University’s laser tag dunebots (video)

Cornell University may be the host of the Cornell Cup competition, but that doesn’t mean it can’t bring its own robots to join in on the fun. This year, students brought along a few bots, dubbed dunebots, outfitted with all-terrain wheels and equipped with laser tag turrets. The rugged rig features a pair of cameras, a dustproof and water resistant chassis, air intakes capped with filters, and other custom components for suspension and steering. Not only does the team plan on releasing code and documentation for the project, but the hardware was designed with modularity in mind, so others can build their own modified versions.
Taking the robot into battle requires two pilots armed with Xbox 360 controllers: one directing where it travels, and another aiming the turret and firing. Driving the buggy over the web is also possible, though it takes a few seconds for it to react. The group also baked in voice controls, to boot. If you’re not watching the car duke it out in person, you can even tune in over the web and watch a live video stream from one of its onboard cams. Its top speeds haven’t been firmly nailed down, but the team says the bot was running at approximately 35 percent of its full potential, since it was deemed too fast for conference attendees. This is a video from laser lover (and possible balloon hater) Scott Stevenson popping 100 balloon with a powerful burning purple laser. You may remember the previous video from Scott where he did the same trick except the laser was green and the balloons were red. That made for some slow popping. But this one? This one goes QUICK. Seriously, you blink and you might miss it. If you close your eyes? If you close your eyes you might start daydreaming about a passionate kiss with a lover. That’s what I did. Then when I opened my eyes everybody in the coffee shop was staring at me and you know what I told them? I was just kissing all of your moms right then.

Caltech self-healing chips can recover from laser blasts, save power while healthy

While many scientists have heard the call for self-healing electronics, their previous projects have usually had just a limited capacity to come back from the brink. Caltech has developed an integrated circuit that could take much more of a bruising. Its prototype power amplifier chip has a dedicated circuit and sensors that can change actuators in microseconds if there’s damage, re-optimizing the connections on the spot. And the chip can take a lot of that damage — 76 examples in a penny-sized cluster endured multiple laser strikes in tests (like the one above) while still ticking. The self-healing even helps while everything is in tip-top shape, as it can cut power use by watching for the usual hiccups in load and voltage. So long as Caltech can develop the technology beyond its currently expected niches of communication and imaging, many of our computing devices could eventually take a few bumps and scrapes on the inside, not just their rugged exteriors.

LG Cinema Beam short-throw laser projector and 100-inch screen released in Korea

Among LG’s more unusual product intros at CES 2013 was its “HECTO” laser projector, which– when incorporated with its accompanying 100-inch screen– can tossing a 1080p image from just 22-inches away. While we ‘d heard it’s pertaining to the US in March, the projector is out in Korea today branded Cinema Beam TELEVISION, available for those ready to drop 9 million won ($ 8,322) on the package. It has a claimed 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and can accept video through WiDi or Miracast for wireless streaming from a COMPUTER or mobile gadget, while LG additionally says its laser light source is eco-friendly thanks to a mercury cost-free design and additional long lifetime. The price is stated to be around $ 10K when it ships below, apparently the company feels its unique abilities make it a perfect suitable for industrial setups like sports bars, or simply high-end house movie theater customers that worth its little footprint.

Nokia’s ‘Laser’ passes FCC checks, a Lumia 920 variant for Verizon

We’re just days away from Nokia’s Mobile World Congress event and we’re starting to see the first signs of new Lumias. Earlier today Lumia 720 and 520 images leaked, but now a new device has passed through FCC checks. Named as the RM-860, we understand this is Nokia’s Laser device for Verizon. The FCC lists LTE bands 4 and 13, inline with the required support for Verizon.
The team over at AdDuplex, who provide ads for Windows Phone apps, revealed to The Verge today that it has spotted instances of the RM-860 being tested on Verizon through its logs recently.
