Canon 5D Mark III now captures 24 fps RAW video thanks to Magic Lantern firmware add-on

It’s no secret that Canon’s 5D Mark III is the go-to DSLR for videographers the world over, but things are about to become a whole lot more interesting. The people behind Magic Lantern have successfully coaxed the 5D Mark III into shooting 24 fps RAW video at resolutions up to 1,920 x 820 pixels using 1000x speed cards. If you’re not familiar with Magic Lantern, it’s an open source firmware add-on that brings additional functionality to Canon EOS cameras. The ability to capture RAW video at 24 fps improves dynamic range and resolution — it also provides extra flexibility during post-production. According to the team at Magic Lantern, more work is required before the feature is ready to be deployed. Developers begin bringing ‘Magic Lantern’ firmware to Canon 5D Mark III

The developers of Canon hacked firmware “Magic Lantern” have begun porting the custom software to the 5D Mark III. Earlier today, Alex Dumitrache of the “Magic Lantern firmware development” group posted the image above of the 5D Mark III displaying a rudimentary “Hello, World!” string. This might seem insignificant, but it indicates that Canon hasn’t taken drastic measures to prevent the firmware from being modified. The Magic Lantern Team has brought the custom firmware to the 5D Mark II, the T2i, and many other models.
The firmware is targeted at film makers, unlocking a variety of options and settings that Canon holds back right out of the box, like adjustable audio levels instead of an automatic gain control. However, photographers…

Yahoo Movies just released the first theatrical trailer for Green Lantern, the next big-budget super-hero movie that’s based on a DC Comic. The movie is scheduled to hit the US on June 17 (and its trailer looks pretty cool).
Official Synopsis:
In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.
Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. Joby tempts the argonauts with Switchback headlamp / lantern

Call us crazy, but we’re guessing that the Joby you knew last year will look nothing like the Joby that we see this time next year. Once famous for crafting flexible tripods for simple point and shoot cameras, the outfit has branched out quite significantly since. Case in point: the Switchback. Joby’s still relying on its flexible mount expertise by including a tripod with this here lighting instrument, but it’s the device itself that steals the show. The water resistant Switchback is a two-piece product; there’s a headlamp that can be worn around your dome, and it can be shoved into a lantern container for those sit-around-the-campfire moments. The light itself has a central white beam with two power levels, and it’s surrounded by a foursome of Cree LEDs that shine blue or red (and can be toggled with a button press). Joby throws a pair of AA batteries in for good measure, and in our testing, we found it sufficient enough for backyard gatherings and the like. The lantern apparatus has a clip on the bottom in order to affix the aforesaid tripod, but in practice we found it fairly simple to tip over when not wrapped around a tree limb. At any rate, it’s on sale today for $ 59.95 for those looking to hit the forests in the near future.
