Lynx Laboratories prepping Kickstarter for all-in-one Kinect-like camera system
Texas-based start-up Lynx Laboratories has been aggravating its creation, a 3D camera system for the better part of a month now. Now it’s lastly prepping to make a severe stab at a market that’s still quite in its infancy. The device itself is essentially a big display (14-inch to be specific) with a Kinect mounted on top. The cameras could be utilized to catch 3D designs of environments such as rooms, but likewise individuals or individual things. Those productions can be manipulated virtually or even printed out on a 3D printer, in case you choose a more tactile communication. The giant shooter slab is even capable of capturing motion then turning it into an animation that could be utilized with a 3D design. So if you’ve ever before wanted to animate a military of your clones doing the Thriller dancing, now is your opportunity. We have actually embedded a couple of teaser clips after the break, however there must be plenty more specific coming on January 15th, which is when the business states it will introduce its Kickstarter page.

Intel funnels $40 million into global network of research laboratories

Like any tech company worth its weight in silicon, Intel puts plenty of cash into research, often partnering with outside labs and schools that are less concerned with turning every project into a multi-billion dollar product. After throwing $ 30 million at Carnegie Mellon last year to open two new labs, Chipzilla is investing $ 40 million more in a global network of university research centers. Over the next five years that money will be rolled out to what the company is calling, Intel Collaborative Research Institutes (ICRI). The ICRI are based on the same premise as Intel’s Science and Technology Centers, like those opened at Mellon, except with a global reach. Two existing labs, the Intel Visual Computing Institute at Saarland University and the Intel-NTU Connected Context Computing Center at National Taiwan University are being rolled into the program. In addition, three new centers are being opened up, including ICRIs for Sustainable Connected Cities in the United Kingdom, Secure Computing at the Technische Universität Darmstadt and Computational Intelligence at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. For more info on what sort or work they’ll be doing at the various labs check out the PR after the break.

Sandia National Laboratories generates neutrons in a radical way
The Responsive Neutron Generator Product Deployment Center (say that quickly five times) at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque, NM has discovered a way to take the conventional cylindrical tubes out of the equation and introduce a more computer-chip like, mass-produced neutron source on an astonishingly smaller scale. For those seeking lay terms, we’re hearing that possible practical applications include implantation close to tumors in cancer patients to minimize time in the hospital for treatment, and sensors for contraband. Sandia Labs’ technical staff has created what it calls a “neutristor,” which produces one neutron per transistor, a concept that was directly inspired by the two transistors per bit on microchips. The team is currently seeking funding to ensure future viability, and well, to pay for stuff. Check out the video after the break, as well as further information at the source.

Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories’ builds a 555 chip you can rest your feet on

A 555 timer chip may be pretty versatile as far as integrated circuits go, but when it comes to helping you take a load off, well, it’s a little… small. The opposite is true of this version built by the folks at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories, however, which makes up for what it lacks in transistors and silicon with some first class foot-resting abilities. Best of all, the lab has provided a complete guide for building your own — that includes the use of a CNC machine and laser etching, although it could also be built the old fashioned way pretty easily (or scaled up to coffee table size, for that matter) if you’re so inclined. Hit the source link below for all the details.
