X-ray telescope produces gorgeous photos of Kepler supernova’s remains

Over 400 hundred years ago, famed astronomer Johannes Kepler witnessed a bright new star light up the sky which, unbeknownst to him, was actually the remnants of a star that had exploded tens of thousands of years prior. But the supernova’s remains are still active to this day, and scientists have been able to use a specially designed X-ray telescope at the Chandra observatory to monitor its activity. After more than 200 hours of observation in 2006, a composite image of Kepler’s lingering form has been created, showing the varying energy levels of its X-ray emissions. If you’re concerned about the effects that Kepler’s stellar explosion may have on our planet, worry not — the remnants are estimated to be at least 16,000 light years…

Eurocom Monster 11.6-inch notebook: Ivy Bridge, Kepler, 16 GB RAM, multiple personalities
Mobile gamers and server pros aren’t exactly cut from the same cloth, but Eurocom is targeting them both with its Clevo rebadged, 11.6-inch, sub-four-pound Monster notebook. That idea is crazy enough to work, since a fully spec’d model will have an Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7-3920XM processor, 16GB of DDR3-1600 of RAM, a 240GB SSD or 1GB Hybrid drive, and on-board NVIDIA GT 650M graphics running at 850MHz. The 1366 x 768 screen might be a touch undersized for gamers, but they could let that slide since the processor can be safely overclocked up to a decent 3.8GHz. As for business pros, the company claims the Monster could be used as a portable server, run multiple VMs of Windows and Linux, or high-end engineering apps like MatLab. As usual with Eurocom, you can configure the system in dozens of ways, including matte or glossy screen, Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge processors and multiple RAM or disk setups. Pricing and delivery dates weren’t given, but if it’s up your alley, check the PR and your wallet — or hit up Ned in accounting.

MacBook Pro blurrycam pics hint at Kepler GPU
Blurrycam photos purporting to be of the 15-inch MacBook Pro’s logic board, suggest that the refreshed laptops will carry NVIDIA’s GeForce 650M Kepler GPU. Given that we’re barely hours from an Apple keynote and being deluged with all sorts of weird and wonderful rumors, we’re filing this under “could be plausible.” That said, it’s a surprise given the company’s high-profile switch to AMD’s graphics last year, but Cupertino has never been a company for sentimentality. We’ll find out the truth later today, so stay tuned.

NVIDIA outs budget GeForce GT 610, GT 620 and GT 630, no Kepler in any of ‘em
Look out, savvy graphics card buyer: just because it’s labelled ‘GeForce’ and starts with a ’6′ doesn’t necessarily mean it benefits from NVIDIA’s premium 28nm Kepler architecture. We’ve already seen rebadged mobile chips with last-gen 40nm silicon, and now entry-level desktop cards are arriving on shelves that will stretch Fermi’s expiry date even further. There are no price tags as yet, but according to AnandTech the ‘new’ GeForce GT 610 is a repackaged GT 520 with 48 CUDA cores and an ever-so-polite 29-watt power draw. The GT 620 is a GT 530 with a 49-watt TDP and twice as many CUDA cores as the 610 — although a meager 64-bit memory bus will put a cap on any performance gains. Finally, the GT 630 is a 65-watt GT 440 in all but name, with a 128-bit memory bus width allowing its 96 CUDA cores to be fully exploited. This latter card shouldn’t be confused with the OEM version of the GT 630, which does actually pack Kepler. Bewildering, right? We’ve quizzed NVIDIA over its strange rebadging tradition and were told that the company simply numbers its products according to raw performance, rather than freshness or chip type — which sort of makes sense so long as you don’t dwell on it.

Kepler in the clouds: Nvidia’s 2012 GPU Technology Conference

Nvidia’ 2012 GPU Technology Conference (GTC) conference brought the usual array of graphics processors, but the company is trying its hand at something new: putting the power of those processors in the cloud. Nvidia’s Kepler-based VGX and GeForce Grid distribute graphics processing. Nvidia wasn’t the only company showing off wares at the event, but we’ve got their news and everybody else’s all right here.

Sony VAIO S upgraded with Intel’s Ivy Bridge CPUs and Nvidia’s Kepler GPUs

Sony has announced a refresh of its VAIO S Series laptops, along with a pair of new E Series models. The S Series will come with a choice of 13.3- and 15.5-inch displays; the 15.5-inch model has a 1080p IPS screen, while the 13.3-incher doesn’t have its resolution specified — we’re going to go ahead and assume that, like the previous generation S Series, it’ll max out at 1600 x 900. The larger model will feature a 22nm Ivy Bridge Core i7-3612QM 2.1GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GT 640M LE discrete GPU, alongside Intel’s HD Graphics 4000 integrated chip. There’s a generous 1TB of storage on board, along with Bluetooth 4.0, two USB 3.0 ports, a single USB 2.0 port, and a 1.31-megapixel webcam. Both models will…

Acer ships Aspire M5 Ultrabook to UK in June, Ivy Bridge and Kepler chips in tow
Acer made something of a splash when it trotted out its Timeline Ultra series of Ultrabooks at CES; those waves are just now hitting the shore with a full-on release in the UK under a tweaked Aspire M5 name. Both the 14- and 15-inch models are now known to be packing Intel’s Ivy Bridge-era third-generation Core processors, and the “dedicated” video we heard about in January is NVIDIA’s Kepler-based GeForce GT 640M, which we saw in the Timeline Ultra M3. Either new PC is still under 20mm (0.8 inches) thick with the option of an SSD, like the M3, but slapping the M5 badge on top means a much narrower display bezel, a backlit keyboard and other more upscale touches that show where your money’s going. Picking the 15-inch model adds an optical drive along with a keypad for number-crunching. Mum’s the word on exact specs and that all-important pricing, but those questions will be answered by the time the M5 hits British shops in mid-June. Now all that’s left is to know when the new Aspire reaches the other side of the Atlantic.

NVIDIA unleashes GeForce GTX 690 graphics card, loads it with dual Kepler GPUs, charges $1k
Would you look at that? NVIDIA hinted it would be coming today, and it looks like the tease is living up to the hype. The company stormed into the weekend at its Shanghai Game Festival by unleashing its latest offering, the GeForce GTX 690 — and oh yeah, it’s packing two 28nm Kepler GPUs! Trumping the recently released GTX 680 as the “worlds fastest graphics card,” it’s loaded with a whopping 3,072 Cuda cores. The outer frame is made from trivalent chromium-plated aluminum, while you’ll find thixomolded magnesium alloy around the fan for vibration reduction and added cooling. Aiding in cooling even further, the unit also sports a dual vapor chamber and center-mounted fan. It’ll cost you a spendy $ 1,000 to pick up one these puppies come May 3rd, and you’ll likely be tempted to double up — two can run together in SLI as an effective quad-core card. With that said, NVIDIA claims that a single 690 runs 4dB quieter and handles about twice the framerate as a duo of GTX 680s in SLI — impressive, but we’ll reserve judgement until we see it for ourselves. check out the press release after the break if you’d like more information in the meantime (…and yes, it runs Crysis — 2 Ultra to be exact — at 57.8fps, according to NVIDIA).

Nvidia GeForce GTX 690 announced for May 3rd: two Kepler GPUs for $999

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang just introduced the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 in a keynote over in Shanghai, China. Designed “from the ground up to deliver the highest performance in history,” this card is built in a pretty wild fashion: it’s constructed using plated aluminum on the outside, with polycarbonate windows embedded in the front. It has a 10-phase power supply, integrated SLI technology connecting two GTX 680 GPUs onboard, and dual water-vapor champers sitting directly on top of them.
Jen-Hsun gave away the very first GTX 690 that came off the production lines to the most enthusiastic fan in the crowd. That got him a predictably enormous cheer.
In total, the GTX 690 has 3,072 CUDA cores, running at a 915MHz base clock and 1,019MHz…
