Sony RX100 sequel leaks in Japanese manual images, adds tilting screen, hot shoe and WiFi

Sony RX100R leaks in Japanese manual images, adds tilting screen, hot shoe and WiFi

We were more than a little smitten with Sony’s original RX100, a high-end Cybershot point-and-shoot housing a notable 1-inch 20.2-megapxiel CMOS sensor alongside a f/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens. It looks like there were enough customers that thought the same, because SonyAlphaRumors has gleaned several images from the manual for a sequel device. The site has more to share, but it’s checking its translations first. In the meantime, these initial images already point to some notable hardware additions. Alongside a screen that can tilt up and down (plus a light sensor to adjust brightness automatically), the mark two RX100 will apparently catch up with Sony’s NEX series, adding built-in WiFi too. There’s also the addition of a hot shoe for mics and other peripherals, but fear not: there’s still the built-in flash to the left of it. Naming, pricing and availability are still unknowns, but according to the site’s mole, the camera will get formally announced later this month on June 27.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro Gets A 256GB Storage Option When It Hits The Japanese Market In June

surfaceproright

Microsoft’s Surface Pro, the tablet/laptop amalgam device designed to perfectly showcase Windows 8, is getting a 256 SSD internal storage option, the biggest yet for the device. Previously, Microsoft has shipped the Surface Pro with either a 64GB or 128GB internal drive, but when it arrives in Japan June 7, it’ll come in 128GB and for the first time, 256GB flavors (via Engadget).

The 128GB model will retail for just about $ 1,175 U.S. in Japan, or just under $ 200 more than the 128GB version’s current retail price. The beefier version should help address some of the criticism levied at the Surface Pro for actually reserving a big chunk of on-board storage for OS components, which was particularly harmful in the 64GB capacity.

A 256GB option not only makes the Surface Pro more generally useful, it also gives Microsoft another way to compete with devices that consumers might look to instead, like the iPad, which introduced a high-capacity 128GB version shortly after the Surface Pro’s launch, and the MacBook Air, which offers up to 512GB of storage through customization options.

The Surface Pro spec bump will likely make its way to the U.S. and other markets eventually, as it seems like something that Microsoft could use to boost interest in its Windows 8 flagship slate. But there are also rumors of an entirely new Surface to ship in June, with a possible introduction at Build. I’d say it’s more likely we’ll see this spec bump touted at that conference, as the first-gen Surface is barely out of the oven as it is.

The Surface Pro reportedly hasn’t been selling at that well, with figures from March showing it hadn’t even broken 500,000 devices shipped at that point, based on sources close to Microsoft’s supply chain. That’s obviously not good by really any relative measure, so it wasn’t entirely clear that Microsoft would do much with the line in the future. This new storage option is proof that for now at least, Microsoft is still investing resources in the Surface Pro, even if it isn’t on the verge of releasing all-new hardware under the brand.

Insane Japanese Dance Dance Revolution Player

japanese-ddr-kid-wheeeeeeee.jpg

This is a video of some guy in Japan made of nothing but Redbull and uncut cocaine playing Dance Dance Revolution, or the Japanese equivalent of Dance Dance Revolution. He’s quick. If I was ever challenged to a duel I would pay this guy to take my place and kill my enemy. And, if I couldn’t come up with all the money he wanted for the job, I’d have to go with plan B: flee the country, move to South America, grow a beard, and only respond to ‘Mr. Monchichi, banana magnate’.

Japanese mobile boss claims he’s already patented the tech inside Google Glass

CEOh no he didn't! Japanese mobile boss claims he's already patented the tech inside Google Glass

Patent filings, we don’t take so seriously. One of Japan’s richest men, with the potential to call on an army of lawyers to defend what he claims is his invention, we probably ought to. Masayoshi Son, the billionaire (and philanthropic) CEO of SoftBank, has given a two-hour speech to his shareholders about his technological predictions for the next 30 years, and about halfway through he describes a familiar idea: augmented reality glasses that can understand what a person is saying and provide subtitles as a visual overlay. At one point, he specifically mentions protecting the concept:

“By the way, we’ve already taken out a patent on this — translation glasses with captions.” (1:22:49 in the video at the source link.)

We think we may have found the patent application in question, submitted in 2010 by SoftBank Mobile Corp. It does show a translation function similar — but not totally identical — to what’s been shown off in a recent Project Glass promo video, in which a guy translated his own words using Google’s specs. In any case, the whole patent system is so esoteric that it’s impossible to predict what ideas will clash and what won’t, but it’s worth bearing in mind how Masayoshi Son first became rich: he sold a translation device patent to Sharp for $ 1 million. What are the odds on that?

Japanese Teens Playing Quidditch In Real Life Pictures

quidditch-irl-1.jpg

I spy a hoverboard.

First Dragon Ball relocates in reality, then Vader force-choking, and now some Quidditch in reality photos (although some just appear like witches). It’s strange how the net works, isn’t really it? It’s like, cyclical. Just one big turd-recycling collection of tubes. Think of it as a lazy river– no issue the number of times you explore, you always end up back at the exact same area. Anyone desire to guess exactly what next week’s photo meme will be? Due to the fact that I’m wishing for huge boobs with ‘I HEART GW’ composed on them. Now that would be brand-new and amazing.

Hit the jump for a couple more.
