On The Verge, Episode 009: Microsoft’s Andy Wilson and a trip to Industrial Light & Magic

OTV Show Thumbs

From prose to prototype, this week’s episode of On The Verge kept to a (fairly loose) theme about science fiction. First Josh, Nilay, and Paul took a look at one possible dystopic future as predicted by both Apple Store lines and iOS 6 Maps (it’s all in good fun, we promise). HTC also graciously let the trio play around with a quartet of its new Windows Phone 8X flagship devices. Next up, Bryan Bishop took a trip out to legendary special effects house Industrial Light & Magic to learn, among other things, how The Hulk came to life on screen for The Avengers.

Then science fiction became science fact when Microsoft principal researcher Andy Wilson joined Josh on stage to show off some of the crazy projects he’s been working on in the lab,…

Olympus creates world’s thinnest industrial videoscope, packs HDR (video)

Filed Under Cameras Olympus creates world's thinnest industrial videoscope, packs HDR (video)

Though its medical brethren are considerably slimmer, at 2.4mm in diameter, Olympus says its iPLEX TX is the most slender industrial videoscope on our big blue marble. Rather than using traditional fiber optics to capture footage reminiscent of comic book print, the iPLEX TX houses a miniature CMOS atop one end of the scope and an HDR image processing technology called WiDER to preserve detail and brighten images. The eagle-eyed scope is also 200 times more resistant to frictional wear than fiberscopes and has over double the slip strength. If you’re itching to poke inside impossibly cramped and complex pieces of machinery, jump past the break to catch a glimpse of the video-enabled snake in action from DigInfo.tv.

Automation engineers are a dime a dozen. If you want to be useful, combine your automation with some other field of study so that you can really be in demand. I finished a mech eng degree, and then took some biochemistry. It is paying dividends for me now!

Microsoft’s stagnating industrial mobile market

via dl.dropbox.com

While Microsoft pushes its Windows Phone platform to try and regain ground in the consumer market, a New York Times article points out an area where Windows Mobile is losing ground: ruggedized industrial units. Used throughout the retail sector, by couriers, in healthcare, and a variety of other places, rugged handsets are relied upon, and historically these have run the old-style Windows Mobile — up to version 6.5. The NYT suggests that, with Microsoft largely ignoring the enterprise sector in its mobile push, developers could well turn to rival operating systems such as Android to keep up with the modern features that end-users are coming to expect.
