Aakash 2 Android tablet materializes, costs around $21 for Indian students

Aakash 2 Android tablet materializes, costs around $ 35 for Indian students

It’s a couple of months late, but at least it’s striking the roads for a few less dollars than expected. The Datawind-built Aakash 2 is finally a truth, launching in India on the country’s National Education and learning Day. It’s the second iteration of just what amounts to a barebones, affordable Android slate, packing a 7-inch touch panel, 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of Flash storage space, Android 4.0.3, built-in WiFi and a front-facing VGA camera. Apparently, this one’s going to be delivered to Indian students for Rs 1,130 (around $ 21), while outsiders will certainly have the ability to snag one for closer to $ 80. Of course, the difference now is that these kinds of projects aren’t fairly as tale. Undoubtedly, Chinese megashops are hawking low-rate Android tablets immediately for around the exact same quantity, setting a brand-new (reasonable) bar when it pertains to pricing on ho hum slates. Still, we’re all for getting modern technology into the hands of students, and you can learn a little bit more about just what those extremely students can easily anticipate from VentureBeat‘s hands-on simply below.

Indian Railways launches RailRadar, lets you track trains via Google Maps

Indian Trains has simply made it a little easier for rail tourists with a new internet application called RailRadar, which uses Google Maps to track trains on a real-time basis. This is definitely appreciated on one of the largest rail networks on the planet– it functions even more than 10,000 trains everyday– though the service is only offered on 6,500 trains for now. To discover where your train is, simply search for its name or phone number and RailRadar will certainly spot it for you. You can additionally locate trains by entering the name of the station. Blue highlights show trains that are on time while red means it’s behind schedule. If you click a train, it’ll show its entire course from start to finish. The logical next step would be for this to be on smartphones like just how it is in Japan, though we’re unsure if that’s in the cards just yet.

[Thanks dil for the suggestion!]

RIM announces ‘budget’ BlackBerry 9220 for Indian socialites

RIM announces 'budget' BlackBerry 9220 for Indian socialites

There are a lot of Indian hands out there, hands in which there could also be a BlackBerry smartphone. A fact not lost on RIM it would appear, as it’s set to released its “most affordable” Curve — the 9220 — over there. Naturally, the ubiquitous BBM service takes center stage, even having its own dedicated button. The new handset also comes fully laden with all the usual social networking goodies, and for the launch RIM’s kindly throwing in a selection of apps from BlackBerry World worth 2500 rupees (about $ 50) if you get on board before June 30th. You might want to find a WiFi hotspot to download them though, as there’s no 3G, but you can tune into Radio Mumbai via the FM receiver to take your mind off that omission. Camera-wise it’s a fairly humble 2-megapixel affair, which combined with the memory card slot, should allow a stack of photos for sharing. Wondering exactly how affordable it is? Lay down 10,990 rupees (about $ 210,) and it’s yours — as of tomorrow that is.

Microsoft dropped from Indian censorship trial

An Indian court has terminated proceedings against Microsoft in a case involving complaints that Internet companies are not taking responsibility for user-posted content. The case centers around regulations put into effect in 2011 that make web hosts responsible for the content uploaded by their users, with journalist Vinay Rai complaining that Microsoft, Facebook, Google, and nine other services wilfully host material that “seeks to create enmity, hatred and communal violence.”

The web firms argue that India’s own Information Technology Act should protect them from liability where user-posted material is involved, but both Facebook and Google have previously removed content that has been flagged. Rai claims the companies involved have…

RIM builds BlackBerry server center in Mumbai, right where Indian government wants it

RIM puts BlackBerry servers in MumbaiThis is the epilogue to a story that started as far back as 2008, when the Indian government first demanded access to encrypted BBM traffic. In 2010, RIM made “certain proposals” that satisfied politicos and averted a ban, and now it’s gone one step further — placing 5,000 BES Enterprise servers directly beneath officials’ noses in Mumbai. It’s not yet clear if messages will be subject to any more scrutiny than they were before, but N4BB reports that a “team of officers” has already inspected the installation and that “permission for direct monitoring” is “expected to be issued.” Looks like those snoops will soon be working double shifts.

Indian $ 70 solar slate joins XO-3 and Sakshat in vaporware race

Another day, another phantom budget tablet: today’s unnamed low-cost model is manufactured by Bharat Electronics, out of India. The Bharat slate runs Android 2.2, sports solar charging for back-up power, and sings for only 3000 Rupees, or just shy of $ 70. No word on processor speed, RAM, or storage, but Hindu Business Line states that the Froyo pads will “allow data to be stored and uploaded in real time to a central server,” suggesting a cloud-based storage system. Availability? None for now, this slate is being sold exclusively to India’s Ministry of Rural Development for use in a poverty survey. Bharat’s Chairman and Managing Director, Ashwani Datt, stated they would have to configure a new version of the slate if they were to offer it to students or consumers. We’ll let you know what we think just as soon as we get our hands on the XO-3 and that other tablet from India. You know, for vaporous comparison.
