Facebook reveals government data request numbers, is first to include national security stats

Facebook lawyer Ted Ullyot revealed in a post tonight precisely how many user-data requests it receives from government entities, and that it’s negotiated the ability to include national security-related (FISA and National Security Letters) inquiries in the report. Until now, the companies that receive such requests, whether through the recently uncovered PRISM program or not, have not been able to say anything about them, or report how many there are. Still, the stats it’s able to release aren’t specific, and include all requests from the last six months in a range, said to be between 9,000 and 10,000, covering between 18,000 and 19,000 accounts. We still have no official reports on what those inquiries cover, how wide reaching a single one can be or what information has been passed along. Facebook however, is quick to point out that these cover “only a tiny fraction of one percent” of its 1.1 billion active user accounts.
Along with Microsoft and Google, Facebook has publicly petitioned the government to let it be more transparent about the size and scope of the requests it receives, and Reuters reports tonight that “several” internet companies have struck an agreement to do so.
For the six months ending December 31, 2012, the total number of user-data requests Facebook received from any and all government entities in the U.S. (including local, state, and federal, and including criminal and national security-related requests) – was between 9,000 and 10,000. These requests run the gamut – from things like a local sheriff trying to find a missing child, to a federal marshal tracking a fugitive, to a police department investigating an assault, to a national security official investigating a terrorist threat. The total number of Facebook user accounts for which data was requested pursuant to the entirety of those 9-10 thousand requests was between 18,000 and 19,000 accounts.

iOS 7 to include standardized game controller support

For the first time since Apple opened the App Store in 2008, it’s explicitly opening up iOS to hardware game controllers, enabling console-like gaming experiences powered by its mobile devices. The implications are big: game developers will be able to target all controllers that conform to Apple’s standard, removing a lot of the friction that has so far stopped add-on hardware controllers from gaining popularity.

Acer upgrades its PCs with Haswell, new models include the Aspire V7 Ultrabook

This is hardly the biggest Acer news of the week (that would be this, this and this), but it’s worth a PSA nonetheless. Now that Intel’s formally unveiled Haswell, Acer announced it’ll be refreshing much of its PC lineup with those fourth-generation chips — 23 notebooks and six desktops, to be exact. Obviously, that includes too many models and configurations for us to discuss today, but Acer did say the updates will span the S7, M, V3, V5, V7 and E Series laptop lines, with prices ranging from $ 600 to $ 1,600. On the desktop side, the changes are limited to AT3-605 series and the Predator AG3-605 series, with prices running the gamut from $ 700 to $ 1,500.
If there’s one model that caught our eye, though, it would be an Ultrabook from Acer’s recently announced Aspire V7 series. The V7-482PG-9884-U (how’s that for a name?) has 14-inch IPS display, a Core i7-4500U processor, a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GPU, 12GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD. That’ll be available this month for $ 1,300, putting it squarely at the high end of what Acer has to offer.

Microsoft revealed a number of new features for its upcoming Windows 8.1 update last week, but at Tech-Ed today the company is focusing on business-related changes. Windows 8.1 will include native support for the wireless Miracast format, allowing users to mirror their screens to compatible devices. Miracast is designed as an open alternative to Apple’s own AirPlay mirroring, and makes use of Wi-Fi direct connections to stream content from a PC, smartphone, or other source to TVs.

Yahoo rumors ahead of Monday’s event include $1.1 billion Tumblr buy, Flickr updates

Earlier today, Yahoo sent press invites to a “product-related” event in New York City Monday afternoon and there are already two separate rumors about the company’s plans. The first, from Bloomberg, concerns the event specifically and cites a “person familiar with the matter” reporting we’ll hear about new updates for Yahoo’s once-mighty Flickr photo service. The second is from AllThingsD, which has upgraded rumors of a Tumblr purchase from possible to possibly imminent, saying the company’s board will meet to decide whether it will make a $ 1.1 billion all-cash offer for the site. That announcement is also penciled in for the 20th, but whatever actually goes down you can be sure we’ll have the details as they’re unveiled at 4:30PM ET.

ISPs in the United States are simply getting around to enforcing a “six strikes” policy against unlawful P2P sharing, however France is now considering a suppression on the streaming and direct downloads of pirated content.
