Huawei Ascend Mate review: a supersized phone with supreme battery life
When Huawei revealed the Ascend Mate at CES this year, it felt like smartphones had reached an end point — they surely couldn’t get any larger. We’ve since been proven wrong by Samsung’s Galaxy Mega 6.3, but the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate has gone on sale first, and it’s every bit as intimidating as it was in January. The question is whether or not Huawei has more than just size on its side. Is this nearly tablet-sized device worth putting in our pockets, and can it fend off the suddenly tiny-looking Galaxy Note II and Optimus G Pro? Read on past the break, and you’ll find out.

Huawei brings W1 Windows Phone 8 handset to US, lands Walmart as retail partner

Huawei is launching another phone in the United States, and it’s managed to recruit a powerful ally to share it with consumers: Walmart. On the same day that founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei pushed back against US national security allegations involving his company, Huawei has announced that its W1 Windows Phone 8 handset will be available this month from America’s largest retailer. The W1 isn’t exactly a new addition to the Windows Phone portfolio, but this marks the first time US buyers will be able to secure the device. As a refresher, the hardware contains a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 4-inch Gorilla Glass IPS display. You’ll find just 1.7GB of storage available out of the box, but thankfully that can be…

Huawei backs out of US network equipment market, citing unfavorable ‘geopolitical reasons’

Following last October’s Congressional report stating that Huawei’s networking equipment poses a national security risk, the business group in charge is announcing plans to back out of the US market, reports IDG. On Tuesday, carrier business group CTO Li Sanqi announced that “apparently, due to whatever the geopolitical reasons, we are not focusing on the US market.” Huawei’s critics in government and elsewhere have voiced concerns that the equipment could enable some in its home country of China to listen in on network traffic, although a probe into the issue ordered by the White House didn’t turn up any evidence of spying.

Huawei, LG pitch tents in growing Firefox OS camp
While we doubt Huawei or LG were singing “I’m late, I’m late for a very important date…” at MWC this year, in hindsight they likely would have enjoyed sharing what arguably became the biggest deal of this show. Unfortunately the two handsets we caught up with at Telefonica’s booth were behind glass and no amount of reason was going to see them sprung. Obviously the Huawei offering isn’t close to ready as it is running on an Android set, though, the LG while powered off certainly looked like a complete housing featuring the requisite home button. So it would seem Firefox OS has become a waiting game as we sit and tally what other manufacturers feel it’s safe to jump on board. Short gallery of the two devices under glass are just below.

Nokia To Go Downmarket At MWC To Much better Compete With Huawei And ZTE, Report States
Windows Phone 8 is Nokia ’ s big play for the future, however as an outcome of concentrating on those gadgets and their higher-end target market, the company is giving up ground to companies like Huawei and ZTE with lesser end devices. But the Finnish company may be wanting to get its affordable groove back with the introduction of new, fundamental smartphones not based upon Microsoft ’ s mobile OS, to be revealed at MWC next week according to Reuters.
The tails of brand-new designs originate from “ company sources, ” according to Reuters, and recommend Nokia will introduce “ cut-price ” hardware in multiple smartphones, in addition to a single brand-new Lumia gadget on Windows Phone 8, but one designed with affordability in mind. Nokia already provides the spending plan Lumia 620, a $ 249 smartphone with Microsoft ’ s latest OS onboard, but that ’ s still over $ 200, whereas the ordinary selling price of Nokia mobile phones in general was EUR 31 in 2012, Reuters notes, with net sales of smart phones considering EUR 9.44 billion in sales in 2012 for the business.
Nokia has actually had tremendous success with its Series 40 line of devices, as Natasha noted in a post late last year, but even that market where it has typically been sturdy is under attack from rival makers. Nokia is failing to attract audiences in its traditionally strong markets with even low-cost Lumia mobiles. And it ’ s losing share fast to Huawei and ZTE, which are quickly charging up the ranks of international mobile manufacturers thanks to an emphatic focus on lesser end devices.
Nokia ’ s candle is burning at both ends, with the business dealing with dangers in both smartphones and with low-end devices. The business said to “ anticipate a great deal of things ” in 2013 based on the Series 40 platform at the end of 2012, and it looks most likely we ’ ll see a few of those things unveiled at MWC. A spruced up Series 4 line could definitely help bolster its shrinking share of the under $ 100 market, and if a new Lumia could break the $ 200 obstacle, we might see Nokia recover some valuable smartphone share as well.

Huawei Ascend P2 flaunts svelte profile in more leaked shots

As MWC draws near, it’s not surprising to see an increase in leaks, and today we bring you a few more pictures of Huawei’s Ascend P2, which recently made a cameo in some unofficial product shots. The 4.7-inch full HD handset is expected to feature Android 4.1.2, a quad-core 1.8 GHz processor (developed in house), 2GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage (plus microSD), a 13MP shooter and a 2200mAh battery. Slotting below the 5-inch Ascend D2 and 6.1-inch Ascend Mate we saw at CES, the Ascend P2 is rumored to be less than 6.45mm thick with Nexus 4-like on-screen buttons. Of course, since the FCC is unlikely to certify such a svelte device, it’s likely we’ll see a tweaked version of this phone if it ever makes it to the US — then again, it looks thicker to us in the pictures. Pricing is supposedly targeting the 3,000 Yuan mark ($ 480), unsubsidized. Guess we’ll find out more in Barcelona, right? Hit the break for a couple more images.

Huawei MediaPad 10 Link hits the FCC looking worse for wear
Huawei’s MediaPad 10 Link plainly didn’t know exactly what it was getting itself into when it traveled to the FCC. The Android tablet, which made a quick look at CES a few weeks back, took several hits to its 10.1-inch show, now that Wolverine is evidently handling electronic devices for the commission. According to notes from CES, the tablet’s running Ice Cream Sandwich on a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. No word yet on how soon the newest member of the MediaPad family will be riding FCC approval onto our coasts– or if the name indicates some brand-new Hyrulian tie-in for the company.
