White House’s top cybersecurity chief retires

With the US government’s mounting concern over cybersecurity issues, White House cybersecurity coordinator Howard Schmidt’s retirement from his position comes at an inconvenient time. Schmidt worked two and a half years in this position and was previously an adviser for President George W. Bush on cyber issues. During this time, the government has made investments in assets designed to protect us from cyber threats both large and small.
Schmidt’s replacement is Michael Daniel, chief of the White House Budget Office’s intelligence branch. Daniel was instrumental in reforming intelligence budgets after the 2001 terrorist attacks, and has worked for 17 years at the Office of Management and Budget, according to The Washington Post, while…

Game Of Thrones Houses As Existing Beer Brand Labels

This is a series of beer labels (links to shop where you can buy shirts/stickers) in the style of currently existing brews (this is Stella Artois here) modified with some of the house/character names from Game of Thrones. I don’t know about you, but I’d drink them all. As a matter of fact I’d drink TWO of each just to make sure the taste was consistent. Plus I’d be willing to drink them the way they did back in the olden days — WARM. Or, if it was winter, ICE COLD. The point is temperature means nothing to me. There was a time in my life when I used to microwave beer just because people didn’t believe I’d still drink it. I won a lot of money making bets that way. Just kidding, I did it for free but in hindsight I should’ve made them bet.

Shanghai Science and Technology Commission proposes 100 ‘innovation houses’ for DIYers

Here we call them hackerspaces and generally they’re sustained through the contributions of paying members. The Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality has decided to go with the more esoteric “innovation house” and is expecting support from the government, but the concept is the same — a pubic place where those with an idea can go and make it a reality. The commission is proposing building 100 such studios equipped with wood and metal lathes, drills, saws and milling machines. Shanghai may be a sprawling city of over 23 million (the largest in the world), but if even just half of those hackerspaces are eventually constructed it would have one studio for every 460,000 citizens and become one of the most DIY-friendly metropolises in the world. By comparison, New York City’s roughly 8 million residents share just eight.

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.
This week Inhabitat showcased several hot new eco vehicles including the world’s fastest plug-in hybrid and an insane screwdriver-powered tricycle that sends you flying through the streets headfirst. The field of alternative fuels also advanced by leaps and bounds as the U.S. Department of Energy announced a new breed of cost-effective biofuel and a team of researchers discovered a way to efficiently produce hydrogen from urine.
From flying houses held up by balloons to skyscrapers that harvest energy from bolts of lightning, this week we also showcased some of the world’s most incredible buildings. We were wowed by the futuristic finalists of the eVolo skyscraper competition, which included underwater spires made from plastic debris and massive megaprojects that contain entire cities.
This week we also spotted several exciting new examples of green consumer tech – from a clever brain-shaped CFL bulb to ASUS’ new line of cardboard computers to a wearable mix tape you can pin on your sleeve. We also celebrated the launch of Apple’s latest tablet by rounding up 14 of the best eco-friendly iPad cases, sleeves and bags. Finally, we kicked off a contest where you can win a beautiful recycled leather iPad case from Dewdrop Designs, and we shared 11 chic travel essentials for jet-setters on the go.

Truth be told, it’s been awhile since we’ve seen a gadget-laced jacket that really caught our eye. There’s the occasional winter coat with a built-in iPod slot, and there’s a few unaffordable threads that don’t much matter to the vast majority of you, but it’s difficult to think of a single overcoat that’s as connected as this. Teased by Scottevest, the forthcoming Carry-On-Jacket is as functional as it is delightful, with an internal pocket made specifically for touchscreen devices so you’ll never even have to reach inside to skip tracks. There’s also an internal Personal Area Network (PAN), a dedicated BlackBerry (or any smartphone, really) holder, passport pouch, a digital camera compartment, iPad pocket (er, “PadPocket”) and a separate area made specifically for those zip-locked liquids that you’ll need easy access to at the TSA screening zone. Needless to say, the avid traveler with a pinch of geek lust should be grinning from ear-to-ear just gazing at this masterpiece, and honestly, we could see this converting even the hardest of hardcore Rollaboard warriors. Now all we need is a price and release date, STAT.

This week Inhabitat showcased some of the world’s most stunning sun-powered homes as the European Solar Decathlon kicked off Friday in Madrid, Spain. We can’t wait to see the winner of this year’s competition, which challenged 17 teams from around the world to build the most efficient solar-powered house. Will it be the University of Nottingham’s hyper-efficient H.O.U.S.E, Florida’s Re:Focus prefab, or one of the other amazing contenders?
Speaking of solar power, the field of clean tech had a hot week as Sony unveiled the world’s most efficient solar module. We also saw solar power energize Africa’s largest slum as a photovoltaic television set allowed residents of Kibera, Nairobe to watch the World Cup. Several massive new geothermal projects rounded out our renewable energy news this week as the US Department of Energy unveiled plans to make Nevada the “Saudi Arabia of Geothermal Energy”.
In other news, two-wheeled transportation took the world by storm as Italy unveiled its first electric motorcycle and Switzerland showcased its Zerotracer Superbike, which is set to circle the globe in 80 days using only renewable energy. And if a peddle-powered ride is more your pace, then you won’t want to miss the world’s slowest Porsche.
If all that exciting transportation news has you overheating, then relax and cool off — here’s a futuristic refrigerator that keeps things cool with bio gel and an underarm clothing patch that eliminates body odor through nanotechnology.
