Holy Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! Tetris ported to a jack-o’-lantern (video)

DNP Holy Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! Tetris ported to a jacko'lantern video

Exactly what occurs when you gut a pumpkin and change its withins with heat-shrink tubing, solder, 128 LEDs, eight AA batteries, an Arduino board and smart programs? You get exactly what self-proclaimed tinkerer Nathan Pryor calls “Pumpktris.” Over the years we’ve seen the traditional problem game Tetris ported to some amazing things, however a piece of fruit? Just in time for Halloween, this intricate spin on the jack-o’ – lantern includes a fully playable Tetris game controlled from the pumpkin’s joystick stem. Whether you’re a hardcore do-it-yourselfer, or a diehard Tetris fan wishing to top the system’s high score (9,800 points), you could build your personal Pumpktris. Of course, its designer estimates it’ll take around 12 hours or longer to develop the custom LED matrix and joystem and carve up the gourd of your option. If you’re up to the difficulty, you can discover a complete walkthrough of the job at the source link below. Nonetheless, if you ‘d simply like to see this quasi-organic gaming rig in action, check out the groovy video clip after the break.

Holy Shi-Shi: THIS — This Is Why You Wear Suncreen

note-to-self-wear-sunscreen.jpg

Seen here looking suspiciously like Gandalf (cast a healing spell on that shit, bro!), a 69-year old trucker who’s had the left side of his face exposed to the sun for 28 years (from the driver’s side window) shows off the notable difference in skin texture from the right, normally shaded side. That…wow. I would have maybe looked into driving a British truck every-other haul.

His condition is called unilateral dermatoheliosis, from the Greek dermis and helios, skin and sun. It’s also called photoaging, and it results from chronic exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. In his case, it only affected the left side of his face because of his work. As he drove, he received much many hours of sunlight through the left window of his vehicle.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “Big deal — I spend all day indoors staring at a computer or television screen, there’s no way that’s ever gonna happen to me.” And you know what? You’re right. Sad, but right. I dunno, go hit the beach or something, shit! “Sharks.” Right again! Scoot over and make some room for me on the couch.

Thanks to bb, who is beautifully fair-skinned and has to be very careful in the sun. Me? I’m reckless in the sun! *runs across street blindfolded*

Holy Strategic Partnerships, Batman! A Brief History Of Nokia’s Batman Obsession

lead

The Nokia Lumia 900 The Dark Knight Rises Edition handset has made its way on the interwebs recently and it’s nothing short of a beauty, with a black polycarbonate unibody frame and a laser-etched Batman logo across the back. Moreover, the phone — which is usually limited to either a black or white background and a handful of color themes like Nokia blue, teal, lime, mango, and pink — will also come with a black and grey theme.

Of course, plenty of Dark Knight Rises content will come pre-loaded as well, including a game called Claim Gotham City and the Dark Knight Rises app. We had gotten a glimpse of the phone in what appears to be official press shots (or renders) a few days ago, but the first hands-on photos of the phone have surfaced, courtesy of Phonerpt.

Take a look:

Now, the Lumia 900 Batphone is far from the first Batman/Nokia collaboration to date. After a little light research, I’ve learned that there are quite a few Nokia batphones out in the world.

Here’s a brief image-tastic history of Nokia’s obsession with Batman:

Nokia 5800 XpressMedia

In 2008, a now-incredibly famous movie hit the silver screen. You may have heard of it: The Dark Knight. It featured Heath Ledger as the Joker, who tragically died before the movie was ever released. But it also featured another shining star known as the Nokia 5800 XpressMedia. The phone appeared in the trailer for the movie and was then blogged by dozens of tech sites. It was the first touchscreen phone Nokia put on the market, complete with stylus and three home buttons. It was nicknamed the Tube, and ended up in a handful of music videos including Britney Spears’ “Womanizer”, Flo Rida’s “Right Round”, and Cobra Starship’s “Good Girls Go Bad”.

Nokia 6205 Dark Knight Edition

Then, in June of the same year, Nokia realized the potential of putting actual Batman imagery and design language on the phone itself, and came out with the Nokia 6205 Dark Knight edition. It was a basic flip phone, with a flash-enabled camera and tons of pre-loaded Batman content like ringtones and wallpapers. It had a Batman home screen background, along with a Batman icon along the back of the solid black (rather sleek) flip phone. Verizon sold the device, along with a white version for non-Batman fans.

Nokia Batman Concept Style N19

Also in 2008, a Finnish Nokia designer named Heikki Juvonen came up with this concept design, likely piggy backing off of the hype from the 5800′s cameo in The Dark Knight. It’s now known as the Nokia Batman Concept Style N19, and it’s said to have a “futuristically transparent” display. There’s no list price for it, nor is there any spec sheet. Essentially, it’s an awkwardly-designed feature phone inspired almost entirely by Batman, from the wing-esque keypad section to the black and goldish coloring.

Nckla Batman/Spider-Man phone

About a year later, Shenzhen picked up on the trend. So, this isn’t necessarily Nokia’s obsession with Batman, but rather Nckla‘s (think Prado instead of Prada). This phone hit the web in June of 2009, and seemed to be the lovechild of a Spider-Man fan and a Batman fan. It came in both black versions, and white with red and blue trim. Along the back there is a large Batman symbol, which is a part of the loudspeaker, and the small speaker on the front is also emblazoned with a Batman icon. The phone also happens to light up in blue and red.

Nokia Lumia 800 Dark Knight Rises

Fast forward a couple years, and you’ll find the Nokia Lumia 800 Dark Knight Rises smartphone. It’s nearly identical to the 900 Dark Knight Rises, but without the big brother’s LTE connectivity, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, and front-facing camera.

Holy Smokes: Super Impressive Steampunk Portal Gun

steampunk-portal-gun.jpg

DeviantARTist robin-n-raspberries batman-n-bananas went and built this ultra impressive steampunk Portal gun out of found objects (read: junk). It…is better than the steampunk Portal gun I could build out of pieces designed specifically FOR building a steampunk Portal gun. The ingredients:

2 antique clock movements, 1 +1/2 hangers, Metal teapot stand, plastic mechano, plumbing parts, 1 plant pot, 1 hair gel pot + various lids, plastic tub (those ones you get nuts in the the supermarket), plastic tubing, lots and lots of nuts and bolts, miniature storage box (for the battery compartment), pocket laser disc (you can get them on ebay if anyone’s interested), 3 lightbulbs, carboard tube, metal covering from an old hairbrush, AV socket, tons of odds and ends from my parents garage, oh and of course the usuals – milliput, humbrol and warhammer paints, hot melt glue and about 6 gallons of superglue.
…that’s about as much as I can remember… enjoy!

Not gonna lie, I’ve actually put all those things together before and it didn’t look anything like a Portal gun. But you know what it DID look like? A yard sale. I made a nickel!

Holy reverse KIRF Batman! Meizu M9 ROM ported to HTC EVO 4G

Some industrious hackers have created a port of the Meizu M9 ROM for the HTC EVO 4G, bringing a little KIRF flavor to Sprint’s favorite jumbo phone. The port is still in the developmental stages, but most of the M9 functionality appears to already be working, with only the port from GSM to CDMA and tweaks to screen resolution left to do. After a little spit-shine to make sure the build is stable, EVO owners can finally see what the Meizu M9 fuss is all about without having to actually buy one. Of course, why you’d actually want to do this to your perfectly functional Android phone is a question that may never truly find a legitimate answer.

Mary-Jo Foley, Microsoft lover, buys an iPad, blood rains down on the Holy Land

You may or may not have heard of Mary-Jo Foley but she’s covers Microsoft. Like totally covers Microsoft. She’s as much as a Microsoft nerd as we are Apple nerds. That’s how serious she is.

Well, she bought an iPad. I know! WTF!

Anyway, Mary-Jo bought the iPad because she couldn’t find a Windows device that did what the iPad does, mainly exist in a plane that is neither PC nor smartphone yet offer the best of both. She explains it thus:

So why did I succumb to the charms of the iPad? Quite simply, I have not been able to find a PC that offered what an iPad does. Windows laptops are powerful, versatile and relatively inexpensive compared to Apple’s counter-offerings. You can get portable netbooks (with so-so performance), great big-screen gaming rigs and thin-and-light models (like the Asus UL30A that is my current workhorse). But none of these has the amazing battery life, fast on/off, ultra-handy form factor, a made-for-touch interface (rather than touch bolted on to a keyboard/mouse-centric interface) or a built-in app store.

She basically admits that Windows, at least right now, is not a good tablet platform. Putting aside the fact that the industry has been saying that since the first tablets rolled out in 2001, she’s very brave. When I read her headline, I was concerned she’d be trolled mercilessly. Thankfully, the commenters were quite kind. The worst was stuff like this dude, who channels Freedom Fighter Che Guevara:

As a consumption device, it is probably very good. I understand MJ’s rationale and thinking – it makes perfect sense.

However, I will never give Apple any of my $$ given their business philosophy. I therefore think MJ jumped the gun. I will wait for Android/Chrome slates. Judging by the Android phones, they will be more or less on par with the iPad, will be much more open and quickly come down in price.

Anyway, it’s a good read.
