What classes and schedule should I have in high school if I want to get into an ivy league?

Question by Kiwibuzzlebee: What classes and schedule should I have in high school if I want to get into an ivy league?
I am going to start highschool next year and I am interested in becoming valedictorian of my high school. Since I would like to go to an ivy leaugue what classes should I take in high school? If it is possibe, could you give me specific names? For example : algebra 2 / trig

Take the most difficult classes available in every subject and get A’s. Anything labeled honors or advanced placement or international baccalaureate is good. AP and IB classes probably won’t be available until sophomore or junior year, but many high schools offer freshman honors classes. For math, you should go up to Calculus, and farther if you can. That means taking Algebra II and Trig/Precalc first. Also, be sure to take a language all four years. You should take at least one class in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and a foreign language every semester. Many students take more than one class in an area. For example, right now I’m in Honors Chemistry and AP Physics.

The most important thing to be aware of is that for the Ivy League, academics aren’t enough. You need them, of course, but they get thousands more applicants with nearly perfect records than they can admit. Join clubs, start clubs, become the president of clubs. Play a sport or three. Learn an instrument (the Ivy League likes oboe players). Join the debate team, the math competition team, the robot design team. Write for the school newspaper, or write a book. Act in the school play. Volunteer for hundreds of hours. You don’t have to do all of these, but do two or three very well. Then, if you check the right diversity block (racial minority, underrepresented home state) you have a chance.

Getting into an Ivy League college is fantastic, but unfortunately I’m not exaggerating the requirements. Remember that there are hundreds of great colleges that have many of the advantages of an Ivy League school but are easier to get into. If you come anywhere close to the course I laid out, you will have many, many options even without Harvard. America, especially the Northeast, is full of private liberal arts colleges that are the envy of the entire world. It’s good to be ambitious; some people have to get into the Ivy League, after all. But don’t be crushed if you don’t make it, and don’t make yourself miserable all through high school in order to have a chance. The kids who try that often flame out once they get to their dream school, because they burned themselves out and forgot how to enjoy life or learning or have any dreams beyond that acceptance letter. Focus on learning all you can and doing activities you enjoy that help you grow. Then you’ll be well-situated for college and maybe even the Ivy League.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels reach milestone high as global warming worsens

Img8148_jpg_large

Atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the primary gases involved in global warming, reached a new, cautionary milestone yesterday. The oldest continuous CO2 measuring station in the world, an observatory on the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii, reported that levels of the greenhouse gas have reached 400 parts per million (ppm) — an amount not seen in at least three to five million years, by the observatory’s estimate. Levels of CO2 traditionally fluctuated between 200 and 300 ppm between warm periods and ice ages on the earth, but since the industrial revolution, concentrations of the gas have been slowly — and now, rapidly — rising.

When measurements began in Mauna Loa in 1958, CO2 levels were as low as 317 ppm. Though…

Time Lapse Of 16-Bit Metroid Mother Brain Finale Getting An Artist’s High Definition Photoshop Overhaul

Note: Respectable size shot of the end product BELOW.

This is a time-lapse video (after the jump– that’s jut a animated gif above in case you’re someone’s mother reading this) of DeviantARTist Elemental79 (of DOOM screenshot to high res photo popularity) turning a composite 16-bit scene from Super Metroid into a high-res art piece. I, for one, would be honored to hang a print of that in my living room. Specifically over the hole in the wall I made throwing my Playstation controller during a temper outburst. In case you care:.

In order to provide the screenshot a 16×9 aspect proportion this is not a real screenshot from the game, but made up of numerous screenshots and sprite sets. Included in this scene is a metroid, which is not precise to the game, but believable because there wouldn’t be a rational main reason that one could not wander into Mother Brain’s space (And I actually wanted to remake the metroid).

To respond to some concerns I’ve gotten, the image took in between 50 and 60 hours and had well over 500 layers. I didn’t actually take note of either. I likewise didn’t do this in one sitting but over the course of a few weeks.

Fifty to sixty hours– that’s some serious commitment. Perhaps not as committed as I am to the cause of animal rescue, however not everybody can invest their extra time being a hero. You know how many cats I have? Six. “I thought you were going to say more than that.” THOUSAND. Numerous that when I put their food out I can’t inform which method is up.

Struck the jump for the video.

Yes, Facebook Is For Talking To Your High School Friends

Science proves it.

Source: Paul Matthew Photography  /  via: shutterstock.com

Most research about Facebook these days paints a picture of a depressing place where people who don’t really know you make you feel bad about yourself. But a new study confirms that it's actually very useful for its most basic, homespun purpose: helping young people keep in touch with their high school friends.

Researcher Kevin Johnston and his coauthors surveyed 572 college students in South Africa about their Facebook use and their “social capital,” which is defined basically as the benefits they get from relationships with people. The researchers measured the students' social capital by asking questions like how much they felt a part of their college's community and how comfortable they'd be asking a high school acquaintance for a favor.

Heavy Facebook use, they found, was associated with several kinds of social capital, but the most significant correlation was with “maintained” social capital — essentially, the benefits of staying close with your existing friends from home. In addition to being able to ask for favors, students who used Facebook a lot were more likely to say they could find out about job opportunities or events in another town from high school friends or acquaintances.

Thinking of old friends in terms of “capital” may seem a bit cold, but of course these friendships have intrinsic value too. Johnston and his coauthors mention research on “friendsickness,” or “the anguish caused by loss of contact with friends.” Facebook may be able to mitigate this feeling, even when friends are far apart physically.

Previous research has backed up the importance of high school friends on Facebook. Researchers at Michigan State University, for example, found that undergrads thought high school friends made up the main “audience” of their Facebook profiles — 97% said these friends would see their profiles, while only about 15% said strangers would see them.

Of course, the idea that Facebook is useful for keeping up with childhood friends isn't news to anyone who's used to getting status updates from their former lab partner ten times a day. Still, its worthwhile to remember that the network isn't just a place where people make new, “virtual” (often understood as “fake”) friends, but also a place where they keep up with their oldest real-life friends. And that act of keeping up can have both emotional and practical benefits.

Who do you think looks at your Facebook profile?

Who do you think looks at your Facebook profile?

Above are college students' responses to this question. Close to 100% of students said their high school friends saw their profiles, while a much smaller percentage thought strangers would look at it.

Large Hadron Collider goes silent for two years of repairs and retrofits

We’ve long known that the Large Hadron Collider would have to pause, however that does not take the edge off of the moment itself: as of Valentine’s Day, the particle accelerator has conducted its last examination for the next 2 years. The big research ring will undergo sweeping repair works and upgrades that must should give it the superconducting connectors had to hit the originally planned 14TeV of combined crash energy, against the 8TeV it’s been restricted to nearly because the beginning. CERN’s machine probably earned the downtime. After a rough beginning, it went on to produce rafts of crash information and in great condition proof of the evasive Higgs boson. If you’re still down, think about the hiatus as doing us a favor– it postpones any world-ending disasters till around 2015.
