An Ivy Bridge too far? AMD may have finally lost the battle against Intel’s juggernaut

Fast payday loans For Every One

Welcome to Computex 2012, the coming-out party for Intel’s Ivy Bridge CPU refresh and Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. The two halves of an irresistible hardware-software combination that has dominated the PC world for so long that it has its own nickname — Wintel — came together in Taipei this week to once again reaffirm their supremacy. And AMD just stood on the sidelines, watching and scratching its head.

Think about all the marquee devices launched by the likes of Acer and Asus at this show — were any of them AMD-based? The day-zero media blitz from the local Taiwanese vendors and their international competitors was almost exclusively Intel-powered, and where it wasn’t, it was because ARM-based processors were starting…

LAST CHANCE: Watch Venus Transit The Sun Tomorrow Or Have To Wait Another 105 Years (Note: You Will Be Dead)

venus-transits-sun.jpg

Tomorrow afternoon (USA time) Venus will cross transit the sun and be visible from earth for several hours. Just make sure to use the old ‘poke a hole in a piece of cardboard’ trick and watch the shadow on the ground so you don’t go blind. Save that for masturbating.

Because Venus and the earth don’t orbit the sun on the exact same plane–Venus’ orbit is tipped 3.4 degrees relative to ours–most of the time it’s too high or too low…It only lines up in all 3 dimensions and traverses across the sun four times during an unusual 243 year cycle, with the transits coming in pairs separated by alternating periods of 121.5 and 105.5 years.

In the United States, the transit will begin at roughly 6:04 Eastern, 5:04 Central, 4:05 Mountain, and 3:06 Pacific Time. Over the course of several hours, Venus will appear as a small dot moving slowly against backdrop of the sun.

The next few transits will be in December 2117, December 2125, June 2247 and June 2255.

So yeah, if you want to see it get out there tomorrow afternoon, because there’s no way you’re gonna be alive in 105 years. “But what if they cryogenically freeze me and then bring me back to life?” Please, nobody’s gonna pay to have you frozen.

Thanks to bb, who made me promise to catch her a star in a net even though she knows my good star-catching net has a hole in it and I’ll have to sew the legs shut on the boxers I’m wearing and use those. Don’t look at my butt!

Does the Motorola Xoom have Adobe and internet on the go?

Question by : Does the Motorola Xoom have Adobe and internet on the go?
I know there was a beta for it but idk if there is still a beta or if it already has it. Also do you know if it has 3g (internet on the go),.. i already know its 4g upgradable.

Answer by Crim Liar
All the common Adobe web helpers are available for Android 3.x tablets. As for “internet on the go”, yes you can get a version of the Zoom that has 3G built in. I’d visit a bricks and mortar outlet to have a play with the various tablets, the Xoom is nice but there are even nicer tablets!

Corsair Force GT SSDs put through their paces, have graphs to prove it

Corsair Force GT SSDs put through their paces, have graphs to prove it

Instead of singling out one of Corsair’s latest SandForce-equipped SSDs, the folks at StorageReview sussed out performance differences by putting each drive through the wringer. Though read / write specs are relatively uniform across the line, barring some slight dips in speed, they dug up a few juicy morsels of info that could benefit both frugal and performance-minded shoppers. In a read intensive gaming test, the 60GB entry drive performed similarly to the 480GB behemoth. Another notable result was a 60% jump in throughput between the 120GB and 180GB models. Keen on eking out the most performance-bang for your buck? Hop over to the source for the full skinny and a bevy of charts.

Question by : I have a Robotics team kickoff today, so I need some help hyping it up.?
I do the twitter and facebook of the robotics team, so what’s a fun tweet or status to hype it up.

Even a cheer would be fun.

I have this CMU cam2+ robotics project that requires image processing, where do i start from??

Question by Divz: I have this CMU cam2+ robotics project that requires image processing, where do i start from??
I think i am pretty much clear with the idea that the cam actually tracks a ball. I would like to know if there is anyone who has already worked on the same and has experience with the image processing part of the project. For example, what color model is better if the cam is used? After the entire robot is set up how do we actually get the data from the robot?

Answer by Snoopy’s Best Friend
You asked a lot of questions here.

In my experience, the best color to use with the CMU cam (speaking from experience with the original CMU cam) is in the red spectrum — red, light red, orange, etc.

The camera has various modes that you can extract data from it. One mode will tell you how much of a color is visible to it at that point in time. You can also extract where the bulk of each color is in relation to the camera frame. That is how you can tell if something is moving, where a certain color object mass is in relation to the camera frame, etc. The camera sees in two dimensions so it can’t tell you how far away something is, but it can give you x-y coordinates in relation to the frame avaialble to it at that time.

If you go to various robotic sites, there are samples of these programs. I am assuming you have already been to the CMU website as well.

I am not quite clear on what you are asking in your last question.

Good luck.

Think Of The Docks! Could The New iPhone Have A Micro USB Connector?

photo_2

Now look: these are probably fake as all get-out, but bear with me. These handsomely watermarked photos are purported to represent a brand new iPhone design with a sort of two-tone brushed and chromed casing. Whether they are real or not (they’re definitely going to get UBreakIFix plenty of SEO juice), there is still a bit more to this story than just some blurry-cam shots (and these nice shots on 9to5mac). The most important thing to note is the size of the dock connecter. That’s right: it’s a micro USB port (or, less likely, a Thunderbolt port).

Arguably most major manufacturers have settled on micro USB as the standard. This is, in short, one of the best things to happen to the industry in the past decade. That Apple still clings to their jolly 30-pin slot is quite odd, especially considering how much real estate these things take up in the casing. A lot of those pinouts may have seemed like a good idea a few years ago, things like a dedicated S-video connection are probably outmoded these days. Sure they’re great for backwards compatibility, but why not offer a teeny adapter and call it a day?

Whatever happens in the next few weeks before WWDC, rest assured we’ll see plenty more iPhone 5 mockups. The glut of cases we’ve seen in the past hour is pointing to something brewing in Cupertino. Here’s hoping there is a solution for the constellation of iPhone-compatible devices already set up for 30-pin connectivity.

Robo-fish swim into the ocean’s funk, so you don’t have to

Image

Gene Roddenberry would have you believe that space is the final frontier. But really, the deep blue sea is more apt for that distinction. And without mega-rich hobbyists to fund exploratory plunges into those uncharted depths, science has had to seek out an alternative, more cost-effective means. Enter the robotic fish. Measuring five feet in length (1.5 meters), lasting up to eight hours and costing about $ 32,000 (£20,000), these cyborg swimmers are made to boldly go where no man should — that is, into contaminated waters. The project — a joint collaboration between the University of Essex and Strathclyde, the Tyndall National Institute and defense contractor Thales Safare (cue ominous Jaws soundtrack) — aims to cut down on the time it traditionally takes to collect samples and determine corresponding levels of water pollution. The sensor-laden bots apparently swim just like the real thing and, if a recent trial off the coast of Gijon, Spain pans out, could very soon “school” their mass-produced way into other maritime endeavors. No word on whether these automated pesce will be able to detect the piscio in your pool, but there’s always the purple water for that.

And people are saying you can use your old xbox.
Which is true?

no the only difference is that with the old consoles you have to plug kinect into a wall outlet
