Steve Jobs wanted to be Willy Wonka for a day, ship a golden certificate with the millionth iMac

Willy Wonka

MacRumors reports that Steve Jobs wanted to play Willy Wonka for a day, “just as Wonka did in the movie,” according to a new book from ad man Ken Segall. Segall, who worked with Jobs for more than a decade and came up with the “Think Different” campaign, says that “Steve wanted to put a golden certificate representing the millionth iMac inside the box of one iMac.” Whoever opened the lucky box would receive a refund and be flown to Cupertino for a tour of the Apple campus. Steve seemed rather serious about the idea, too, since he apparently “instructed his internal creative group to design a prototype golden certificate.” Segall says Jobs wanted to meet the winner “in full Willy Wonka garb… complete with top hat and tails.”…

Alexandre Herchovitch dresses up HP Pavilion dm1 with golden doilies, higher sticker price

Ask the most fashionable folks you know, looking good isn’t cheap — no surprise then, that playing dress up has put a premium on the HP Pavilion dm1′s price tag. Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchovitch has dolled up the ultraportable laptop with a lacy gold topcoat, applying the signature flair to the machine’s keyboard, palm rest and lid. The cost of style? About $ 1800, according to Notebook Italia, which buys you 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, a 500GB hard drive and 1.65GHz dual-core AMD E-450 brain. A pretty penny, considering the notebook’s Core i3 model can be had for a mere $ 600. Sure, Herchovitch takes the dm1 out of our holiday gift guide’s “on the cheap” section, but where else are you going to get a designer doily kicks?

NRG to bring 200 fast-charging EV stations to the Golden State, pump $100 million into CA infrastructure

Way back before NRG was making electric DeLoreans and building solar power plants, it co-owned a slew of power facilities in California with Dynegy — an energy outfit that got caught up in a long-term litigation over some old energy contracts with the state. Long story short, that legal dispute became NRG’s problem in 2006, after it acquired Dynegy’s majority stake in the partnership — a problem it’s finally resolving by peppering California with 200 fast-charging EV stations. The $ 120 million settlement promises to create jobs, invest in the state’s economy and provide job training for the stations’ maintenance and installation crews.

NRG may be shelling out some serious cash, but the deal is still mutually beneficial — those extra vehicle chargers will be running on its own fee-based eVgo network, after all. Governor Jerry Brown calls the settlement the beginning of a “virtuous circle” that will boost EV sales for the state, which will in turn, provoke investors to expand California’s charging infrastructure, which will, of course, sell more cars. In fact, he’s banking on it, and has signed an executive order setting targets for EV adoption. If all goes as planned, you’ll be looking at a smog free San Francisco skyline by 2050. Won’t that be nice?

The title says it all. I just didn’t want to leave this part blank. Actually, I DID want to leave it blank because that would be a first for me but then I chickened out like a giant sissyboy. I swear, I can’t do anything write. “That’s the wrong right.” SEE? I should probably just take a shower and call it a day.

Hit the jump for the worthwhile remake.

New Zelda And Golden Wiimote To Arrive November 20th

zss

When I first saw The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword at E3 2010, I have to admit I wasn’t impressed. The demo was obviously rushed out, the Wiimote was being unresponsive, and it took him like a dozen slingshot rocks to knock down one spider. But it has definitely shaped up nicely over the last year or so, and was looking better than ever at PAX. Now that the doubters had been satisfied to some extent, it only remained to set a date for availability. And we just got that.

The new game will be hitting the US on November 20th, just in time for the holidays. I get the feeling there will be a lot of Zeldas under trees this year. And what’s more, you’ll be able to buy it bundled with that fabulous golden Wiimote we saw teased at E3 this year for a mere $ 20 extra.

The bundle will sell for $ 70 and the plain version for $ 50. Why would you not get the bundle? Both versions, however, will come with a Zelda 25th Anniversary Concert CD.

If you’re still not sure about it, we’ll have a review of the game up as soon as they start sending those little buggers out.

Golden Gate Bridge plans to collect all tolls electronically by September 2012

San Francisco’s world-famous Golden Gate Bridge looks much like this right now, but come September 2012 the last of those yellow “cash” signs are scheduled to wink out. That’s because the bridge’s board of directors voted 13-2 to approve a $ 2.9 million plan that will replace the bridge’s 30 full-time human tolltakers with a fully electronic system. Don’t say you didn’t see this coming, folks. The existing FasTrak subscription RFID transponder system will continue to work, and there will be a camera-based backup as well — if you pass through the bridge without a FasTrak pass, bridge-mounted cameras will take a picture of your license plate and you’ll get a $ 6 bill in the mail. Planners estimate the move will save about $ 19.2 million by the year 2020 in salaries and benefits that would otherwise go to the friendly meatbags who work there now, and should things stay on track the revamped system should debut in February of next year.
