We’d like to thank the Academy and all the little people who helped along the way — but mostly we’d like to thank you, our viewers, for helping The Engadget Show win not one, but two Webby Awards this year. That’s right, our plucky little show managed to pick up two of the coveted coils, and we’re frankly overjoyed. We’re so pumped, in fact, that we don’t want the winning to end. Linksys, one of the greatest router companies and currently a subsidiary of Cisco, is being bought by one-time competitor Belkin. According to a news release, Belkin and Cisco have accepted a sale of Cisco’s House Networking Company Unit, which includes employees, items, and technology along with the Linksys brand. That brand name isn’t really disappearing, but the sale implies Belkin will tie up a large part of home and small company networking: the company states it will have 30 percent of that market when the sale closes.

Belkin hasn’t disclosed regards to the deal, and future strategies aren’t spelled out in information. In the meantime, people with Linksys products will continue to get support, and Belkin says it desires to help “grow Linksys’ market presence” in …

Google first gave some leading developers the ability to reply to user comments on Google Play last year, but it looks like it’s now letting considerably more devs in on the act. While it’s not yet clear when (or if) all developers will be able to do so, a spokesperson has confirmed to The Next Web that the feature is now “gradually expanding” to additional Android app developers. On its developer site, Google further clarifies that developers will only be able to reply to any comment once, and it outlines a few fairly straightforward posting guidelines — namely, that developers should “make it clear and relevant,” “be nice,” “don’t solicit or promote” and “keep it clean.” Users will also receive an email notifying them of the developer’s reply, and be given the ability to update their original comment and rating (presumably with the goal of avoiding one star reviews for issues beyond their control). Google also adds that the ability to comment is “a privilege, not a right,” and that apps and accounts can be suspended if developers violate the guidelines.

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem Globe, a column dedicated to checking out the society of customer technology.

She looked at me, then at my phone and back at me. She was not happy. Her eyes darted around the restaurant. They surveyed the additional hubbies, guys and fiancés: Were they too neglecting their dates, inspecting sports scores, texting their buddies? Is my spouse a jerk or is this a social pandemic?

“What would take place if your phone didn’t exist and you had to speak with me?”

“But I am speaking to you.”

“No, you’re considering your phone.”

“Right now, I am saying words to you. Exactly how is it that I am not speaking to you at this very second?”

I wasn’t going to win this with semantics. No, I lost the second I chose it was an appropriate time to get my phone. And, to be fair, I was being a jerk. We were at a good dinner and I must be into her, not my e-mail, sports scores or Reddit.

So I put the phone away. I guaranteed to not take it out for the rest of the evening, a guarantee I kept. And we had a charming evening.
