Any.DO gives iOS and Android apps a fresh look, teases ‘new way to manage your day’

After expanding beyond its Android roots last year, Any.DO may have managed to become even more popular thanks to adoption from iOS users. But even with the kind praise from suitors, the handy app isn’t resting on its laurels: earlier today the Android and iOS versions received an update which features a redesigned look and an all-new logo. Despite bringing a novel UI to the table, both Any.DO apps retain a similar focus on simplicity and intuitiveness — in other words, you’ll still be able to manage to-do lists by heavily relying on quick taps and easy gestures. All updates aside, Any.DO appears to be prepping a new product announcement, as its website is now displaying a message that says it’s “about to launch a new way to manage your day.” Any.CAL, anyone? We shall find out soon enough.

Owner gives Palm Pre 2 a steampunk makeover
Most people would buy a Bluetooth controller if they decide to keep an old phone for gaming, but one particular user from Chinese site Zoopda was struck with a better idea. Kissing his plan to buy a Bluetooth add-on goodbye, he instead spent a weekend adding steampunk-inspired accoutrements to his Palm Pre 2. Check out a video of the tricked out phone in action after the break. It’s not in English, but it might give you an idea of what to do with your old handheld devices in case you’re looking for something to go with your goggles and Victorian-era laptop.

Microsoft gives students 3GB additional Skydrive storage for one year
There are plenty of cloud storage options out there which offer some initial amount of free space — including Dropbox (2GB), Google Drive (5GB), Box (5GB) and Microsoft Skydrive (7GB). While these services usually provide additional free storage via referrals and special deals (bundled with device purchases for example), Microsoft is doing something different with Skydrive by gifting students an extra 3GB of free space for one year. If you have a valid .edu email address you can visit the URL below to receive a free storage code. The offer is limited to one per person and the code must be redeemed before December 31st 2013. It’s unclear what happens to your data after the year’s over but it presumably remains available in read-only form. Considering the price of tuition, this deal isn’t quite as juicy as getting 100GB of free space for two years on Google Drive with the purchase of a Chromebook — still it’s a no brainer.

Fujitsu revamps E-series Lifebooks, gives Ivy Bridge one last hurrah
Intel’s Haswell-based processors may be just around the corner, but the suit-and-tie crowd can’t always wait to buy new PCs, can it? Fujitsu has those impatient corporate buyers covered with a refresh to its E-series Lifebooks. The 13.3-inch E733, 14-inch E743 and 15.6-inch E753 all keep on trucking with Ivy Bridge, but come in silver and red designs that are more elegant than what we saw last year. Not that they’re just skin-deep upgrades, mind you. The more common configurations tout more recent 2.6GHz Core i5 processors and 500GB hybrid hard drives, while each system can scale up to 16GB of RAM and a Core i7 for extra-demanding work. When prices start at $ 999, the new Lifebooks may be inexpensive enough to make shoppers feel better about their timing — at least, for a few weeks.

Twitter gives API 1.0 a reprieve, lets it live until June 11th
Those who preferred Twitter’s earlier, more liberal ways have regarded May 7th with a sense of dread, as that’s when API 1.0 (and our chance at a truly competitive app ecosystem) was supposed to go dark. While the company isn’t about to reverse course, it is giving the refuseniks a break by delaying the shutdown until June 11th. More time is necessary for blackout tests, Twitter says. We wouldn’t lean too heavily on remaining API 1.0-era apps and services when that instability exists, but the extra month does allow for a gentler transition into API 1.1′s brave new world.

Uncover gives your MacBook’s lid a new, Apple-less kind of glow
Etsy stickers adorning your MacBook’s lid, oft making a cute play on the presence of that glowing Apple? That’s so 2012. Uncover, a Dutch company showcasing its talents here at The Next Web Conference in Amsterdam this week, has crafted a new method of customizing one’s MacBook lid. And, perhaps most importantly, it involves the seamless removal of the Apple logo altogether. In essence, these guys use a specialized laser cutting process that can etch out anything your brain can muster — from band logos to company mantras. And, as you’ll see in the gallery below, the Apple logo doesn’t have to be a part of the equation.
The outfit will take in any aluminum-faced MacBook from around the world, and once it lands in Holland, you’ll typically see it headed back to your domicile within four to five days. If you’re selecting one of Uncover’s designs, you can have your machine tweaked for as little as €249 (around $ 325), while completely custom work starts at €599 ($ 780). (And yes, you can just buy a totally new Mac from Uncover as well.) We spoke to Jasper Middendorp, the company’s CEO, and he confessed that only MacBooks are being accepted due to Apple’s unique backlighting arrangement. They’re obviously keen to offer similar work for PCs, but to date, every one he has seen blocks or covers the backlight in some way. For those looking to get it on the fun, allow the source link below to be your guide.

Japan gives Boeing 787 clearance to return to service once battery fixes are implemented

Japan’s transportation minster has announced that the country will allow the troubled 787 Dreamliner airplane to return to the skies once Boeing deploys its battery modifications, reports the Associated Press. This comes one day after the US Federal Aviation Administration gave a similar all-clear order to the 787, though the fix won’t be completely deplyed in Japan until June. “We have reached a conclusion that there is no problem with the judgment by the FAA,” said Transport Minister Akihiro Ohta. “We believe all possible safety measures would be taken to prevent recurrence of similar problems.”
Japan, which is home to nearly half of the 50 787 Dreamliners in service around the world, grounded the planes in mid-January after a pair of…

FocusTwist app for iOS gives you Lytro-esque refocusable images
Arqball has just released the FocusTwist app for iOS that lets you selectively focus after taking an image — without investing $ 400 in a Lytro light field camera. It works by automatically taking several shots with different focus points from your iPhone’s camera, delivering the best results if you hold very still and have subjects in the near foreground and far background. You can then change focus by clicking different parts of the resulting image, which is hosted on the company’s server and can be shared via a link. After playing with the app ourselves for a bit (see More Coverage link), we’ve got to admit we’re stupidly hooked — you can grab it at the source for $ 1.99.

Medion Akoya P2004 gives the UK an understated 24-inch all-in-one for £500
Medion isn’t the best-known PC badge outside of Europe, but it does have an occasional eye for sleek design. We’d say the Lenovo-backed company’s new Akoya P2004 offers that kind of style UK crowd. The all-in-one fits a 23.6-inch, 1080p display into a minimalist design that’s oddly charming for what’s ultimately a budget machine. No one would call the P2004 feature-loaded when it’s carrying a dual-core 3.2GHz Core i3, 4GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and a DVD burner, but the price is right at a frugal £500 ($ 770). The catch? If you like what’s on offer, you’re going to have to swing by ASDA, which has the UK exclusive. Still, we wouldn’t object too much to picking up a fairly tasteful Windows 8 PC alongside the groceries.

NASA gives planet-hunting TESS space telescope go-ahead for 2017 launch
NASA’s Kepler space telescope hasn’t already exactly been a slouch when it concerns planet searching, however that effort will soon be getting a substantial boost thanks to a new goal picked by NASA as part of its Explorer program. Called the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (or TESS), this new space telescope will one-up Kepler with the ability to execute an all-sky survey (an area 400 times larger than previous objectives) to search for transiting exoplanets, with an eye towards worlds comparable to Earth in size. TESS was developed by an MIT-led group, and will be put in exactly what they refer to as a brand-new “Goldilocks” orbit, allowing it to take a trip close enough to the Earth every two weeks for a high-speed information downlink while still remaining safely past the hazardous radiation belts. It’s now set for launch in 2017, when it will be signed up with by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Traveler (NICER), an addition to the International Space Station likewise picked as part of the Explorer program last week that will utilize a procedure called X-ray timing to study neutron stars.
