Mad Genius’ Motion Capture System brings Sony’s break-apart controller idea to life, and then some

Mad Genius' Motion Capture System Sony's breakapart DualShock 3

Fast payday loans For Every One

Remember that break-apart DualShock 3 idea for motion control Sony had five years ago? A new company named Mad Genius Controllers has surfaced with a working prototype that shows such a contraption working in spades. The setup uses a splittable controller and a processing unit to enable seamless motion control and spacial tracking on any title and system. Because Mad Genius doesn’t use any accelerometers or cameras like the current consoles, its creator notes that accuracy of up to 1/100th of an inch is possible

In a video demo with an Xbox 360 version of Skyrim and a modified Xbox gamepad, certain gestures and movements even automate menu selections like a macro. One instance shows the controller being split and held like bow and arrow, highlighting that both sides are tracked in relation to each other — not to mention that the in-game character’s weapon automatically changes without any menu-digging by the user. The current version is merely a wired proof-of-concept, but Mad Genius plans to eventually make it wireless and hit Kickstarter for funding. In the meantime, you can build up anticipation for yourself by checking out the nearly 10-minute long video demo after the break. All that’s left is the inevitable Oculus Rift tie-in (like we’ve just done with this post).

Steve Jobs manga portrays the man as a dreamy, drug-fueled genius that Japanese girls could love

Dscf0356_large

It doesn’t star Ashton Kutcher, and it isn’t written by Aaron Sorkin, but it might be more interesting than both: it’s the Japanese manga adaptation of Steve Jobs’ life. You could be forgiven for thinking that the juice has been squeezed out of this particular story, following 2011′s official biography by Walter Isaacson and a brace of upcoming movies — but if ever there were a medium that can put a new spin on an old tale, a manga series would be it. Today’s publication of Mari Yamazaki’s Steve Jobs, then, is a somewhat notable event. The first volume is now available in the May 2013 issue of girls’ comic anthology Kiss, oddly enough, and it’s quite unlike anything I’ve read before.

Genius Ring Mouse 2 and Ring Presenter thumbs-on

DNP Genius Ring Mouse 2 and Ring Presenter thumbson

With CES 2013 coming to a frigid conclusion here in Las Vegas, we moseyed our way to the Genius booth and went thumbs-on with the Ring Presenter and the Ring Mouse 2. Both use a 2.4GHz wireless USB connection, providing you with a 10-foot radius of Ring Mouse action on either OS X or Windows. The Ring Mouse 2 packs the standard mouse functions, while the Ring Presenter offers left / right / middle buttons, dragging, four-way scrolling and — drum roll, please — a laser pointer. Wearers simply navigate the cursor by perusing their thumb across the Touch Control sensor capable of a 1000dpi sensitivity.

After donning the ring we found it to be quite large, so those with smaller paws might have a harder time using it. From within approximately two feet out we observed great response and ease of use. The duo of diminutive peripherals may prove interesting for a niche that’s tired of the conventional pointer, and if you find yourself in that group, you can purchase either in the near future for $ 50+.

Google’s Turing doodle celebrates his genius, reminds us how dumb we are (video)

Google's Turing doodle celebrates his genius, reminds us how dumb we are

This week sees many corners of the globe commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing. A man whose contribution to the globes of tech and gadgets is immeasurable– a sentiment not lost on Google. Today, geeks and norms worldwide will definitely be waking up to potentially the most complicated doodle to date. Can you set the machine and spell out “Google”? If you can, you’ll be sent off to tons more information about the man himself. This isn’t really the only thing Mountain View’s done to keep his legacy alive, having actually recently assisted Bletchley Park raise funds to purchase (and display) Turing’s papers, and more recently assisting curators at London’s Science Museum with its Codebreaker – Alan Turing’s Life and Legacy exhibition. If you haven’t already, head to Google.com and pop your logic hat on, and if you get stuck, head past the break for a beneficial video.

Microsoft’s Kinect Accelerator program kicked off over a month ago, but at the time we were only made aware of the participant start-ups’ names, not their innovations. Genius Ring Air Mouse scrolls through the FCC, added buttons in tow

Genius Ring Air Mouse scrolls through the FCC, looks to help snag the guy or gal of your dreams

If the Ring Mouse caught your attention a while back, you’re in luck. The Genius Ring Air Mouse has tiptoed through the FCC with a dapper new façade and sporting both air cursor and scroll modes. In addition to the left and right clickers we’ve seen before, this model adds a drag control for moving objects with ease and a back button for web surfing. As you might expect, the device is charged via USB connection and a LED indicator will keep you up to speed on the battery’s status. We can’t recommend you offer this as a gift to your significant other, though, at least not for any special occasion.

Apple TV gets into video discovery, adds movie and TV show Genius Recommendations

Apple added a new wrinkle to its hobby overnight, as AppleInsider reports the Genius recommendation feature added in iTunes 8 now offers up suggestions for movies and TV shows. The new Apple TV feature appears to have been switched on from the back end servers with no firmware update, displaying the new Genius option under Movies and TV Netflix-style as shown above. We’re not sure you really needed anyone else telling you it’s definitely time to check out The Wire or Breaking Bad, but with competitors like Google already taking aim at improving content discovery and recommendations it’s a logical next step for whatever Apple’s living room ambitions ultimately become.

Genius DX-Eco mouse runs without traditional batteries, can charge in three minutes

Genius DX-Eco mouse

The wireless mouse is a great invention, no doubt, but recharging batteries can be a drag (and using disposables is downright bad form). Genius is looking to improve on the current mouse solutions with its DX-Eco mouse — the big news here is that this mouse doesn’t require batteries, nor does it require being centered on a power pad like other battery-free mice out there. Instead, it uses a gold capacitor, more formally known as a electric double layered capacitor. Rather than the chemical reaction found in standard batteries, gold capacitors rely on a storage cell that utilizes the absorption and release of ions. It was theorized a few years ago that this technology could power a mouse, but historically it has been used to provide…

Russian Genius Found To Be Living With 26 Dressed-Up Skeletons In His Apartment

skeleton-dressup.jpg

Anatoly Moskvina, a 45-year old Russian man who can fluently speak 13 languages and considered by many an all around genius, was discovered to be sharing his apartment with the skeletal remains of 26 women he dug up and dressed like dolls. He was busted after his parents came over for an unexpected visit. JESUS! Where the f*** did you hide them when you knew they were coming over?!

Russian media reported the bodies were females aged between 15 and 26 who died years ago.

Life News said Moskvina is a historian who sneaked into graveyards at night, dug up bodies and took them home in plastic bags.Back in his apartment, he dressed up the bodies as dolls wearing dresses and stockings.

Moskvina is believed to have slept in a coffin during one nocturnal cemetery [excursion], BNO News reported.

Hey — geniuses work in mysterious ways, you know? Take me for instance, I live in this apartment with 68 cats. “But you’re not actually a genius.” And this isn’t actually an apartment – it’s a van.

Thanks to Bradley B, who agrees two skeletons in your closet is enough for anyone. Three tops.

Horological Genius George Daniels Dead At 85

The reclusive horologist George Daniels, famous for his work on Breguet and his important co-axial escapement, died last Friday at his home in the Isle of Man. Daniels was 85.

The horologist was one of the first to catalog some of the best known watches in the world, traveling through Europe to examine rare and odd pieces from his favorite manufacturer, Abraham-Louis Breguet, and great watches from manufacturers like Patek Philippe. He was also an avid motorist and noted trickster, pretending to misuse some rare watches while he was photographing, nearly driving their curator to apoplexy.

Daniels was born in 1926 and spent his formative years at the mercy of his drunk carpenter father in North London. His only creative outlet came when he found a watch on the sidewalk and began to tease out its construction.

“It was like seeing the centre of the universe,” he said in the Independent. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do; I wanted to spend the rest of my time with watches.”

After escaping from home into the Army, he spent his spare time fixing soldier’s watches for pocket money and then became a watchseller and repairer. He began to design his own watch movements and his Daniels originals are still sought after in horological circles. He invented the co-axial escapement, now used by Omega in their latest Speedmaster chronographs. He retired to the Isle of Man where he spent his years tinkering and driving his many cars.

It’s rare to find genius in the wild and George Daniels was an exemplar of one man’s dedication to a seemingly dying art.
