GameStop confirms June 1 end to PlayStation 2 trade-ins, will continue selling used stock ‘for several months’

GameStop is shuttering its PlayStation 2 trade-in business as of June 1st, a company spokesperson confirmed to Engadget. “We can confirm that as of June 1st we will no longer be accepting the PS2 console or its related product for trades,” the statement reads. Several of GameStop’s retail locations confirmed to our sister site Joystiq that the June 1st date was accurate after a Reddit posting showed what appeared to be an in-store sign saying as much, and the statement today offers a bit more detail.

For instance, GameStop won’t end sales of used PlayStation 2 hardware, software and accessories — both in store and online — until “several months” after the June 1 cutoff. Those sales, of course, depend on “remaining stock from trades.” Additionally, GameStop reminded us that it’s totally pumped for the upcoming PlayStation 4. “We are very excited about the upcoming PS4 and are making room in our stores for it and other new platforms expected this fall,” the statement says. And hey, with all the extra space available in GameStop stores by “holiday 2013″ (when the PS4 is expected to land at retail), it looks like GameStop will be ready for business. Now that the PS2′s started taking steps toward retirement with Sony ceasing its production in Japan, it seems GameStop doesn’t plan to continue letting the console under its roof for long. According to a leaked in-store display posted to Reddit by eGORapTure, the gaming retailer will longer accept the over 12-year old system for trade-ins as of June 1st. Our friends at Joystiq contacted multiple stores confirm the news to confirm the news and many said the policy is indeed set to go into affect. Unsurprisingly, PS2-related accessories and titles will also be unwelcome when the date rolls around. We’ve reached out to GameStop’s corporate representatives for comment and will let you know what we hear back. OUYA Android Game Console To Launch At Retail In June With Amazon, Best Buy, Target And GameStop

The little Android-based gaming console that could is in on track for March as promised for Kickstarter backers, but the public launch in June looks to be an equally splashy affair with retail support from some of the biggest U.S. chains. OUYA announced today to backers that it would be selling the console to the general public beginning in June at Amazon, Best Buy, Target and GameStop.

Pre-orders begin today for retail partners (they’re currently live at Best Buy, Amazon and Target), with pricing set at $ 99.99 for the console and one controller. Additional controllers are available as well, for $ 49.99 each (the console supports up to four controllers at one time.

OUYA founder Julie Uhrman sat down with the Wall Street Journal to discuss the upcoming launch and some of the details around it, laying out that Kickstarter backers would get their units first, followed by pre-order customers who ordered through the OUYA website in April, and then wide retail release including physical store presence beginning in June. She reiterated some of the details around launch day content previously announced, including the fact that there will be around 200 titles coming to OUYA as of right now, with Final Fantasy 3 one of the premiere titles from launch partner Square Enix, which will feature exclusive content.

Uhrman also revealed that part of the funds the company raised on Kickstarter are going towards directly supporting game development. “There are games that we are supporting today,” she said, but she remained mum about any specific software OUYA itself was backing for the platform. Uhrman also said that while she couldn’t reveal specifics about how many pre-orders the console currently has, the number made since the Kickstarter campaign definitely exceeds the 68,000 backers it picked up during the crowdfunding effort. That, she told the WSJ, was a key factor in attracting big retail partners.

OUYA has come a long way from its origins as a project many were skeptical would ever be anything other than a vaporware dream. The company shipped out its developer units on time, and then worked to redesign the controller in response to user feedback about ergonomics, components used and control location. Now, it looks poised to deliver on its original timeline and hit full scale production shortly after. It’ll be well worth watching how the OUYA competes with this year’s crop of new consoles from players like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, since we’re in a period of transition for each of those companies.

Microsoft Expands $99 Subscription Xbox Program To Best Buy And GameStop

Earlier this month, Microsoft decided to try something a little different when it came to selling the Xbox 360. Their plan: to kick off a pilot program under which customers could shell out a mere $ 99 for a shiny new 4GB Xbox 360 and a Kinect, provided they inked a two-year subscription deal to Xbox Live Gold.

Now, it seems the time has come for that pilot program to spread its wings. Microsoft recently announced that later this month, all Best Buy stores and certain GameStop locations would be selling those subscription-friendly Xbox 360s.

Well, for a little while anyway.

Since this is far from a hard launch, Microsoft’s Larry Hryb notes on his Major Nelson blog that “this next phase of the pilot program will be limited in terms of both timing and the number of units available.”

To add to the difficulty of nabbing a subscription-friendly Xbox, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment President Don Mattick has said that fans have (perhaps unsurprisingly) reacted enthusiastically to the new pricing model. There’s a very real chance that your local gaming retailer will blow through their allotment of sub Xboxs in a jiffy, so Hryb recommends that interested consumers give stores a call to lock down availability details.

A report from the Wall Street Journal helps shed some light on why Microsoft is so dedicated to the slow and steady approach. Part of the process involves making sure that purchasers of this subsidized hardware pass a credit check, and are training employees to position the console correctly to potential customers.

It’s been noted plenty of times now that the subscription model isn’t exactly the best deal for consumers — they ultimately end up spending nearly $ 40 more than if they had just bought the hardware and a 2-year Xbox Live Gold card all at once — but it could prove to be a huge ally in Microsoft’s war to control your living room.

By lowering up-front costs in a way that no other console manufacturer has done before, Microsoft is fighting to lower the barrier to Xbox adoption in an attempt to further expand their reach. Cheap(er) hardware is only part of the equation though, as Microsoft proved the other day with their slew of Xbox-related media announcements that their gaming platform is maturing into something much broader — a full-blown entertainment platform.

Microsoft launched its 4GB Xbox 360 console with a Kinect for $ 99 early last month at its own Microsoft Stores across the US, but the company is expanding the deal to Best Buy and select GameStop stores later this month. The $ 99 deal requires a two-year subscription at $ 14.99 and comes with access to Xbox Live Gold. Microsoft describes the expansion to the new stores as the next part of its “pilot program” for the offer, limited in timing and numbers.

Those interested in the offer can cancel and return their console for a full refund within 30 days, though the first month’s subscription fee of $ 14.99 will not be refunded. There’s also an early termination fee for those wanting to cancel within the two-year subscription: $ 250 in months…

N-Control Avenger Controller Elite reaches GameStop, sells like gangbusters

We got a look at N-Control’s Avenger Controller Elite just last month, and the company is rounding out the hardware’s May release with a full-court press on GameStop. The retailer’s online store is now selling both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 variants of the controller assist as straightforward, bundle-free $ 50 units. Company creator David Kotkin also tells us that the add-ons have had an extremely warm reception so far: although the Elite lineup had an unsung launch at GameStop on May 29th, it sold out on day one and is still in tight supply, with Xbox 360 examples currently on backorder as we write this. N-Control may have had a tough road in the past several months, but it looks as though that perseverance has paid off.

Diversification is the key to longevity. With that likely in mind, GameStop just announced widespread availability of Android tablets throughout its chain of retail stores. This comes after a 200 store trial that started last October.

These aren’t ordinary Android tablets, though. GameStop is pre-loading the Samsung, Asus, Acer, and Toshiba with extra gaming titles such as Sonic CD, Riptide, the Kongregate Arcade app and a free issue of GameStop’s gaming mag, Game Informer. Thanks to these extras and with prices that are inline with other stores, GameStop actually has a chance to capture a bit of the tablet market.

GameStop has recently been bulking up its non-game retail stock in a likely attempt to stop the bleeding. While brick and mortar locations still focus mainly on video games, the website offers headphones, tablet accessories, even refurbished iPods and iPads. The company started testing selling Android tablets last October. Today’s announcement states loud and clear that GameStop sees a future in Android tablets even if no one else does.
