Yahoo revitalizes Flickr with huge images, sharing, and a terabyte of free space (hands-on)

Yahoo has just taken the wraps off a major update to Flickr, it’s long-suffering photo service, and we just sat down to put the revamped service through its paces to see how it has improved — and whether or not it’ll be enough to keep up with the likes of Facebook and Google+. While it’s a massive visual improvement, it’s still works much like the Flickr of old, for better or for worse. But for a visual site like Flickr, those changes make for a huge upgrade over what users experienced before.

Microsoft confirms Windows 8.1 as official name for ‘Blue’ update, free for Windows 8 users

Speaking at JP Morgan’s Media & Telecom Conference today, Windows CFO Tami Reller revealed that Windows 8.1 will be the official name for Windows Blue. The confirmation is not surprising given its presence in recently leaked builds, and it follows Microsoft’s previous promise that developers will be able to install a Public Preview version of Windows 8.1 in late June.
Microsoft will offer Windows 8.1 as a free update to existing Windows 8 users through the Windows Store. The software giant is expected to detail the full improvements to Windows 8.1 at its Build developer conference in June. Freeman on a free OS: Half-Life 2 now available on Steam for Linux

You already know that Half-Life 2 for Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and OS X is excellent, but have you tried it on Linux? Well, yes, technically speaking, you couldn’t actually play that version until this week when it launched on Steam for Linux, but our question stands! Yeah, that’s what we thought. Now that that’s straightened out, we might warn you about the beta nature of HL2‘s Linux launch. Like other Valve titles recently released to Steam for Linux, Half-Life 2 is merely a beta for now. Should you already own a copy for another platform, it’ll show up in your Steam library as available for download like any other crossplatform game. Of course, you’re probably too tied up with Half-Life 2‘s recently added Oculus Rift support on PC to think about a plain old keyboard/mouse experience. And hey, we can’t blame you for that.
Interestingly, Valve’s internal Steambox is powered by Steam’s Linux version; it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Valve scaling up its Linux game library ahead of the retail debut of various Steamboxes (or Steamboxen, if you will). That remains to be seen, of course, as Valve’s made no official announcement regarding that project’s availability.

When Slacker launched its big software overhaul in February, many were skeptical that a refresh could bring it back to prominence. Apparently, all that doubt was misguided: Slacker says it’s racked up 6 million new listeners in the past three months, 3.5 million of which are on mobile. They’re more involved, too — there are 100,000 new paying customers, iOS installs have tripled and members of all kinds tune in for an average of 25 percent longer. And did we mention that Slacker may even benefit from the rush? Where some peers face a constant fight to stay above water without enough premium customers, Slacker says both its ad-supported free radio and paid on-demand service are profitable. While there’s no guarantee the company will hold on to those bedazzled new users, it’s good to see renewed competition in a field with fewer and fewer participants.
