OUYA console gets torn down, found to be highly repairable
Now that OUYA consoles are shipping out to the masses, the folks at iFixit were able to grab a box and immediately undo all of the precious packaging work accomplished at the factory. In its usual style, the site gently dissected the world’s best-known Android game console, commenting on “a very clean and simple layout.” Overall, the splaying seemed to happen with little to no fuss, with the fan being the only modular (and moving) component in the entire thing. All told, the OUYA notched a 9 out of 10 on the all-important Repairability Meter, aided by the fact that only standard-head screws were used, and that no abstract glues or other black magic was used while piecing it all together. You’ll definitely want to give the source link a look if you’re yearning for more eye candy.

Human brain cells found to boost learning ability in mice

A recent study by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center has revealed new properties of human brain cells understood as astrocytes, utilizing them to improve discovering ability in mice. Experts injected the cells– formerly viewed as relatively worthless helpers to more main neurons– into the brains of a team of mice, then checked the animals against a control team provided extra cells from their own types. After a six-month maturation period, those injected with human cells were able to learn their way around a maze significantly faster, and were likewise able to rapidly link an unique noise with an electric shock.
Released in the diary Cell Stem Cell earlier this month, the research has the possible to change …

Well I Don’t Like The Sound Of That: Bat-Eating Spiders Found On Every Continent Except Antarctica

WARNING: SPIDER PICTURES. That should kind of go without saying though because it’s a post about spiders, you know? Stop emailing me.
In news that’s sure to send real estate prices on Antarctica skyrocketing, scientists have confirmed that spiders that prey on bats have been found on every continent except the icy giant. I’m coming, Santa! “Antarctica is at the south pole.” Right, I knew that.
The researchers write that bat-catching spiders were reported from “virtually every continent,” with the exception of Antarctica. About 80% of the reported “bat catches” were performed by web-building spiders and 12% to hunting spiders (i.e. spiders that forage without the use of a web):
While in some instances bats entangled in spider webs may have died of exhaustion, starvation, dehydration, and/or hyperthermia (i.e., non-predation death), there were numerous other instances where spiders were seen actively attacking, killing, and eating the captured bats (i.e., predation). This evidence suggests that spider predation on flying vertebrates is more widespread than previously assumed.
I love bats, so obviously this is heartbreaking news for me. *wiping fake tear* Now if you’ll excuse me, I need a minute to compose myself. Actually, I’m just going to take the rest of the afternoon off. If my boss asks tell him somebody died. No — tell him EVERYBODY died. That should buy me coming in late tomorrow too.
Hit the jump for a compilation shot of a bunch of bats in webs.![]()

Pet Tortoise Found Alive In Locked Storage After 30 Years

Seen here looking pissed as hell, Manuela the red-footed tortoise reluctantly poses for a picture after having gone missing from the Almeida family residence in 1982. Turns out they’d just accidentally locked her in a storage room on the second story of their house for the last 30 years! That, wow, that’s just terrible caretaking. Even most pet rocks wouldn’t survive that.
…it seems Manuela was hanging out for 30 years in the upstairs storeroom where Leonel Almeida, the father, kept all sorts of old junk he hadn’t gotten around to fixing up.
When Leonel died earlier this month, Leandro and his siblings decided to clean out the storeroom, and that’s how Manuela came to be by the curb.
According to veterinary scientist Jeferson Pires, tortoises like Manuela are remarkably resilient creatures, and can survive two to three years without eating anything. While they typically subsist on an omnivore’s diet in the wild, the Almeidas think Manuela got by on termites.
Granted I didn’t know some tortoises can go two or three years without eating anything, but what about drinking? Was there some water supply in the room? Did the family never hear her crawling around up there and open the room to check for ghosts? When reached for comment, Manuela the tortoise had this to say, “F*** you guys, let me outside.”
Thanks to Hornito, who found his missing hamster after eight years. Wait — I thought hamsters only live like two? Oh — oooooh, I’m sorry man.![]()

LG has found 300 homes for its $20K, 84-inch, 4K TV in Korea so far
Throwing a $ 20k Ultra HD TV set onto the market when there’s no 4K content of any kind in sight is quite the leap of faith, but LG told ChosunBiz (and confirmed to us) that it’s already found 300 deep-pocketed videophiles in Korea for its 84-inch 84LM9600 since it went on sale. Judging by CES 2013 the industry is all-in on the tech, so that news hopefully bodes well for the near future of UHDTV. It’s safe to say that consumer interest has been piqued by the pixel-rich screens, but whether that’ll translate into the kind of numbers we’ve seen recently for run-of-the-mill HDTV will likely depend on the all-important sticker — which will have to be much, much lower than recent models.

Astronomers have found the largest structure in the universe

An international team of astronomers led by the University of Central Lancashire in the UK has discovered “the largest known structure in the universe.” The team says that the recently observed large quasar group — comprised of dozens of highly energetic star-like objects — has a typical size of 500 Megaparsecs, but the size of the cluster is closer to 1200 Mpc at its widest point. To put that into perspective, the distance between our own Milky Way galaxy and Andromeda is about 0.75 Mpc.
The discovery has larger implications for the study of cosmology too. Albert Einstein’s Cosmological Principle states that the universe looks the same regardless of the observation point when viewed at a large enough scale. Einstein’s principle…
