UK folding plug becomes a reality, shipping for £25 on February 28th

MU folding plug

If you have travelled to Britain or live in one of the four countries that form the United Kingdom, then you’ll have some experience with British plugs. The three-pin power plug used in the UK and Hong Kong is as respected a tradition as fish and chips takeaways and Earl Grey, but its size has always been a massive issue. South Korea-born Min-Kyu Choi, who studied product design at London’s Royal College of Art, decided to do something about that problem and created a folding plug concept in 2009.

Choi’s prototype has now reached reality and is available for pre-order, shipping February 28th. Although the new “Mu” plug simply works as a USB adapter for smartphones, the slender package will likely appeal to travellers and commuters who…

MIT’s folding CityCar takes a spin on video, still no room for humans

The MIT Media Lab has been working on a folding, stackable electric vehicle for quite a few years now, but it seems those have at least been fairly productive years, as the so-called CityCar has now finally progressed to something resembling a finished prototype. The only problem for those eager to hop into one is that it’s a half-sized prototype, which makes accommodating a driver just a tad difficult. It does do a fairly good job of folding itself up though, and MIT expects a full-size version to go into production in 2013. Interestingly, MIT doesn’t necessarily see people actually owning the vehicles themselves, but it would like to see them be made available throughout cities — letting you rent one for a short trip across town, for instance, and not have to worry about returning it. Head on past the break to see it on video courtesy of The Next Web.

Folding, Electric Vienna Bike Is Dorky But Practical

The US has yet to join the rest of the world in the large-scale deployment of powered bikes, and I doubt this particular item will change that, but it’s always worth noting when a nice, practical vehicle like this shows up. This one is called the Vienna Bike, and it’s designed by Valentin Vodev of Pixstudio, a design studio (naturally) based (naturally) in Vienna.

Its narrow (only 35cm wide) trike frame means extra stability for the load in the back while still providing bike-like handling. The platform in the back extends and there’s an interesting hexagonal pod that fits onto it for stowing groceries, helmets, or— trees, apparently.

There’s an electric motor that can propel it independently, or you can set it to pedal-assist. Pixstudio claims the bike will go up to 60km on a charge, though I presume that’s with no cargo and a Vienna-sized passenger willing to pedal a bit. And another source says 40-60 miles, which is obviously more — so maybe they’re not quite sure about that yet.

In addition to a range which, whether 30 or 60 miles, is suited for a day’s errand-running, it folds up for storage, as you can see at right. Like I said, practical, right? If it’s not too heavy, it could easily be taken up a flight or two of steps to an apartment. Say, my apartment.

The Vienna Bike seems to be an evolution of the studio’s “Biquattro” prototype, which has been upgraded, smoothed, and painted to produce the new version. It’s not available for purchase yet, being just today shown in “working prototype” form to the public at Bridgestone’s Eco-Rally event.

YikeBike unveils less-expensive folding electric bike, Jackie Chan dons celebratory tuxedo

Our main complaint with the folding electric YikeBike — besides the not-quite-catchy name – was the $ 3,795 price tag. The company’s trying to ease the price pain with the Fusion, a new model that’ll cost you $ 1,995. The savings come from replacing the carbon fiber body with aluminum and composites, which does, unfortunately, add about 6.6 pounds, pushing the total weight over 30 pounds. But that shouldn’t hamper portability, and you’ll still get six miles of travel on a single charge (or 12 miles with an optional battery backpack). YikeBike will sell the cheaper model through a network of distributors, allowing it to expand its customer base beyond the 250 bikes sold so far, to, among others, Google and Jackie Chan. So if you previously couldn’t afford to follow in the kung fu master’s tracks, well, now you have one less excuse.

[Thanks, Dan]

Shocker! Jorno folding Bluetooth keyboard available for pre-order

Of all the Bluetooth keyboards that have been released for portable devices lately, this is certainly one of them. Cervantes Mobile’s Jorno doesn’t look particularly comfortable, but it does fold up into a tiny square, it’s got a cradle that will fit most handsets, and it’s compatible your favorite Bluetooth HID profile-enabled devices. It will be out early next year for $ 99, although if you pre-order it now you can get it for a smooth $ 79 — which is probably the upper limits of what we’d pay for it. That is, if we were going on a modern day On The Road-type odyssey with nothing but a backpack and our dreams, and an iPad to keep a journal of our thoughts. Which we aren’t. PR after the break.
