MIT’s Hiriko ‘foldable’ car said to be priced at around $16k when it launches later next year
There’s certainly an excellent amount of hype behind that Spanish, MIT-backed EV project called Hiriko, and although we would certainly been offered a concept of just how much this miniature ride would certainly cost to make, we still hadn’t heard any sort of word on the official MSRP. Well, according to PSFK, the website’s heard verification that the unorthodox Hiriko electric auto will be priced at “around” $ 16,000 when it finally launches in 2013, which could possibly be thought about a small price to pay for driving around in a foldable and extremely special four-wheeler. However, we’ve yet to hear what roadways around the globe the Hiriko Fold will certainly be hitting after launch, however as you might or might not know, the business does say it’ll be perfect for cities like San Francisco, Barcelona and Berlin.

Flexible Batteries Promise Thinner And Lighter “Foldable” Electronics
Professor Keon Jae Lee at the Korean Advanced Institute Of Science And Technology created a solid-state flexible battery that retains is energy level when folded, spindled, and or mildly mutilated. The battery could mean future ereaders and tablets could be paper thin and partially foldable, ushering in interesting new device designs.
These rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are actually printed on a thin film. Applying battery material to rollable displays has been a big problem for the gadget manufacturers thus far but this breakthrough could change the way we think about surfaces, screens, and case materials.
As you can see from the video, the thin film battery can be bent over and over again without reducing voltage output. Professor Lee expects this technology to be part of “next-generation fully flexible electronic systems” but there was no discussion of potential commercial adoption. I guess we’ll just have to wait for our EZ Roll Soft-Style iPods for another few years.

The Noteboard Is An Amazing $10 Foldable Pocket Whiteboard
Traditional whiteboards are great for nearly everything but portability. Scribbling down physics problems? Sure. Impromptu game of tic-tac-toe? Of course. Folding up and putting it in your pocket? Not really possible with a normal whiteboard. But the Noteboard isn’t a normal whiteboard. It’s a dual-side, foldable whiteboard that might just change the world (but probably not).
When unfolded the Noteboard is about the size of 27 notecards but it collapses into a pocket-friendly package. The Noteboard costs just $ 10 and includes a band to keep the whole thing together along with a black whiteboard marker. Sure, you could probably make one yourself, but not for $ 10.
As the creator notes on the website, the Noteboard is a great alternative to tablets and even paper. What he doesn’t mention is that whiteboard markers can be pretty messy at times, leaving behind a sort of greasy junk. However, for $ 10, it could be a novel tool for the constant note taker, occasional scribbler or the start-up founder desperately brainstorming ideas for a pivot.

Samsung’s foldable AMOLED display: no creases, even after 100,000 tries

Samsung demoed some fascinating AMOLEDs at this year’s CES, including 4.5-inch flexible and 19-inch transparent displays — neither of which, sadly, will reach the market any time soon. But the innovation train keeps on rolling, and Sammy’s Advanced Institute of Technology now has a prototype foldable display. Its two panels have a closing radius of only 1mm, meaning they practically touch when closed, yet show no visible crease when opened. In fact, the developers performed 100,000 folding-unfolding cycles to test the junction; the negligible 6% decrease in brightness was invisible to the human eye. They used commercially-available silicone rubber to achieve that seamless look, and the prototype featured a protective glass cover which could also function as a touchscreen. Obviously there’s a market for touchscreens you can fold up and put in your pocket; here’s hoping Samsung can make them available sooner rather than later.

Readius Foldable E-Reader To Be Resurrected

Remember the Readius, an e-reader with a foldable screen? Vaguely? The last we heard of this device was back in 2008, so we were pretty sure it was kaput, but apparently the company has been bought and the project funded. The device may actually live to see daylight!
The focus of Polymer Vision has always been flexible displays, and they were certainly among the first to show off such a thing when we heard about the Readius in 2007. Since then, many companies have started looking into it &mdsah; just a couple days ago we posted about E Ink’s latest attempts.
The new device is… well, actually, there isn’t a new device. Not yet. What you see at the top of this post is just a concept. For the life of me, though, I can’t figure it out. First, I don’t know why you would want it to fold up into a candybar phone. And what’s with the two screen sizes? It can’t be both. Folding is one thing — stretching is another. It’s also full color, while the first was a passive monochrome display.
The final design will probably be nothing like this, but now that they’re out of stealth mode, we may see a real device later this year or at CES. Folding is definitely one of the more interesting features e-readers could add, so I’m looking forward to see if they can pull it off.
