After mapping ocean floor, crews renew search for Malaysia Airlines flight 370

Six months ago, Malaysia Airlines flight 370 disappeared with 239 passengers on board after departing from Kuala Lumpur. After an initial frantic search to find the Boeing 777’s black boxes before their batteries petered out, rescue crews called off efforts and began a major undertaking to map the seafloor. Now, four months later, those maps are complete, and the search is beginning anew this month as three ships plan to scour the search area for debris by dragging a sensor device just 330 feet (100 meters) above the seabed at a speed of seven miles per hour, according to the Associated Press.

The device, known as a towfish, is equipped with sonar to produced detailed imagery of the ocean floor, and they are tethered to the ships with…

NEPTUNE is streaming from the ocean floor

NEPTUNE, otherwise known as the North-East Pacific Time-Series Underwater Networked Experiment, is relaying real-time data from the bottom of the sea to researchers and the public alike. A detailed Ars Technica profile examines the subsea infrastructure that spans 800km (about 500 miles) in length and costs non-profit organization Ocean Networks Canada $ 17 million a year to maintain. The article explores how NEPTUNE was assembled atop the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate and the meticulous work required to keep it fully operational. It’s an intricate labor, but it ensures that 130 or so instruments attached to the network continue to provide data on everything from seismic activity to the health of the ocean.

I Drank Eight Umbreons And Slept On The Kitchen Floor: Frozen Pokemon Themed Cocktails

frozen-pokemon-cocktails.jpg

This is a series of frozen Pokemon cocktails mixed by Tumblr-er Meow Purr Nom. They were inspired by Eevee and the eight different Pokemon it can evolve into. Personally, I’m feeling the Umbreon and Leafeons, but if you’re buying I’ll drink anything including wine coolers and any beers you can’t finish.

Eevee: cake vodka, Kahlua, Bailey’s, chocolate eclair ice cream bar, chocolate syrup

Vaporeon: rum, Malibu, blue curacao, pineapple juice, Sprite
Jolteon: tequila, red bull, margarita mix, lemon juice, Sprite, salt on the rim
Flareon: fireball whiskey, peach schnapps, iced tea, lemonade, dash of strawberry syrup (for color)
Espeon: strawberry vodka, Hpnotiq Harmonie, Chambord, cranberry juice, Sprite
Umbreon: bourbon, coke, lemon juice, orange juice
Glaceon: rum, blue curacao, peppermint schnapps, lemonade, soda water, sugar on the rim
Leafeon: tequila, peach schnapps, lime juice, ginger ale, mint, honey and a drop of chocolate syrup for decoration
Sylveon: cake vodka, strawberry vodka, Bailey’s, strawberry shortcake ice cream bar, cream, strawberry syrup

Truthfully, I don’t usually go for frozen drinks because you can’t drink them fast enough without brain freezing, but I will occasionally get one if the weather is warm. “But don’t you live in LA?” Haha — YES I DO. *loading beer helmet with frozen margaritas*

Thanks to Yum Yum, who sounds even better tasting and probably has less than half the calories.

Entire Floor Painted Like You’re Falling Into Space

space-floor-1.jpg

This is the custom floor painting job performed by Graffiti Decoration as an art installation in someone’s house. It makes it look like the floor is falling away and there’s nothing but outerspace beneath you. Which is weird because I have dreams like that sometimes. AND GUESS HOW THEY ALL END. “With you waking up on a bus stop bench outside a bar somewhere?” Ding ding ding!

Hit the jump for several more shots.

MC Escher Inspired Interlocking Wooden Floor Lizards

escher-lizard-floor-1.jpg

These are the wooden floor tiles cut by Spanish flooring business Arbore. They were motivated by MC Escher’s famous ‘Reptiles’ drawing, even if the company declines to confess it. They did admit it though, so we’re cool. No have to make indicators and go stand apart front of their workplaces picketing. I imply unless you want to, where case I’m down. I’ve never ever been to Spain before and I think I could compose it off as a company cost. Or as a giant blunder, depending on whether or not we get arrested.

Hit the jump for Escher’s initial drawing and a couple more of the floor.

This is a short video of Neil DeGrasse Tyson cutting a rug at some party to Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’. He’s a surprisingly good dancer. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still destroy him in a dance-off, but it wouldn’t be my easiest win (and may require a pocketful of marbles).
