Fujifilm announces FinePix XP200 ruggedized camera, S8400W superzoom

Ready to hear about some mid-range Fujifilm point-and-shoots? Let’s do this. The FinePix XP200 looks like the more exciting model of the bunch, so we’ll start there. Available with red, purple, yellow, green, blue and orange glossy finishes, this ruggedized camera packs a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor with image stabilization, a 28-140mm lens, 3-inch, 920k-dot LCD, a 10-frames-per-second continuous shooting mode, 1080/60i video and built-in WiFi for pushing pics to a companion app. It’s a ruggedized cam, so that means it’s waterproof to 50 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10°C) and shockproof to 6.6-foot drops.
The other flavor is a superzoom model, or a “bridge camera,” as manufacturers are calling them these days. The lens is the focus here, and this one’s got a 24-1,056mm, 44x optic with a maximum aperture range of f/2.9 to f/6.5. There’s also optical image stabilization and a Super Macro mode that lets you shoot subjects that are just 0.39 inch from the lens. There’s a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, sensitivity through ISO 12,800, 1080/60i video capture, a 10 fps continuous shooting mode and WiFi. You can preview images on the 3-inch, 460k-dot LCD or the 201k-dot electronic viewfinder. This model, the FinePix S8400W, comes in black and ships in May for $ 350. Fujifilm opens the FinePix camera floodgates ahead of CES

Fujifilm knows that you’re almost certainly going through gadget withdrawal in these days and hours leading up to CES, so it’s unleashing not one, but ten FinePix cameras for your pointing-and-shooting pleasure. It’s a long list, so get comfortable. Let’s start with the JX580, which will offer up 16 megapixels, 5x optical zoom and a three-inch LCD for $ 119, when it drops in February. The JX500 will be hitting the same month for $ 99, bringing 14 megapixels, 5x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD. The AX550 brings 16 megapixels and 5x optical zoom. It’ll be hitting in March for $ 89. All three slim cameras feature intelligent flash, tracking auto focus and scene recognition auto.
And what of the FinePix JZ250 and JZ100? We’re glad you asked. The JZ250 brings a 16 megapixel sensor, 8x optical zoom and a newly brightened three-inch LCD to the table, while the JZ100 rocks 14 megapixels, 8x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD. Both can shoot movies in 720p and will hit retail in March for $ 149 and $ 129, respectively. The T400 and T350 both offer up Scene Recognition Auto, face detection and Motion Panorama Mode, as well as 10x optical zoom and three-inch LCDs. The T400 does 16 megapixels and the T350 tops out at 14. They’ll run $ 179 and $ 159 when they’re released in March.
The FinePix XP150 and XP100 do the rugged thing, shockproof, freezeproof, dustproof and waterproof to 33 feet. The XP50, meanwhile, is also durable — albeit slightly less so. All three cameras shoot 1080p video and have dual image stabilization and tracking autofocus. The XP150 also brings GPS and geo-tagging to the table. The three cameras will hit in March for $ 279, $ 259 and $ 199. Full PR after the break.

Fujifilm’s FinePix X100 ships March 2011 for $1,000, we go hands-on

It’s fitting that Fujifilm’s thoroughly gorgeous FinePix X100 kicked off this week’s flood of Photokina releases, and now we’ve learned a few more precious details from the outfit’s press conference. For starters, it’ll be a non-zoom apparatus, much like Olympus’ Zuiko-equipped concept that was also launched here in Köln. Fujifilm’s Adrian Clarke noted that the decision to include only a 23mm f/2 fixed lens was made in order to not make image quality compromises that are necessary when allowing for a zoom. We’re sure that’ll strike some as displeasing, but those who aren’t afraid of moving forward and back could probably care less. Furthermore, he affirmed that the company was aiming for a March 2011 ship date, with a retail price to hit near the $ 1,000 mark. That’s hardly affordable, but Fuji’s making no bones about this being a decidedly high-end piece.
After the presser, we were able to score some hands-on time with a pre-production model, and we have to say, this thing just feels like a thousand bucks. It’s as solid as a stone, though light packers won’t appreciate just how heavy it is. Regardless, the body exudes quality, and the grip was as comfortable as ever. Sadly, no fully functional units are present here at Photokina, but we’re cautiously optimistic that we’ll see one at CES. It’s doubtful that Fuji will sell oodles of these given the limitations and price, but to the niche that’s interested, things are looking up.

Wow, Fujifilm. Just… wow. This is an amazing piece of work. The FinePix X100 is… not really comparable to anything on the market. It’s got the sensor of a DSLR (12-megapixel APS-C) but is set up like an old-school rangefinder, with an actual optical viewfinder. Or rather, a hybrid viewfinder, since they can overlay information on it like an EVF… but it’s still a real image, not an electronic one. This thing looks nuts.
The lens is a 23mm F/2, which they say they’ve had specially made for this body and sensor. The LCD on the back is a ridiculous 800×600 pixels in 2.8″, putting it on iPhone 4 levels as far as pixel density goes. It’ll shoot 5FPS, ISO goes from 200 to 600, and it’ll do 720p video.
But the body! Oh my god! It’s designed after the original cameras we all miss so much. It’s mostly made of metal, including the dials up top, which should give it a hell of a nice heft and feel. I sure hope it has full time manual focus too.
Man, I want one already. It’s like what the Sigma DP series should have been… and to be honest, I’d prefer this thing over the micro four-thirds bodies that are out there right now. Too bad it’s still “in development” and won’t be available until early 2011. Don’t worry, Fujifilm. I can wait.

Hello, beautiful! The clock just struck midnight here in the wilds of Cologne, Germany, and it’s safe to say that Photokina 2010 is underway. Fujifilm’s press event isn’t scheduled until Tuesday, but it looks as if it’ll be teasing us all by releasing information on its drop-dead gorgeous new FinePix X100 tonight. This rangefinder-esque cam packs a 12.3 megapixel APS-C sensor, and it’s obviously designed to go mano-a-mano with Micro Four Thirds and the slew of other mirrorless / interchangeable lens compacts that are hitting the market. Aside from supporting 720p movies, boasting an EXR processor and shipping with a 23mm F2 Fujinon lens, this new handheld includes a Hybrid Viewfinder that enables users to toggle between optical and electronic viewfinders and display intricate shooting information right into the OVF.
There’s also a 2.8-inch rear LCD, a hot shoe on top and a magnesium alloy top / base plate that might be the sexiest we’ve ever seen on a camera in this sector. Low-light shooters will appreciate the ISO range of 200 to 6400, and there’s also 5fps continuous shooting, a full-on manual mode, SD / SDHC / SDXC card support and dimensions of 127- x 75- x 54mm. Something tells us a lot of to-be DSLR buyers will be shifting to this far more portable alternative when it drops in early 2011… provided it doesn’t cost a small fortune, of course. Needless to say, we’ll be first in line come Tuesday to (prayerfully) get some hands-on time with this beaut. Video after the break.

Fujifilm’s durable, dunkable FinePix XP10 compact camera gets a review

It’s always hard to justify spending extra for a waterproof camera that will do you good at the beach but deliver mediocre image quality everywhere else. Photography Blog has taken a look at Fujifilm’s new 12 megapixel FinePix XP10 waterproof shooter and, while it predictably falls short of DSLR-level quality (or even high-end compacts), it overall scores a very positive review thanks to its 5x zoom lens, 720p video recording, solid construction, and a “pleasingly compact” design that we think looks very funky (in a good way). The camera’s cause is also helped dramatically by an MSRP of £169.99, or $199.95, and we’re finding this thing available online for way less than that. For that kind of money this thing wouldn’t make a bad side-kick for your go-to camera, a sort of stunty stand-in for when the going gets tough… or perhaps just damp.
