Yay For Extinction: Ancient ‘Buzzsaw Mouthed’ Shark

This is an artist’s entertainment of Helicoprion, a 270-million year old shark that roamed the ocean preying on various other marine life WITH ITS FULL 360-DEGREE SPIRAL BUZZSAW OF TEETH. Now? Now it’s extinct other than for in our headaches starting tonight.
“When the animal closed its mouth on prey, the spiral of sharp teeth turned in reverse, like a circular saw, and slashed through the meat,” lead author Leif Tapanila, an associate teacher in the Department of Geosciences at Idaho State College, informed Discovery News.
No living land or sea pet directly resembles Helicoprion– specifically it’s buzz-saw tooth whorl.
“It was actually an unlikely animal, and perhaps one of the finest examples of a successful ‘Hopeful Beast,’” Tapanila said, clarifying that this refers to evolutionary procedures that could result in really uncommon body types, with most doomed to failure.
Oh man, I knew a children in intermediate school who had truly gnarly looking teeth like that. All the various other children utilized to tease him. Me, I’m discussing me. I had really thick bottle-cap glasses too. I really had an university girlfriend break up with me when I revealed her my old yearbooks.

Will finding high ground save you when SkyNet becomes self-aware and Terminators annihilate the human race? Doubtful, thanks to Japanese robotics company Muscle Corp., which has built a robot that can climb ladders…and other stuff. “Dream Robo” certainly isn’t the first wall-climbing robot, but its eerie anthropomorphic shape is guaranteed to send its victims into paroxysms of terror when it slowly, inexorably make its way up the side of a building to sate its hunger for human blood. Muscle Corp. President Hirofumi Tamai says the robot only took three months to build, with 15 companies collaborating to create the vertical killing machine. The device incorporates five motors: two in the shoulders, two in the legs, one in the back, all of which can be seen in action in the video above. No word on the specs of the beams that rain hot, fiery death from its chitinous, soulless black eyes, but we’ll be honest — our fear wouldn’t allow us to inquire.

Happy Sunday! The BP spill could trigger a methane explosion, mass extinction

This is a totes magotes bummer: according to theories posited by the author of this piece, Terrance Aym, and backed up by data from geo-chemists like Northwestern University’s Gregory Ryskin, the BP oil spill could release massive amounts of methane gas and, as an end result, blow out the entire seabed, leading to “massive venting” and large fissures in the sea bottom. This, in turn, would kill us all just as other mass extinctions wiped out life on earth during similar ruptures 251 million years ago and 55 million years ago.
In short, here’s what’s up:
The bottom line: BP’s Deepwater Horizon drilling operation may have triggered an irreversible, cascading geological Apocalypse that will culminate with the first mass extinction of life on Earth in many millions of years.

Basically the sea floor explodes and clouds of methane-infused water start floating over the land. These catch fire and explode quite suddenly, unleashing a massive fireball, killing everything in its path. Sea levels will rise and fall, entire ecosystems will collapse, and we’ll be left with the bill. All because we wanted to fill up on unleaded.
Will this really happen? It seems that Ayn is positing based on previous explosions that the BP deepwater drill could create a catastrophic eruption. This does not mean that the Gulf will explode in a ball of fire, but it does give one pause. It sounds almost like the explosions that rocked the world in The Road and if we know anything about apocalyptic fiction, it almost never comes true.
