Sony’s 2012 PlayStation torn down, shows its evolved roots (video)

We’ve looked intensely at the outside of the redesigned PlayStation 3 ever since it was unveiled in Tokyo last month. Getting a look inside has proven unusually tougher, but French YouTube member K0st3yr has volunteered to do what few gamers dare and tear down Sony’s updated console. As we’ve quickly learned, Sony hasn’t chosen to radically rework the insides like Microsoft did with the slim Xbox 360. The Cell processor and its RSX graphics companion are still separate parts, and a similar power supply capacity suggests that neither of the main chips has been built on a more efficient manufacturing process. Instead, it’s everything else that has been given the shuffle: a smaller Blu-ray drive and more clever overall construction appear to be the tickets to the 20 percent volume reduction compared to the last model. While the revealed internals might be disappointments to those who were hoping the PS3′s possible sendoff would involve more of a bang than a whimper, they do hint that Sony might have breathing room if it wants to advance the design any further. Just have some popcorn and a grasp of French on hand if you’d like to have a peek at the three-part video dissection found after the break.

Hela Disc: The Aerobie, Evolved

When it comes to flying discs (“frisbees” to the vulgar), there are many to choose from. I personally like the Koosh Woosh, but as they don’t sell that particular relic any more, I’m forced to recommend other options for summer fun. The Hela Disc looks promising: it’s like an Aerobie donut-style disc but unlike that worthy item, won’t slice your head off if you miss the catch.
The story is that the creators noticed some strange properties of a piece of cardboard they were about to throw away, which led them to design the slightly funky shape of the Hela. It’s not just a flat ring, but has a curve to it and some other micro-features that make it easier to, say, throw straight in gusty weather. Sounds good to me.
They only cost $ 19, so why not pick one up for your next trip to the out of doors? I’ve already got my Woosh, so I’m set, but if you want to impress your friends with throwing skillz, give this thing a try.

Halo: Combat Evolved HD Re-Make Unofficially Set For November 15

It looks like there will be a Halo: Combat Evolved re-make after all. So says mighty Joystiq. It’ll be available on November 15, 2011, 10 years to the day after the game’s original release for the Xbox. Oh, happy day!
What can we expect with this re-make? Supposedly it’ll be running at a higher resolution, 1080p, but who knows if that’s 1080p native or merely upscaled like previous Halo 360 games. I’m certain gamers who exclusively use consoles have no idea what “HD gaming†truly means. Rumblings of a 3D mode, too, but if it’s running in 3D I can’t imagine how low the resolution would have to be. The Xbox 360 isn’t a top-of-the-line Nvidia GPU, you know.
And it won’t necessarily just be a higher resolution, oh my no. The game’s developers, believed to be Saber Interactive, will be using entirely new art assets. She won’t be using the Reach engine, though. Mystery!
Multi-player? Yup, at least online co-op.
If true, and I’ve no read to believe it’s not true, I imagine E3 this year will be all about Halo. Hmm.
