Razer enlists Rahul Sood of VoodooPC fame as advisor to its board of directors

Razer enlists Rahul Sood of VoodooPC fame as advisor to its board of directors

Fast payday loans For Every One

Rahul Sood is still keeping busy at Microsoft, but he’s adding yet another role to his resume: advisor to Razer’s board of directors. The VoodooPC founder says he views the gaming-focused firm as the spiritual successor to his PC outfit’s previous work, and Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan effectively considers the feeling mutual. “In fact, it was his work at VoodooPC that inspired us to enter the systems business, and I believe his advice will be invaluable to us here at Razer,” says Tan. In his new capacity, Sood will help guide the company with everything from product development to sales. We can only hope the collaboration leads to more Ferrari tie-ins and good advice when it comes to gaming hardware like the Razer Blade and Razer Edge.

ASUS enlists BlueStacks to run Android apps on Windows PCs, skips all the OS juggling

ASUS Transformer AiO hands-on

Turns out that you won’t have to buy a Transformer AiO and use two whole operating systems to run Android apps on that ASUS Windows PC — the Taiwan PC builder has struck a deal to run Bluestacks’ App Player for key software on the ASUS@Vibe side of its new Open Cloud Computing service. The code layer will give free rein to play games like Fruit Ninja or Defender as well as run more sober titles like Evernote and Pulse. Apps will be available across every type of PC ASUS makes, including Eee PC netbooks and other models without touchscreens, but they won’t always be gratis. ASUS is providing free Android apps for just the first six months of service and will be charging an unspecified rate for unlimited access afterwards, so you may want to opt for that Transformer AiO or a PadFone to run mobile apps the old-fashioned way.

Sky 3D enlists Stephen Fry to explain the technology ahead of its October 1 launch (video)

With the official launch of Sky 3D to UK home viewers just days away, the broadcaster’s bringing in the big guns. Sure, we’ve tried explaining the latest in 3D technology ourselves, but it requires a special touch to claim to have invented 3D and still come off as infallibly polite at the same time. For that, you need a professional, and who better than Stephen Fry? If you weren’t first in line at the shoppes to buy a 3DTV this video probably won’t turn you into a believer right away — checking in to your local pub for a pint and a Premier League game is a more effective route — but it’s an entertaining preview all the same. The video is embedded after the break and in case this alarm clock showing up on the site, twice, wasn’t enough of a clue, we’ll feature nearly anything with Stephen Fry involved, especially when he kicks it off by saying “Hello, Engadget.”

DARPA enlists NVIDIA to build exascale supercomputer that’s ’1000x faster’ than today’s quickest

At this point, it’s pretty obvious that GPUs will soon be playing a huge role in modern day supercomputers — a role that may just rival that of the tried-and-true CPU. Virginia Tech is gleefully accepting $2 million in order to build a GPU and CPU-enabled HokieSpeed supercomputer, and today DARPA is handing out $25 million to NVIDIA in order to develop “high-performance GPU computing systems.” Specifically the Defense Department’s research and development arm is aiming to address a so-called “crisis in computing,” and if all goes well, the four-year project will eventually yield a “new class of exascale supercomputers which will be 1,000-times more powerful than today’s fastest supercomputers.” That’s a pretty lofty goal, but NVIDIA will be aided by Cray, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a half-dozen US universities along the way. And yeah, if ever anyone’s ego was prepared to topple Moore’s Law, it’d be this guy.

South Korea enlists armed sentry robots to patrol DMZ

South Korea has been working on deploying armed sentry robots along the border with North Korea since at least as far back as 2006, and it looks like it’s still keeping at it. While complete details are a bit light, they country apparently put a pair of new sentry robots in place in the Demilitarized Zone last month, which pack both a machine gun and a grenade launcher to ward off intruders. Those would of course be controlled by humans, but the robots apparently use heat and motion sensors to do all the monitoring on their own, and simply alert a command center if they spots a trespasser. Of course, they are still just in the testing phase, and the military says it’s waiting to see how things work out before it begins a more widespread deployment.

Citrix enlists iPhone 4 in its quest for ‘Nirvana phone’ portable desktop client (video)

Critix has been touting its “Nirvana phone” concept — a handheld device that can be paired with a monitor / keyboard for remote desktop use — for quite some time now. Back in February, the minimum hardware specs were nothing to challenging, and as it turns out, Apple’s iPhone 4 pretty much exceeds ‘em by a long shot. And it has VGA out capabilities and Bluetooth keyboard support. So, you can imagine where this is going. The company is back in what looks like the same depressing cubicle space to show off what looks to be a mature demo of the Receiver 4.0 virtual desktop client on an iDevice, pushing 1024 x 768 resolution and some gesture integration as a mouse replacement. There’s definitely some noticeable lag, but hey, you gotta start somewhere. Video after the break.
