AMD outlines Elite Performance laptop APUs with game-ready Wireless Display

AMD isn’t focusing all its attention on its entry-level mobile APUs today: it’s also providing details for the faster Richland-based models. The new A6, A8, and A10 mobile variants fall under the Elite Performance badge, and theoretically beat Intel to the punch with up to 71 percent faster 3D graphics than the current Core i5 family. They also muster about 7.5 hours of battery life with web use, or about an hour longer than we saw in the previous generation. The roster includes both regular power (35W) and low-voltage (17W to 25W) APUs, in dual- and quad-core editions.

We’re more interested in how well the chips play with other devices and software, however. Besides the face and motion gesture recognition that we’ve seen before, AMD touts a new take on Wireless Display with low enough latency for game sessions, support for 1080p60 video and native Miracast sharing. The Richland upgrade also introduces a new Dock Port standard that can feed both USB 3.0 and up to three external DisplayPort screens through one cable. If you like what AMD is pitching, you won’t have to wait to try it — Elite Performance APUs have already been shipping with MSI’s GX60 and GX70, and other vendors shouldn’t be far behind.

Zynga tries to craft a deeper gambling game with ‘Elite Slots’

While Zynga’s planned foray into real money gambling is still a long way off, the company has been hard at work reinventing slots for the social web. According to an interview with Polygon, its upcoming Elite Slots is trying to tap into social psychology and cognitive neuroscience to give players what they want: a sense of control, progression toward goals, and a social connection. The free-to-play Facebook game adds an RPG element to what would otherwise be a cut and dry spin-to-win mechanic; letting players choose an animal avatar (pictured above) with individual strengths and weaknesses, and “fight” against bosses at the end of each level.

Last night I went to a magical party. There was food, which is always good, and booze, better still, but neither of these integral ingredients played a part in the magic. Nerf’s new N-Strike Elite line of dart blasters did.

The company unveiled the latest in their line of N-Strike blasters, the farthest-shooting toy guns in the company’s entire product portfolio, boasting a 75-foot trajectory. The Elite line includes three separate blasters, the Hail-Fire, the Rampage, and the Retaliator (by the way, is it just me, or are these super angry names?).

We should just start with the Hail-Fire, since it’s the bad mamma jamma of the trio. It features a revolving clip carousel fitting up to eight clips of any size, allowing it to hold up to 144 darts. Of course, it only comes with 24 darts, but you can certainly purchase more if you hate reloading as much as I (or this kid) do. The Hail-Fire can shoot darts up to 75 feet, thanks to a battery-powered motor. This one goes for $ 39.99 and will be available on September 9.

The Rampage also brings a new form-factor to the game, with a 25-dart drum that attaches to the side of the barrel. Rampagers can reload and fire as usual, or hold the trigger and continuously reload for a more rapid-fire approach. It doesn’t quite shoot as far as the Hail-Fire, nor is it as threatening in appearance, but it does win points for being noticeably lighter and more agile in the field. The Rampage is available on August 1 for $ 32.99.

The Retaliator is a sheep that can be dressed in wolves’ clothing. It appears small without the attachable stock, barrel, and drop-down handle locked and in place, but it shoots just as far as the Hail-Fire in any one of its potential configurations. Unfortunately, the little guy only comes with 12 darts, so you’ll almost certainly need to buy an extra pack, but the good news is that the Retaliator is the cheapest of the bunch at $ 26.99, also available August 1.

Sony’s PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset made a splash when it landed last year, but there were two inescapable quirks: a lack of bass and a lack of any wired fallback for your other devices. The brand-new Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset Elite Edition should solve both. Its earcups now carry a new trick, BassImpact, that reportedly delivers the headset’s eponymous pulses and just that bit more punch at low frequencies. We also can’t help but appreciate having a 3.5mm headphone jack (and cable) to plug in an Xperia S or, if you’re daring, a device that goes without Sony’s logo. The noise-cancelling microphones and the overall headset are considerably subtler as part of the remake, to boot. Gamers will have to go without the Pulse-upgraded headset until the fall — not to mention pay a higher price, at $ 150 — but they can get a video overview after the break to bide their time.

We got a look at N-Control’s Avenger Controller Elite just last month, and the company is rounding out the hardware’s May release with a full-court press on GameStop. The retailer’s online store is now selling both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 variants of the controller assist as straightforward, bundle-free $ 50 units. Company creator David Kotkin also tells us that the add-ons have had an extremely warm reception so far: although the Elite lineup had an unsung launch at GameStop on May 29th, it sold out on day one and is still in tight supply, with Xbox 360 examples currently on backorder as we write this. N-Control may have had a tough road in the past several months, but it looks as though that perseverance has paid off.
