Middle Earth’s Rivendell Recreated In 50K LEGO Blocks

lego-rivendell-1.jpg

This is the 50,000+ piece diorama of Lord Of The Ring’s elf haven Rivendell built by LEGOManiacs Blake Baer and Jack Bittner. The 30″ x 40″ piece weighs 120 pounds and took over 600 years to build. Well, that’s just my guesstimate, but I’ve never lost one of those ‘guess how many jelly beans are in the jar’ contests.

Hit the jump for some closeups but be sure to check out Blake’s Flickr if you want to treat your eyeballs to some sexy-ass high-res shots.

Google World Wonders Project takes you to Earth’s treasures in glorious Street View vision (video)

Image

Google has already been taking us to exotic locations through Street View, but now it’s hoping to enshrine the most famous places on Earth through the World Wonders Project, one car (or trike) at a time. A total of 132 sites, ranging from natural landmarks like Yosemite to much more synthetic constructions like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, have both an on-the-ground view as well as 3D renderings, videos and loads of history from UNESCO and the World Monuments Fund, among others. The educational bent is so conspicuous that Google is offering up some of the content in downloadable bundles for schools along with the usual web-based look. All of it promises a much more fascinating, hands-on approach than a dry textbook, and it’s a unique way of bringing encyclopedic knowledge to an era of Chromebooks and the cloud.

Beautiful Earth’s NYC solar powered EV charger follows the sun to Brooklyn Bridge Park

The solar-powered, green and white Beautiful Earth Group EV charging station, which once found its shipping container internals filled with a Mini E, is no longer. Well, it’s no longer where it was, anyway. It’s now somewhere completely different, a place that happens to be just down the road, a land known by many as Brooklyn. It’s Brooklyn Bridge Park, specifically, and Better Earth has donated the thing to the facilities department there. It’ll be used to charge up the service vehicles that patrol the place, apparently including a pair of GEM and Toro Workman EVs that look like they might have been Photoshopped into the promotional picture above. The presumably non-digitally-manipulated ones will all be recharged using the charging station’s 24 solar cells, generating 5.6kW and, ultimately, saving the world. Or, at least, the Park.

What is the name of the robot that checks the hole in Earth’s crust?

I was reading the news the other day (CNN or BBC, don’t remember which) and I read this article about a robot that was going to be sent to investigate a hole in the Earth’s crust. Apparently there was a spot where the crust was completely missing, so the seawater was exposed directly to the outer mantle and formed a special kind of rock. I want to know what the name of the robot was, where the hole was, and what the special kind of rock was called. Can you help? Thanks.
