Boston Dynamics New Robot Is Straight Out Of Your Apocalyptic Nightmares

They call it PETMAN because scientists like to tempt fate. Who knew putting a windbreaker and a gas mask on a robot would instantly turn it from mildly intimidating to most terrifying thing you've ever seen ?

Happy International Creepy Boston Dynamics Robotic Horse Day!

I recognize you guys may have forgotten to obtain your favored robot horse a gift today, but this is International Creepy Robotic Boston Dynamics Robotic Equine Day, and it ’ s vital to get out there and commemorate the magic of the creepy robot equine.

This new Boston Dymanics robot, the Legged Squad Support System, is a new robotic based on Big Dog created to support squads in the field as they roll through opponent zone. This horsey can easily carry 400 pounds of payload and tour 20 miles on one fee. It also follows its human master around without the requirement for outside controls.

The vital thing right here? This monster looks completely untethered, and if I were coming up against a squad helped by a weird robot equine, I ’ d probably run the opposite direction. As it stands, however, these terrifying robot equines deserve our kudos and admiration if just due to the fact that they ’ re so freaking cool.

Two Steps Away From Terminators: Boston Dynamics’ PETMAN Gets An Upgrade, Arms

PETMAN.jpg

BO is right — slap some Old Spice up in them pits!

Seen here looking eerily human, Boston Dynamics’ bipedal humanoid robot PETMAN has been upgraded with arms (capable of pushups!) and a smoother gait. Well thank God! If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s a goofy-walking robot. OMG — did you see PETMAN walking on his toes? What a sped!

Hit the jump for a very worthwhile video of his capabilities.

Boston Dynamics Alpha Dog makes Alyx Vance’s pet look like a toy (video)

Boston Dynamics’ BigDog is one of our favorite insane-level DARPA projects; a robotic pack-mule that can carry 400 pounds of kit for troops. At some point, the Massachusetts mechanics decided the bot would be far better if it was the size of a bull, or, you know, an SUV. The Alpha Dog loses the un-stealthy buzzing noise of its predecessor, has a range of 20 miles and can take much more punishment. If you check out the video after the break, you’ll see two people unsuccessfully attempt a takedown on the monster — Half-Life 2 diehards might experience a combat flashback at the mere sight of it. AT-AT Jr is expected to see field testing sometime next year when it won’t have a test bed of rocks to contend with, but the US Marines. Mark our words: we expect ‘em to appear in every nightmarish dystopia of the 2020s, and take a staring role in the forthcoming Robopocalypse.

Boston Dynamics Cheetah and Atlas robots get DARPA funding, getting ready to find you

Okay, so it may not look quite as impressive as some other mechanical cheetahs

Okay, so it may not look quite as impressive as some other mechanical cheetahs we’ve seen in the past, but this new one from Boston Dynamics certainly has a lot of potential. That robot, plus a new humanoid called Atlas, have won DARPA contracts and so will be put into at least limited production, much like the company’s earlier BigDog. Cheetah is said to run “faster than any existing legged robot and faster than the fastest human runners,” while Atlas can “move through difficult terrain using human-like behavior,” meaning neither running nor hiding will work. That leaves only fighting, so get ready to buck up.

Dynamics’ credit card-based computing platform makes what little money you have more secure (video)

Some folks are trying to replace your credit card with your cellphone, while Dynamics, Inc. is among those trying to make credit cards better. And you know what? We seldom get excited by such things, but this video from the CES New York press preview has us seriously itching to upgrade our plastic. Card 2.0 is the computing platform powering the new Citi cards that re-write the magnetic strip depending on whether you want to spend you cash or your rewards points. The technology fits snugly in your credit card, is waterproof, has a battery life upwards of four years, allows multiple accounts on a single card, and even can be used to require a PIN before displaying the card number. This is some pretty awesome stuff indeed — but don’t take our word for it! Get a peep yourself in the video after the break.
