Fake internet cafes and keyloggers: British intelligence reportedly spied on major world leaders during 2009 G20 summit

Using tactics that included luring diplomats into fake internet cafes, The Guardian reports that British intelligence spied on major world leaders during the 2009 G20 summit in London. The revelation is based on documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden, who fueled earlier leaks about the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the US National Security Agency (NSA) through The Guardian and The Washington Post.
The G20 summit in London included President Obama as well as 20 other heads of state and governing bodies. During the summit, the GCHQ reportedly monitored the foreign politicians’ computers and phone calls, and had direct permission to do so from high-level officials in then-PM Gordon Brown’s administration.

While we’ve learned that radiation levels on Mars are safe for humans, actually getting there in the first place remains a problem. Recent results from Curiosity‘s Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) reveal that exposure even while safely ensconced inside a protected spacecraft is dangerously high. Explorers would be bombarded with 466 milliSieverts of high-energy galactic cosmic rays and solar particles during the 253-day transit and the same coming back, with total levels that could exceed NASA’s career radiation limit for astronauts. “In terms of accumulated dose, it’s like getting a whole-body CT scan once every five or six days,” said Cary Zeitlin, a principal scientist from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) who’s the lead author of the findings. A manned Mars voyage isn’t completely out of the question, but it does mean better shielding is necessary before such a trip — much less a future colony — becomes a reality.

There’s nothing more frustrating than watching a product or service get announced, then having to wait an age to try it out. Nintendo hears that, and has announced via Nintendo Direct, that during E3 week, Best Buy will have playable demos of as-yet released Wii U games in 100 stores across the US and Canada. Given that no one was likely expecting any new hardware from the firm, it’s clear the gaming stalwart is looking for other ways to stir-up some interest. There’s no mention of titles, so we’re left to assume they’d be the games announced at the show. Either way, scratch out that week in June to make sure you find out first hand. This is a video of Jason Do n’tknowhislastname proposing to his greatly pregnant girlfriend Christina Soontobedo n’tknowhislastname with an engagement ring flown in on a quadrocopter. All of it takes location in Alamo Square Park (aka the park from the Capacity opening credits) in San Francisco. Admittedly the time getting at the proposal is pretty sweet, I simply do not understand how the quadrocopter fits in. It simply appears to be one of those, “Just due to the fact that you can” kind of circumstances. That would be like me asking my girlfriend if she ‘d mind making me a sandwich and then having a ring poking out the top of the peanut butter which is actually an excellent idea although nothing like this quadrocopter one and probably exactly what I’m visiting do and you better not take it initially. \* pounding table \* You hear me ?! EE sees contract activations fall during its first quarter with LTE

When EE activated its LTE network part-way through its fourth-quarter, there was an assumption speed-hungry Brits would storm the company’s numerous stores to get at that super-fast mobile data. The reality, however, seems to indicate that it takes more than a Kevin Bacon commercial to send the homeland into a frenzy. The company’s financial results show that the network only added 201,000 customers between October and December 31st — 49,000 fewer than in Q3 and 112,000 fewer than signed up in the same period in 2011. EE also isn’t breaking out figures for how many of its existing customers made the change — so for now we’ll have to assume that the UK isn’t as sweet on the guy from Footloose as Olaf Swanee had hoped.

Australian firefighters test data-transmitting pills to monitor biometrics during work

A new swallowable pill has been trialled with 50 firefighters in Australia, aimed at monitoring body temperatures and other vital readings when working under extreme conditions. Using Equivital’s EQ02 LifeMonitor capsule, the pill transmits metrics to a device housed on the chest. This then sends data on skin temperature, heart rate and respiration rate to an external computer. If a firefighter’s core body temperature is increasing too quickly, they can then be moved from the frontline to a recovery area, hopefully reducing accidents and deaths caused by heat exhaustion.
Until now, the standard method involved measuring body temperatures through the ear, but this new method — which was also used to monitor Felix Baumgartner’s 23-mile drop to Earth — offers a faster, more effective way of monitoring multiple vital signs. Research has so far focused on monitoring a firefighters’ core temperature when they’ve been exposed to temperatures between from -3 to 124 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes, but according to News.com.au, testing will continue on the Equivital capsules, with temperatures likely to go as high as 600 degrees Celsius — about 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit. We’re just hoping that electrical firewands are next on the list.

WARNING: IT’S HARD TO WATCH THAT POOR BASTARD GETTING BEAT AGAINST THE PLANE DURING FLIGHT, I RECOMMEND NOT WATCHING THE VIDEO UNLESS YOU’RE ADAM OR EVE AND HAVE A SERIOUS THING AGAINST SNAKES.
This is a video of a 3-meter python trying to fly without paying from Australia to Papua New Guinea aboard a Qantas Airlines flight. Things didn’t work out too hot for him. And not just because there was no beverage service either.
The snake–an Amethystine python–didn’t survive the hard trip, killed either by the 248mph wind (400km/h) or the 10.4F (-12C) temperatures. When the plane arrived to its destination, the snake was still hanging from the wing, already dead.
Aw man, that sucks. My only hope is that he’d always dreamed of flying like a bird and died fulfilling that life-long fantasy. “Get real, GW.” I WAS TRYING TO BE POSITIVE. He died f***ing cold and alone, you happy? “Let’s go with the bird thing.” Well it’s too late now!

AMD plans to sell 58-acre Austin campus and lease back space to raise cash during hard times

It’s not unusual in the least that AMD is in difficulty, but if any type of questions remained, this week’s news that the chipmaker will sell its Austin, Texas campus and lease it back to raise cash must be a clear indication. According to the Austin American-Statesman, AMD is in the planning stages of making an offer that would see its large 58-acre Lone Star Campus– opened in 2008– offered for an expected $ 150 to $ 200 million. The company would then sign a bargain to lease back the space, which it developed for an approximated $ 270 million, for 12 to 15 years, liquidizing a few of its real property possessions and contributing to its dwindling reserves of money.
Such a deal was formerly reported by Sterne Agee expert Vijay Rakesh, and AMD spokesperson Drew Prairie t.
