Microsoft’s Andy Lees exits corporate development role, will announce a new job after his holiday
Seven months after Andy Lees became Microsoft’s vice president of corporate development, the executive has decided that it’s time for a rest. AllThingsD is reporting that the deposed former Windows Phone chief is taking a sabbatical to spend some time with his family in England, but will return to a new, currently undefined, role at Redmond later in the summer. Given that the country is currently suffering through one of its traditional summers, we suggest Mr. Lees packs an umbrella.

Bringing Back “Arrested Development” Might Ruin It
There’s a very good chance that the internet’s favorite show might go the way of “The Harlem Shake” or planking.

Without too much effort, you can find Arrested Development GIFs and pictures organized into almost every conceivable order and theme you can think of.
The first DVDs of Arrested Development shipped to homes in the fall of 2004. By the end of 2006, DVDs of the original three season run had been distributed to fans all over the world. After the show’s cancellation, those DVDs were especially important — they were the only tools fans had to fuel a fanatic screencap culture driven by a sense that with enough enthusiasm and devotion, they could will their little critically-acclaimed TV show back to life.
Google Trends data for “Arrested Development” shows a peak in online interest when the show was cancelled in 2006, as fans flocked to blogs and messageboards to commiserate.

That two-year period between 2004 and 2006 is an interesting one in terms of online culture. Myspace was still a few years off from becoming a dominant social network, hitting peak user numbers in 2008, and Facebook wasn’t yet a force for sharing. Facebook wasn't even available to people who didn't have a college email until the end of 2006.
Instead, an unregulated meme culture was growing at an exponential rate. Messageboard users were sharing early versions of what we now classify as “viral content.” That usually meant usually weird songs, clunky flash cartoons, terrible GIFs and more than anything, silly images.

Thalmic Labs Shows Off MYO Development Process, Demos The Armband Controlling Tetris And A Sphero

Waterloo-based Thalmic Labs is working on getting the MYO armband into the waiting arms of pre-order customers, which now number well above the 25,000 announced in March, Thalmic told me, making up over $ 4 million in total sales to date. MYO is a unique control device worn around the forearm, which measures muscle movement and electrical impulses and translates those into a control mechanism for various devies over Bluetooth.
This new video by Thalmic is a solid explainer for those curious about the engineering that goes into the MYO, and acts as a sort of general FAQ about how it works and what’s going on in terms of ongoing third-party development from the community MYO is trying to build. MYO’s official dev program is slated to come online in the coming months, and will include early access to hardware.
The new video is more about what’s going on within the company as Thalmic continues to build momentum ahead of its targeted ship date of sometime late in 2013, but the Sphero cameo is cool enough to make me slightly giddy. In case you didn’t know, the Sphero is the best dog toy ever created, and the MYO looks like it’ll make it even better in that regard.
On the business side of things, Thalmic passing the $ 4 million pre-order mark means that it has added over $ 300,000 in pre-sales since April 11, so over the course of just two weeks.

Disney halts game development at LucasArts, moves to licensed Star Wars titles
If you’re old enough to have played PC games for more than a decade, LucasArts (originally LucasFilm Games) likely has a permanent place in your heart after a string of legendary adventure and flight combat releases. You’ll unfortunately have to put the company as you knew it squarely in the past — Lucasfilm’s new owner, Disney, is ending internal development at LucasArts. The software house is shifting to a licensing model for Star Wars games, reportedly “minimizing the company’s risk” while expanding the range of games on offer. There’s a chance that in-progress titles like Star Wars 1313 will survive with outside help, according to a spokesperson in touch with GameInformer, but talk of layoffs from Kotaku dampens any chances for direct follow-ups to favorites like Grim Fandango. We won’t mourn too much when personas like Ron Gilbert, Lawrence Holland and Tim Schafer have long since moved on to other companies — still, it’s unquestionably the end of an era for game and movie fans alike.
