Dell unveils Haswell-powered laptops and desktops for professionals (video)

Between the launch of Intel’s fourth generation core Haswell and Computex, June’s shaping up to be a big month for the PC industry. Fresh from letting us play with its new folding hybrid, Dell is whipping out new OptiPlex 9020 and XE2 desktops, an OptiPlex All-In-One and the Latitude E6540 business laptop. Given that they’re Dell machines, customization options will be limitless when they arrive in the forthcoming weeks, backed by all of those enterprise-friendly vPro, WYSE and Cloud management services that Dell’s attempting to become famous for.

Windows 7 hits 630 million licenses sold, now running on 50 percent of enterprise desktops

Microsoft’s Windows 7 momentum shows no sign of slowing down despite the upcoming Windows 8 release in late October. The company revealed today that it has now sold over 630 million licenses of Windows 7, up 30 million from the previous figures released a month ago. Microsoft’s Tami Reller revealed the stats during a keynote appearance at the company’s Worldwide Partner Conference today in Canada.
Reller also revealed that 50 percent of enterprise desktops are now running Windows 7, admitting that most upgrades are from the aging Windows XP operating system. In comparison, Apple announced last month at it had shipped 26 million copies of OS X Lion, 40 percent of the total Mac install base of 66 million. As Microsoft looks to Windows 8…

Round Rock just rolled out some new consumer machines this week, so it comes as no surprise that it’s doling out some fresh computing goodies to the enterprise as well. First up is the new Dell Latitude E series laptops that come with a variety of ports for your connecting pleasure: one eSATA/USB combo, two USB 3.0 ports, a serial connector, 3.5mm headphone jack, plus HDMI and Gigabit ethernet. All those sockets come embedded in a chassis made of magnesium alloy that’s been powder-coated on the bottom, giving it a lightweight, yet sturdy look and feel. In keeping with the tough-but-light theme, the top of these Latitudes are sheathed in aluminum, and the hinges are made of steel. Additionally, though it’s a new machine, it’s backwards compatible with many previous-gen Latitude docks and batteries

Maingear reveals more heat-dissipating desktops, keeps those new Ivy Bridge internals cool

Maingear gave us a quick nudge to say something was coming. Now it can reveal that — alongside Intel’s third-generation processors inside all of its desktops and laptops — it’s further updated two of its tower models. The F131 ($ 1,049), the middleweight option, now houses the same vertical heat-dissipating design found on Maingear’s Shift model, alongside hot-swappable storage. It’s followed by the Potenza ($ 899), the company’s “mini-ITX gaming solution.” It’s 45 percent smaller than the F131 with the same heat dissipation design, but still capable of squeezing in NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 680 and support for a liquid cooling setup on the side. Phew. So pick your size, pick your processor and hit up the source for all the custom desktop options.

Creative types working their magic on Windows may already be familiar with KillerKeys, a desktop app that brings push-button control to most Adobe apps, Microsoft Office, Sony Vegas and a few others, letting you tap a preset action rather than digging through a multi-layer menu or remembering hundreds of keyboard shortcuts — if you use any of these apps as part of your workflow, the $ 10 (and up) investment certainly seems to be worthwhile. Now, Bella, the company behind KillerKeys, is bringing the tool to iOS (the iPad, more specifically), letting you tap your intentions on your tab, rather than using the mouse to click around the desktop.
You can group buttons by function, and the panel adjusts automatically to match the current app — there’s also an application launcher available at the bottom corners of the display, which helps to minimize your mouse time. To that end, you’ll also find an on-screen trackpad (which unfortunately wasn’t functional during the company’s demo at NAB), and once it’s enabled you’ll be able to reposition your pointer from the tablet, letting you hide that cumbersome mouse. Initially, the app will only be available for iOS when it ships next month, though an Android version is in the works, as is a Mac OS version of KillerKeys, which should launch with the iPad app. The mobile application will set you back $ 10, and you’ll also need to pick up a copy of KillerKeys, which ranges in price from $ 10 for a home and student addition to $ 90 for the whole shebang.
