Hands-on with the iConsole.tv, an Android-powered game system with the heart of a desktop PC

Pry open any Android-powered game console on the market today, and you’ll likely find a mobile processor — an ARM-based chip originally designed for tablets, smartphones and maybe the odd specialty device. It seems to make sense — after all, isn’t Android a mobile OS? Christopher Price, CEO of Mobile Media Ventures, doesn’t seem to think so. “Android is the future of personal computing,” Price told Engadget. “Even on the desktop.” According to Price, developers just haven’t had a chance to play with a truly powerful Android gaming machine. So naturally, he’s building one.
Despite its Apple-esque name, the iConsole.tv claims to be the most powerful Android device to date. It’s a bold claim, but the specs add up: the company’s Unit 00 developer kit runs Android on a 3.3GHz Intel Ivy Bridge CPU, 8GB of DDR3 RAM and two 500GB hard drives. Graphics are handled by Intel’s integrated HD 4000 chipset — a surprisingly capable GPU, though still a far cry from dedicated hardware. Price stressed that these specifications are for the $ 999 developer version the company announced today. The final product’s build hasn’t been finalized. Still, with all that power, we had to wonder why MMV chose Android. Price reiterated the potential he sees in the platform. “We’re pushing the envelope and adapting it for high-performance gaming, but we see Android being the change agent in personal computing, on the TV and the desktop. People hate walled gardens, and they hate maintaining their PCs. Android can solve that, and we’re going to help make that happen.”

Sure, you could see and manage your Google Drive files from within the comfort of your PC / Mac file management system, but you couldn’t publicly share them with friends — until now. Google Drive files are now sharable via right click directly on your desktop, meaning the Drive desktop app now has one more feature that Dropbox already had several years ago. We hope you’ll forgive our lack of enthusiasm for Google’s catchup effort, but it’s hard to get all jazzed up about functionality that should’ve probably been there at launch. Anyway, if you’re not seeing the new feature pop up on your dashboard yet, Google says it’s “rolling out over the next few days.” Hold tight!

Acer’s Aspire R7 combines desktop, laptop, and tablet with one ‘floating touchscreen’ (hands-on)

After teasing it in a strange, Star Trek-infused commercial, Acer has finally revealed its mysterious transforming device. At an event at Milk Studios in New York City, the company has announced the Aspire R7. It has a (beautiful) 15.6-inch, 1080p touchscreen and it’s powered by an ultra-low voltage Intel Core i5 processor. While we know the specs, we’re not sure what to call it, honestly — it’s technically a laptop, but thanks to Acer’s new “Ezel” hinge the device sounds (and looks) an awful lot like both a tablet and a desktop computer. Maybe, as Acer calls it, it’s “the notebook designed for touch.” It’s certainly unlike any laptop we’ve seen before.

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from James, who wants to break into audio mixing, but needs some noisyboxes for his desk. If you’re looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
I’m no audiophile, but I would like some decent quality sound for my desktop. I’ve tried 4.1, 2.1, 2.0 setups but none of them made me very happy, which isn’t helping my attempts to get into professional audio work. Is there a lower-end line of speakers that the pros use that I’d be able to afford?
Fortunately for you, James, we can turn this question over to our podcast producer, who suggested that you could do worse than a pair of KRK RP6G2 Rockit speakers, which come in at $ 400 for a pair. They’re studio monitors rather than purely desktop speakers, but if you want to start working in audio then you’re probably better off with these. Of course, it wouldn’t be Ask Engadget unless we turned this question over to our clever crew of commenters, so if you know of anything that’s better (or cheaper) then fire your answer into the comments below.

Microsoft launched its new Skype Video Messages feature for iOS, Android, and Mac back in February, but the company didn’t make it available initially for its own Windows platform. Today, Microsoft is releasing a preview of Skype Video Messaging for Windows desktop users. The traditional desktop app that runs on Windows 7 and Windows 8 will include the new feature, allowing users to trade short video messages (up to three minutes long) with other Skype members.
The feature is still not available on Microsoft’s Windows 8 Skype app, but the company is promising to make this available “shortly.” Skype says it’s still testing the feature, and at the moment you get 20 free messages before you have to subscribe to Skype Premium for $ 4.99 a…

When Acer sent out a press release last week trumpeting a Star Trek: Into Darkness co-branded ad campaign for its Windows 8 notebooks, there didn’t seem to be anything of note (other than a misguided marketing pitch). However, an advertisement released today teases one of the more unique notebook designs we’ve seen. The nameless product, which is sillily integrated into a scene from the upcoming Star Trek film, looks like a laptop that can transform into a desktop. A sliding hinge on the display lid allows the screen to be adjusted vertically, and the final result looks a bit like an all-in-one desktop.
