Designer Builds 3D-Printed Headphones That Use No Manufactured Parts

If the whole of human knowledge were to be wiped out tomorrow, how would you recreate the consumer electronics industry so you can jam out to some rockin’ tunes? Why you’d build these unique 3D-printed headphones. Except for some twists of wire, these cans consist of thin pieces of printed plastic and the speakers are actually plastic with a coil of copper wire embedded, by hand, into a set of tiny traces. Even the audio plug which consists of wire wrapped around a small plastic spindle.
You can download the project here and print it yourself or marvel at how the creator, designer J.C. Karich was able to use wire and plastic to build a pair of cans that actually work. He obviously had to source the wire and magnets (although, arguably, he could have dug the ore himself, right?) but the rest of the project is completely hand-designed and printed on the fly, an increasingly common feat with today’s 3D printers.
The audio quality looks surprisingly good, all things considered, and the design is ingeniously primitive. Writes Karich:
Sadly no one has reported actually being able to build these things yet on Thingiverse but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. Who knows? Maybe this is the future: artisanal headphones.

Firefox OS To Make Hardware Launching With Keon And Peak Designer Examine Smartphones
Mozilla ’ s Firefox OS, the mobile operating system from the business that makes the Firefox internet browser build entirely on open web requirements, will have its initial hardware quickly thanks to developer examine smartphone gadgets, produced by Spanish open hardware phone platform maker Geeksphone, in partnership with Telefonica. Two models, the Peak and the Keon, will provide developers various hardware profiles to establish for, covering both higher-end and more economical devices.
The Keon features a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM, 3G HSPA network connection, a 3.5-inch display, 3 MP rear camera and 4GB of onboard storage space. It has a MicroSD slot, and a 1580 mAh battery. It seems very low-specced, however that ’ s likely by design– the Keon is just designer hardware after all, but it also sets a profile for a gadget that could easily appeal to a developing market.
The Peak on the other hand has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, also flaunts 3G HSPA wireless radios, however includes a 4.3-inch screen, an 8 MP rear camera and a 2 MP front shooter. It ’ s still only got 512MB of RAM under the hood and 4GB of onboard storage, nonetheless, however there ’ s a MicroSD slot for storage space growth, and a beefier 1800 mAh battery to take care of the added specifications.
Mozilla hasn ’ t revealed availability of the gadgets yet, or how they will be distributed, however it has announced Firefox OS App Days, which will take place today and permit designers to come together to learn Firefox OS, hack and develop app s for the platform. No word on if this hardware might make an appearance at those occasions.
The Firefox phones are certainly adorable, if a little weak in the specifications department. I ’ m ready to wager that these will become highly sought-after items in the tech community, specifications or no. I know I currently desire one of each.

Bauer says he proposed a subtle design element on the Startscreen background and illustrations for the Lockscreen.
A series of early concepts show how the design progressed into the Lockscreen that is used on millions of Windows 8 PCs today — a composition that captures the nature and architecture in Seattle and Microsoft’s campus. “We got really inspired by the beautiful nature and iconic architecture of…

Designer builds functioning radio with London tube map circuit board

The popular design of the London Underground map was very first become pregnant in the 1930s by engineering draftsman Harry Beck, who based his concept around the quality and simplicity of electrical schematics– now, Japanese designer Yuri Suzuki has taken the principle full circle, creating a working radio making use of television map as a circuit board. Presently on display at London’s Design Gallery, the printed circuit board (PCB) covers the full length and breadth of the city’s present-day transport network, utilizing strategically put resistors, capacitors and other electrical parts to use the interconnections in the system.
” I think the PCB is a remarkable innovation,” says Suzuki in an explanatory video clip. “Due to the process and effectiveness of …
