The Last of Us will debut ‘play while it downloads’ feature on the PS3

Even though we don’t yet know what the PlayStation 4 looks like or how much it will cost, one of the many details revealed at Sony’s February event was that games will be playable even as they download. Now it turns out we won’t have to wait for the new hardware to experience that feature on a console — Steam, for example, does this on PCs with some games — as The Last of Us leaders Bruce Straley and Neil Druckman told Game Informer the PS3 game will be available as a download the same day it arrives on discs, and is playable once the transfer is 50 percent complete. There’s no word whether other developers will have access to the “magic” Naughty Dog worked out with Sony to make it happen, but as least there will be as little delay as possible before you begin exploring its post-apocalyptic landscape June 14th.

First ‘Ender’s Game’ footage revealed, teaser to debut in Google+ Hangout on May 7th

The big-screen adaptation of Ender’s Game isn’t scheduled to land in theaters until November, but we’re already getting our first glimpse at some footage from the film — and the official teaser trailer is just around the corner. On May 7th, the film’s teaser will be unveiled during a live Google+ Hangout, accompanied by a conversation with three of the film’s key creative elements: director Gavin Hood, star Asa Butterfield, and producer Bob Orci (whose credits include Alias, Fringe, and Star Trek Into Darkness).
In the meantime, a brief spot announcing the event features our first look at footage from the film — including appearances from Harrison Ford and Sir Ben Kingsley. The Google+ Hangout itself will be taking place on Tuesday…

The $99 OUYA Console Will Make Its Retail Debut In The US, UK And Canada On June 4

Didn’t get a chance to back the ambitious OUYA Android game console to lock in your pre-order? Considering how much press the thing has gotten, you don’t have much excuse for missing that particular window, but never fear — OUYA intends to sell the $ 99 pint-sized gaming gadget through retail partners like Amazon, Gamestop, and Best Buy starting on June 4.
The folks at Engadget obtained the full press release, which goes on to note that Android gamers in the U.K. and Canada would be able to pick up an OUYA that same day. Of course by then most (if not all) of the people who shelled out money when the project was in its early stages will have already received their devices. The Verge points out that OUYA began passing shipping notifications to its users earlier today.
While the hardware inches ever closer to its mass-market release, there’s still a question of content to contend with. OUYA hasn’t provided much insight on how many game submissions it’s received since it began accepting them a few weeks back, though quite a few developers have already thrown their weight behind the little console that could.
Of course, there’s a tendency for some gamers to cling to proven hits from years gone by, which is why it comes as no surprise to see some developers taking up the task of making the OUYA a first-rate emulation device. It was revealed earlier this week that NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 emulators would be available in OUYA’s storefront at launch. And emulator developer Robert Broglia confirmed yesterday that he plans to bring his existing Android emulators for consoles like the TurboGrafx-16 and Sega Saturn (!) to the OUYA before too long.
The OUYA’s journey from kooky idea to full-fledged product has been a long one, and it’s not over yet. Getting the device onto store shelves is certainly a milestone for the young company, but the true test lays in how run-of-the-mill consumers will react to it. Granted, its price point may give it a leg up on more prominent rivals like the Xbox 360, Wii U, or PlayStation 3, but we’ll soon see if the gamers of the world wind up warming to it.

The First Ubuntu Smartphones Will Debut In October

It has a MicroSD slot, and a 1580 mAh battery. It seems pretty low-specced, but that’s likely by design – the Keon is just developer hardware after all, but it also sets a profile for a device that can easily appeal to a developing market.
The Peak on the other hand has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.2GHz dual-core processor, also boasts 3G HSPA wireless radios, but adds a 4.3-inch screen, an 8 MP rear camera and a 2 MP front shooter. It’s still only got 512MB of RAM under the hood and 4GB of onboard storage, however, but there’s a MicroSD slot for storage expansion, and a beefier 1800 mAh battery to handle the extra specs.
Mozilla hasn’t announced availability of the devices yet, or how they will be distributed, but it has announced Firefox OS App Days, which will take place this week and allow developers to come together to learn Firefox OS, hack and create app s for the platform. No word on if this hardware might make an appearance at those events.
The Firefox phones are definitely adorable, if a little weak in the specs department. I’m willing to bet that these will become highly sought-after items in the tech community, specs or no. I know I already want one of each.

Despite a strong showing of slates in 2012, ASUS showed precious few tablets at CES last week. Missing from the show? Its latest MeMo Pad — a 7-inch 1024 x 600 tablet rocking Jelly Bean, 16GB of storage, a Mali 400 GPU, 1GB of RAM and a 1MP front-facing camera. ASUS didn’t name the tablet by model number, but it’s a dead ringer for the ME172V that slipped through GLBenchmarks last month, and fits the bill of a recent federal authorization. The new slab isn’t quite as nice as the Nexus 7 its predecessor became, but at $ 150, it’s a little easier on the wallet. ASUS also cautions buyers that the MeMo pad is a “tablet-only product,” clarifying that it won’t be getting a Transformer Pad-like keyboard dock — assuming you could type on a 7-inch keyboard, that is.
