Resident Evil – Umbrella Corporation
It is a major international player in a number of markets including pharmaceuticals, medical hardware, defense, and computers along with more clandestine operations utilizing genetic engineering and bio weapons. The company also has a more public face, producing cosmetics and consumer products. One of Umbrella’s subsidiaries is a private military contractor with a highly-trained security force capable of rescue, reconnaissance, and para-military operations. The corporation uses the force to secure and protect its assets and high profile employees. Birkin and Wesker used this as a diversion for their own plans to leave Umbrella, taking their research with them. Wesker, having formed Raccoon Police Department’s (RPD) elite STARS two years earlier, would develop a plan to lure the unit to the Arklay Research Facility to obtain battle data from the conflict that would follow with the STARS members and various Bio-Organic Weapons (BOWs). Of the two STARS teams, the first to be deployed was Bravo Team, and it was Bravo Team’s Rebecca Chambers’ and Billy Coen’s intervention that eventually stopped Marcus’ plans for revenge within the Arklay Training Facility, resulting in the facility’s destruction. Umbrella’s fortunes failed to improve after the Raccoon City incident. The US government was forced to take extreme measures to ensure the spread of the T-Virus was stopped. “Mission: Code XX” was approved, and Raccoon City was annihilated by a missile strike Shortly afterwards …

Amar Bose donates majority of Bose Corporation shares to MIT, says thanks for the education

If you haven’t heard of Dr. Amar Bose directly, you’ve surely heard of his eponymous audio equipment company. Late last week, the 81-year old founder and chairman of Bose Corporation announced that he’s donating the majority of shares in the privately held company to his alma mater, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A member of that college’s graduating class of 1951 and its electrical engineering faculty all the way until 2001, Bose felt compelled to give something back and he’s opted for the most grandiose of gestures. MIT won’t be able to sell its shares in Bose Corp. nor have any say in the way it is run, but it’ll receive dividends as and when they’re paid out, which will then be reinvested in its research and education programs. In making this perpetual endowment public, Amar Bose took the time to credit Professors Y. W. Lee, Norbert Wiener and Jerome Wiesner as his mentors — in the image above, you can see him pictured with Lee (left) and Wiener (right) back in 1955. Chalkboards, that’s where it all began.

Unity Corporation releases Xtion Pro PC motion sensor in Japan

We’re still waiting for some specific US launch details for the Xtion Pro and Wavi Xtion motion sensors that ASUS showed off at CES earlier this year, but it looks like folks in Japan can now already get their hands on half of that duo. Unity Corportation has just announced that it’s releasing the Xtion Promotion sensor (complete with an SDK) in the country for ¥19,980, or roughly $ 240. That should work similarly to a Kinect considering that PrimeSense is responsible for much of the technology behind it, although you should be aware that this one is aimed squarely at developers looking to created their own games and applications for it. You’ll have to wait for the more consumer-friendly Wavi Xtion for something that you can simply plop down in your living room.

Google calls Oracle Android lawsuit ‘baseless,’ says Java goes ‘beyond any one corporation’

Oracle’s decision to sue Google for infringing its patents and copyright on Java in Android has certainly stirred up a hornets’ nest of commentary and analysis on the web today, but it’s only just now that we’ve received Google’s official statement, in which the search giant calls the suit “baseless” and vows to “defend open-source standards.” Them’s fightin’ words — and considering the Dalvik virtual machine at the heart of the Android OS is the centerpiece of this dispute, we wouldn’t expect either side to back down quietly here. Get ready for years of litigation, friends. Here’s Google’s full statement:
We are disappointed Oracle has chosen to attack both Google and the open-source Java community with this baseless lawsuit. The open-source Java community goes beyond any one corporation and works every day to make the web a better place. We will strongly defend open-source standards and will continue to work with the industry to develop the Android platform.

Apple has been through some extreme ups and downs, but today the corporation climbed to an all-time high. Apple surpassed longtime rival Microsoft in market capitalization, making the Cupertino, California, company the most valuable technology company in the world, for the moment, at least.
The milestone is even more remarkable given Apple’s single-digit share of the computer market. Microsoft, by contrast, runs on about 90 percent of the world’s PCs.
Steve Jobs should feel vindicated. After being fired from his own company in the 1980s, the company gradually became less and less relevant, its market share dwindling and its innovative edge dulled.
Now, over a decade after his return as Apple CEO, Jobs — once viewed as an opportunistic entrepreneur who would never have the chops to run a really big company — is the king of the tech industry.
From the first iMac to the revolutionary iPad, what follows is a list of key turning points that took Apple from an also-ran into a champion.

Jobs Returns, 1996
A nearly bankrupt Apple Computer welcomed back its ousted founder Jobs in 1996. Apple purchased Jobs’ startup, NeXT, to help build a new, Unix-based operating system — but the real prize was Jobs himself. A year later, Jobs replaced Gil Amelio as CEO to retake the helm. With the help of some financial backing from rival Bill Gates, the return of Jobs marked the beginning of Apple’s gradual recovery.
