Nintendo reportedly offering Wii U game conversion software to smartphone app devs

While we knew Nintendo was happy to hook-up its newest consoles to your smartphone, we thought that was only going to extend to social networking and shopping. Nope, it looks like the company is going a step further, with a report from Japan Times suggesting that the games maker is offering high-level conversion software to app developers “so they can produce smartphone games that can be played on Wii U.” A weak existing games library has been cited to as one of the main causes of Nintendo’s recent financial woes and it’s hoping that the addition of some popular titles will offer enough of a reason to invest in a dedicated games machine. We just hope it’s able to glean some fresh gaming gems — the first Angry Birds title launched in 2009.

In a press event panel that included almost every big studio executive — sans Disney — Walmart announced an exclusive in-store disc to digital conversion service. Starting April 16th, in more than 3,500 stores, you’ll be able to bring your DVD or Blu-ray discs in and have ‘em added to your Vudu movie collection. The privilege of watching movies, you already bought, online via Vudu will cost you $ 2, but if you own the DVD, it’ll cost you $ 5 to upgrade your digital copy to HD. In addition, you can now buy UltraViolet movies via Vudu and watch them via other UV supported sources — we assume this is a two-way street, but it isn’t spelled out that way in the press release (after the break). This is easily the biggest news for the, now beta badged, UltraViolet service but most of our complaints persist until there’s single-sign on and the standard downloadable CFF (common file format) is a reality.

nanox: High-Quality iPod nano Watch Conversion Kit

Made from aircraft-grade anodized aluminum, the nanox is available in the seven colors Apple offers the iPod nano itself in. The kit, which doesn’t require using tools or screws, comes with 2mm thin straps made of 100% silicone and an anti-glare sheet for the nano display.
Maker emonster says the nanox is produced at the same factory as other Apple devices (it’s made of the same aluminum 6061 alloy Apple uses for its products). The kit was designed by acclaimed Japanese designer Noriaki Miyata.
And quality has its price: the nanox costs US$ 125.99 in the US Amazon store (£79.99 in the UK, Yen 9,800 in Japan).

The biggest hindrance to consumer adoption of 3D technology thus far has been a lack of content, and price, of course. While I can’t vouch for their price tags quite yet, it would seem that Stream TV Networks has come up with some new 3D technology that could make that whole limited content thing much less of an issue.
How, you ask? Well, for one thing the new Ultra-D tech converts 2D content to 3D. But it gets better. Not only will that content be brought over to the third dimension, but you won’t have to wear any clunky glasses to enjoy it. Ultra-D technology also converts 3D content to autostereoscopic (sans glasses) 3D. It also works with just about any format, from Blu-rays and DVDs to PC games to cable and satellite content, and all the conversion is done in real time.
Stream TV Networks, under the Ultra-D brand, has 3D-capable products coming out for TVs, converter boxes, tabs, PCs of all shapes and sizes, smartphones, and even digital signage and picture frames. The technology also allows for the user to customize the 3D effect, letting users increase or decrease the real-time 3D rendering effect.
Products will be announced at CES, and we’ll be there to keep you in the loop. ‘Til then, pop on those glasses.

Sharp Reaches Record Conversion Efficiency With New Solar Cell

Solar energy has just made one step forward: Sharp announced that it has developed a solar cell boasting the world’s highest conversion efficiency of 36.9%. This number is 1.1 points higher than for the company’s last cell, which was unveiled in October 2009.
The new 1cm2 solar cell consists of three layers made of indium gallium phosphide, gallium arsenide and indium gallium arsenide (see below). Sharp says it was able to increase the conversion efficiency by using new materials and reducing the resistance of the junctions connecting the layers.
The plans now is to commercialize the solar cell in 2014 for use in “space satellites and for flight craft and land vehicles”.
