Valve experiments with players’ sweat response, eye-tracking controls for future game design
Valve has a surprisingly varied staff roster. Mike Ambinder is the company’s very own experimental psychologist and he’s been outlining some of Valve’s work with biofeedback technology, including eye-motion controls for Portal 2 and perspiration-based gaming adjustments on Left 4 Dead. Mentioning these developments at the NeuroGaming Conference last week, Ambinder notes that both are still at an experimental stage, but that “there is potential on both sides of the equation, both for using physiological signals to quantify an emotion [and] what you can do when you incorporate physiological signals into the gameplay itself.”
In Left 4 Dead, test subjects had their sweat monitored, with values assigned to how much they were responding to the action. This data was fed back into the game, where designers attempted to modify (and improve) the experience. In a test where players had four minutes to shoot 100 enemies, calmer participants would progress normally, but if they got nervous, the game would speed up and they would have less time to shoot. When it came to the eye-tracking iteration of Portal 2, the new controls apparently worked well, but also necessitated separating aiming and viewpoint to ensure it worked. With Valve already involving itself in wearable computing, it should make both notions easier to accomplish if it decides to bring either experiment to fans. Venture Beat managed to record Ambinder’s opening address at the conference — we’ve added it after the break.

NASA JPL controls rover with Leap Motion, shows faith in consumer hardware (video)
If you think utilizing the Leap Movement controller for playing air guitar and keying in without a key-board was cool, try utilizing it to control a NASA rover. Victor Luo and Jeff Norris from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory got on stage at the Game Developers Conference here in San Francisco to do simply that with the SPORTSMEN (All-Terrain Hex-Limbed Extra-Terrestrial Explorer), which was located 383 miles away in Pasadena. As Luo waved his turn over the sensor, the robotic relocated kind, reacting to the subtle movements of his fingers and wrists, wowing the crowd that viewed it over a projected Google+ Hangout.
We talked to Luo and Norris after the panel to gain more understanding into the task. As Luo explains, among JPL’s major objectives is to develop tools to control robotics required for area expedition. Viewing as the gaming sector is already rife with user-friendly controllers ripe for the plucking, it made good sense to harness them for the job. “We’re really made use of to the blood loss edge,” he said. “From the Kinect to the PlayStation Relocate, they stand for major financial investments into use.” Struck the jump for our impressions of the simulation software, a look at JPL’s grander goal and for video clips of the trial and panel itself.

Sensus Case Adds Back And Side Touch Controls To The iPhone
The Sensus Case is at CES 2013, and it brings touch controls to the iPhone that go way beyond the screen. Touch-sensitive panels on the back (which can detect 10 points of input at once) and sides of the case give it additional capabilities for gaming and apps, akin to what Sony has down with the back panel of the PlayStation Vita mobile console.
The Sensus is made by Minnesota based hardware company Canopy, which wanted to bring something genuinely new to the world of iPhone apps. In hands-on testing, the prototype was amazingly responsive and accurate – and immediately, you get the sense of how the thing can work with not only games, but also with any apps that require menus. The side sliders can act as scrolling mechanisms for quickly paging through options and menus, making it much easier to navigate a number of settings on the fly.
For gaming, the Sensus’ back panel takes away the pain of having your fingers block a big section of the screen. Plus, it can be used to do different things than the front panel. Of course, to use either, you need an app or game that has it integrated via an API. But Canopy reps said that it’s easy for developers to get on board, and in fact it takes only minutes to get it up and running in the most basic way possible.
The Sensus Case is planned for release summer 2013, and should retail for under $ 100. The Canopy rep said that the idea is to make sure it’s available for less than a premium case without the touch sensitive features. Another thing the company is really excited about is the potential for what it can do to enable better app controls for users with visual impairments. There’s no question the Sensus is impressive, but what developers ultimately do with it will be what proves its long-term worth.

Orange Including Motion Controls To New Livebox Play TELEVISION Set-Top Box Beginning In February, Thanks To Movea
Motion control, since you were introduced in a fairly usable and broadly available type with the Wii Remote, the general public has had a bit of a crush on you. Lately, that crush has actually developed into a full-fledged infatuation, and now Orange is bringing motion control to its Livebox Play TELEVISION service in France via Movea ’ s gesture-based tech and a motion-sensitive remote.
Microsoft ’ s Kinect showed their was a broad hunger for the use of motion controls incorporated with home enjoyment systems, and Orange ’ s choice to tap Movea ’ s OEM-independent SmartMotion Server item to bring it to its Livebox Play TV system is an indication that there ’ s a drive among traditional entertainment networks and companies to make sure they don ’ t get left behind.
Exactly what can consumers finish with the Movea-enabled hardware? With the right set-top box and remote control, both of which are readily available for pre-order and set to ship in February, they could wave at their Televisions and utilize actions like twisting to control volume playback, on-screen menu product option, close and open apps and more. Likewise, the interface will allow audiences to connect with motion-controlled games, in a more casual version of what the Wii can complete through its gesture-based input devices.
Movea is a broad-based play to introduce movement control to any kind of device that wishes to include it, consisting of Windows Phone 8 and Android smartphones, Windows 8 tablets and note pads, and home entertainment and other CE gadgets. It likewise offers to semiconductor producers, so that motion intelligence could be constructed into gadgets at the processor level. Undoubtedly this is a space that ’ s producing a great deal of interest, beyond just the applications by big-name gamers like Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. Platform agnostic business like Movea, and Leap, which just today announced a new $ 30 million funding round and an offer that will see its hardware ship with ASUS computer systems, show we ’ ll probably see a lot more companies try to offer motion as a service, API or OEM hardware add-on for third-parties.
I still think that despite the method it has shown its viability with the Wii and Kinect, motion control is a difficult thing to offer to a broad customer base, specifically as a control system for TV material normally took care of via remote. In numerous ways, it ’ s still a tech that has novelty appeal and not much else, but as more business attempt to integrate it with even more typical tech like set-top boxes, we ’ ll get a much better idea of exactly how it can fare in regards to long-lasting adoption.

FlipSide case for iPhone packs stealthy game controls, plays on solar power (video)
The permanent challenge of developing an iPhone-friendly gamepad (or any sort of phone-oriented gamepad) is the bulk, either for a gargantuan case otherwise a separate controller. If Justice Frangipane’s team and iDevices have their means, that clunkiness will be a remote memory. Their proposed FlipSide case for iPhones (we see a prototype here) fixates Bluetooth 4.0 gamepad controls that remain clipped to the back when simply checking e-mail, but affixed to the front for playtime. They’ll save us from hunting down a wall outlet, too; the combination of a delicate solar cell and a thin movie battery from Infinite Power Solutions must keep the case powered up with even indoor lighting. The only real difficulty is getting the case produced, as Frangipane is looking for crowdfunding to make the FlipSide a reality. Offered his group makes its contribution target, though, there’s the prospect of an Android version– so those who don’t play the iOS means could still gain the rewards if they chip in at the source link.

Lytro Firmware Update Unlocks Guide Controls: Shutter Speed, ISO, And ND Filter
Today the Lytro Light Industry Camera is receiving a firmware update that unlocks manual controls such as ISO sensitivity and shutter performance.
But simply in case you sanctuary ’ t become aware of it yet, the Lytro is an advanced device. As an alternative of catching one moment, one angle, and one set of light, you catch everything within frame, and are able to change the focus of the image after the fact.
However there are 2 significant grievances with this brand-new innovation: one is that the images taken aren ’ t that high quality (currently simply 1080 × 1080) and that more severe photographers don ’ t have any type of manual controls over the device.
See, the Lytro is a bit like a Christmas present to a photographer. There are an entire brand-new set of guidelines, a completely brand-new world of photography to explore with this modern technology, and changing focus is just the beginning. However to make the Lytro available to everyone, from a pro to a novice, the initial implementation excluded any type of manual controls, like ISO or Shutter Performance.
With the firmware update, which you could access by plugging in your Lytro and clicking “ yes ” to the prompt, individuals will certainly now have full control over ISO level of sensitivity and shutter performance. Since these settings impact one yet another, the Lytro will automatically set the one the individual doesn ’ t change.
As an example, if you enhance ISO level of sensitivity, the Lytro will instantly decrease shutter rate, and vice versa. Nonetheless, photogs have the choice to change both, and the Lytro will permit for it.
The manual controls are accessed through a drop-down table within the user interface, and adjusted completely with touch controls. Along with ISO level of sensitivity and shutter rate, the update will additionally unlock automobile exposure lock and the neutral density filter, which is shown in a little ND icon above ISO and Shutter dials.
However, these opened controls don ’ t necessarily mean there will be brand-new modes besides the already-available Everyday and Innovative modes. Lytro still wishes to keep it easy for the noob photographers. This also indicates that individuals will certainly have to allow manual controls in the settings, as the business understands that just a subset of owners will wish to make use of manual controls.
All in all, this is meant to allow for much better low-light performance and the ability to take high-speed whirls, which proved to be the situation in my screening.
Note: Don’t hesitate to click around on these photos. You ’ ll adjust the focus.
Along with the new controls, Lytro is also revealing brand-new colors, and some brand-new accessories. Target will have an exclusive Moxi pink design, which has 8GB of interior storage. This is a part of Lytro ’ s recent retail expansion to Target, Amazon, Best Buy, and pick CityTarget areas. However the business is keeping the brand-new Seaglass green model (also 8GB) to itself as a Lytro.com holiday unique.
In terms of add-ons, you ’ ll discover a camera sleeve for $ 29.95 and a tour instance, complete with an add-ons pocketbook and magnetic folding cover, for $ 59.95.
