ASUS ‘We Transform’ Computex teaser leaves us waiting for more teaser videos

Just like last year, ASUS is filling time before the Computex trade show by posting teaser trailers. Sporting a “We Transform” tag, its first one for 2013 features the spun metal casings, touchscreen laptops, convertibles, tablets and phones we’ve become accustomed to from the company. So what’s next? The video doesn’t appear to provide any hints, however the press page linked below includes a countdown to ASUS’ press conference June 3rd, and blank spaces for four more videos to come. We’ll keep an eye out for anything else that fills in the blanks (US release info for the Transformer Book would do the trick), check the video after the break to “transform your expectations of technology.”

Dausen iPhone pico projector battery case at Computex 2012 (hands-on video)

It’s not the first iPhone 4/4S pico projector battery case we’ve come across here at Engadget, but we spotted this little number at Computex 2012 and just couldn’t resist sharing it with you. What makes this accessory a bit more unique is that it incorporates the latest in DLP technology from Texas Instruments. As such, it’s capable of projecting a 640×360-pixel image up to 70 inches across with 1000:1 contrast ratio. The 2200mAh battery lasts about 3 hours on a charge an can even top off your iPhone in a pinch. Additional features include a built-in speaker powered by a 0.5W audio amplifier. We spent a few minutes using the pico projector and while it works pretty much as advertised, it clearly struggled with the harsh lighting conditions of the show floor. Computex 2012 wrap-up

After getting our hands on more than three dozen Ultrabooks, tablets and plenty of other miscellany over an intense gadget-fueled week in Taipei, Computex is finally winding down, and we’re packing our bags for the 24-hour journey back to New York. There’s no question that Windows 8 stole the show, with hundreds of devices making an appearance both at flashy press events and on the exhibit floor — Release Preview in tow. We happened upon quite a few surprises on that front, including a touchscreen-based ASUS Zenbook UX21A and Intel’s prediction that the majority of next year’s Ultrabooks will be touch-enabled, along with the unique (and perhaps even slightly bizarre) TAICHI, which will change the way we interact with at least two clamshell models. We’ve barely scratched the surface here, however — you’ll find direct links to all of our Computex coverage just after the break.

It was last year that Intel chose Computex, a computer tradeshow in Taiwan, to introduce its Ultrabook concept to the world. Twelve months later, 110-plus models are in the pipeline, which meant the Taipei Convention Center was overrun by skinny, lightweight laptops. Make that skinny, touch-enabled laptops. Between those new Ivy Bridge chips and Microsoft putting the finishing touches on Windows 8, this week’s show was nothing if not a five-day-long wedding between two tech giants: almost every device on display here was a vehicle for showing off Microsoft’s glossy new OS. At every turn, a celebration of touchscreen notebooks.
With more than 30 hands-on posts this week, we can see where one Core i5 laptop might look like the next, or how you might have failed to keep up with Jonney Shih’s rapid-fire product announcements. Now that we’re wrapping up here in Taiwan, though, we’re ready to take a step back and think about what it is we just saw. Whether you felt overwhelmed by our wall-to-wall coverage or just need to catch up, we suggest you meet us past the break for a quick recap of all the new Ultrabooks. Oh, and if you’re in the market for a new laptop, you can check your trigger-happy finger at the door. With few exceptions, we’re not expecting these to go on sale until the fall, when Windows 8 is expected to start shipping.

When Intel first unveiled its grand plans for Ultrabooks at last year’s Computex, many of the fireworks were consciously reserved for Ivy Bridge-based variants in 2012 — well, they’re here. This year’s show in Taipei will show off the third generation of the skinny, MacBook Air-inspired platform, and Intel is toughening up the design requirements in the process. The thickness requirements are the same as last year, at 18mm for systems with screens under 14 inches and 21mm for bigger machines, but high-speed ports are now mandatory to get that coveted “Ultrabook” label and the full marketing weight of Intel’s $ 300 million Ultrabook Fund: if a PC doesn’t have either USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt, it’s out of the running. Intel also wants security built-in, rather than optional, as well as guarantees that a system is quick and responsive when it’s fully awake. Not that this would be terribly hard with the low-voltage Ivy Bridge processors launching at the same time, mind you.
Just to reinforce the importance of it all, Intel is noting that the flood of Ultrabooks is about to pick up in a big way as the category hits the mainstream. We were promised 75 Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks this year in a presentation back at CES; that number’s now up to 110, 30 of which will be Windows 8-friendly touchscreen models and another 10 opting for the convertible tablet route. At least some of those lightweight portables should pop up at Computex next week, and you can be sure we’ll be investigating as many of them as we can to see just how well Intel’s partners have advanced the game.

Microsoft finally debuted the next version of its Windows operating system, codenamed Windows 8, at D9 earlier today, and now it’s hitting up Computex over in Taipei with a partner preview event. We don’t know quite what will be revealed here, but the new Win 8 UI has a touch-friendly look designed specifically to make tablet users feel more at home, so a peek at new slate hardware might not be completely out of the question. MSI has snuck a couple of new tablets into Computex, which we’ve naturally dug up, dusted off, and covered in fingerprints. The WindPad Enjoy 10 is a 10-inch Android Gingerbread slate with relatively humble specs — 1024 x 768 resolution, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, and a 27.3WHr battery — but also a very modest asking price of $ 299. It comes with a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A8 (single core) processor that’s said to be able to play back 1080p video, and at least one of the dual 2 megapixel cameras should be able to record in 720p as well. Its smaller sibling, the Enjoy 7, spans 800 x 480 pixels across a 7-inch expanse and has a smaller 17.3WHr battery, but is otherwise identical. We’re promised an even lower price point for this smaller tablet, with both Enjoy models expected to begin mass production in July and hit the States in earnest either that month or soon thereafter. Releases in Europe and other nations are also planned shortly after the US gets a first bite of these intriguing Gingerbread concoctions.
MSI specifically pointed out to us that it preferred Android 2.3 over 3.0 for its broader compatibility and better stability. Alas, neither slate is licensed to access the Android Market, but the pre-production units we looked at had an APK installer on board and MSI promised to figure out a workaround to let you obtain apps. It wasn’t terribly clear how that’d be done, but at least the company has it in mind. As to build quality, the 795g Enjoy 10 felt great in the hand, its curvy and thin body proving easy to handle. We can’t really comment on the actual construction as what we were shown were early pre-production mockups designed to just give us a taste rather than the full enchilada. Weighing in at 395g, the Enjoy 7 features a similar penchant for curviness and, on a less happy note, glossiness. Both are smear magnets with a high sheen finish on the front. The metal backs are more demure, though. Check out the Enjoy 10 on video after the break.

Shuttle tablets at Computex 2011 (hands-on)

Computex 2011 is fast approaching here in Taipei, and today Shuttle introduced a trio of Android-based tablets to complement its fleet of small form factor computers. The 10-inch (WXGA) N10CN12 and 9-inch (XGA) N09CN01 models are both based on NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 CPU paired with 1GB RAM, and target the consumer market. The 8-inch (SVGA) V08CT01 — a ruggedized tablet for education — features an 800 MHz Texas Instruments Cortex A8 processor and 512MB of memory. Pricing and availability are still up in the air — no surprise considering the Froyo-running devices we handled still felt very much like prototypes. We love teasers, but the wait can be unbearable sometimes. Luckily, all it takes is a tweak in the URL to uncover ASUS’ upcoming Computex teaser pics ahead of time, as discovered by our eagle-eyed reader Anas. As you might have already figured out, the image on the left — which just went live — seems to be just a reminder of the Eee Pad MeMO’s June launch, though the words “A Tablet That Jumps Out at You” could also imply a device bearing 3D functionality of some sort. Maybe ASUS managed to upgrade said 7-inch Honeycomb tablet just in time? We shall see.
But the real meat here lies in the remaining image, which is scheduled to close the loop on the “Pad or Phone” teaser campaign this coming Sunday. What’s new is merely the intriguing line “How about Both?” below the old text, accompanying the silhouette of what appear to be a large tablet and a smaller phone-like device. Could this mean ASUS is toying with the idea of an Atrix-like docking combo, except the lapdock is instead just a tablet? We could well be stretching here, but hey, ASUS does say it wants to “break the rules,” right? Stay tuned as we’ll find out more at Computex 2011 next week.

ASUS preparing an ultraslim Eee PC ‘with a twist’ for Computex

ASUS’ week of merciless teasers continues today with a silhouette of what the company calls a “super-slim sensation [with] a twist.” It’s an Eee PC and there are no doubts about it being a netbook, but something about this evolutionary product won’t be quite the same as on its predecessors. Notebook Italia has dug up the above image, which looks like a match for ASUS’ shadow-obscured teaser and shows what may very well be the thinnest Eee PC we’ve yet seen. Last time ASUS was touting anything laptop-shaped that was quite so slim, it was the Neo smartbook prototype that never made it out of the labs, but this here cheese slicer looks very likely to be hitting the market shortly after Computex. Naturally, we’ll be in Taipei getting the lowdown for you, whatever happens.
