Nielsen: Android growing faster than Apple, both companies edge out competitors

Smartphone buyer's guide lineup

Fast payday loans For Every One

Nielsen’s latest report shows that as smartphone adoption proceeds to grow in the United States, Android and Apple’s iOS are rising in attraction, with Android holding a slight edge over its opponent. This popularity comes at the cost of smaller companies like Blackberry and Windows, which hold progressively receding portions of the expanding smartphone market. Smartphone adoption amongst United States subscribers passed the 50 percent mark in March, and has actually reached 54.9 percent as of June 2012. New adoption energy has stayed stable, with smartphones making up about two-thirds of all new purchases.

The report shows that Android and Apple are both growing within the expanding market, with Android at 51.8 percent and Apple’s iOS at 34.3 percent. …

Nokia uses ‘Smartphone beta’ website to take shots at mobile competitors

smartphone beta test

We’ve been expecting something big from Nokia for the American launch of the Lumia 900, and now we’re seeing the beginnings of a bold strategy in the form of the Smartphone Beta Test site. At the top of the page sits a video of Saturday Night Live alum Chris Parnell waiting impatiently for a clock to tick down to April 6th, underscored by a trio of “behind the scenes” videos poking fun at the fragility and antenna issues associated with Apple’s iPhone 4, and the lack of brightness on the screens of other competitors’ devices. The three videos feature our protagonist, Gary, trying to convince some marketing people of the phones’ design flaws, while they call him a baby and recommend investing in mortage-backed securities.

Apple’s Sir Jonathan Ive: our competitors have ‘completely the wrong goals’

London’s favorite only remaining evening free-sheet has snagged an interview with Apple design maven Sir Jonathan Ive. In the piece he talks about being thrilled and humbled by his recent Knighthood, the importance of his London upbringing and why Apple’s competitors can’t win. Pointing to a desire not to make “genuinely better” products, Cupertino’s unnamed rivals instead are “interested in doing something different, or want to appear new,” which he says is the wrong goal. The difference is that he and his team aren’t tied to a price, a schedule or a marketing scheme — which he believes “have scant regard for people who use the product.” There’s also a barbed reference to consumers being able to sense “great care in the design and when there is cynicism and greed” in products on the market. Head on down to the source link to read more, including his frustration with designers who “wag their tails in his face” — who knew designers had tails, eh?

Envia’s GM-backed battery delivers huge energy density, lower costs, headaches for competitors

If you’re one of those worried about the battery on your expensive EV running out, look away now. Envia has unveiled a new cell that boasts a record-breaking energy density of 400Wh/kg (most currently offer between 100 and 150). It’s estimated that when commercialized, this could bring the cost of a 300-mile range EV down to as little as $ 20,000. The performance gains come from a special manganese-rich cathode and silicon-carbon nano-composite anode combination. The battery maker is also partly owned by GM, which unsurprisingly means we’re likely to see these very cells in its EVs in the future. Perhaps with the right choice of upholstery, we might see even better savings? Want to know more? Tap the fully charged press release parked just after the break.

Jobs suggests that competitors’ device activation tallies may be inflated, Google quickly responds

Not satisfied to simply trump Google’s daily device activation numbers, Steve Jobs added insult to injury at the Apple press conference this afternoon, claiming that unspecified “friends” have been counting handset upgrades in their statistical totals and not just newly activated phones. As you might imagine, Google was not terribly pleased at this turn of events, and issued the following retort: “The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services.” Now, we don’t honestly know who’s telling the truth here and we’d like to be able to take both companies at their word, but this isn’t the first time even during this particular Apple shindig that questionable claims were thrown out as fact.

[Thanks, Kamal]
