Apple Thunderbolt Software Update causing sporadic errors, frozen boot screens

Apple Thunderbolt Software Update causing sporadic errors, frozen boot screens

Software updates can be a bit of a mixed bag — just ask anyone who’s ever been on the other side of a botched firmware install. While many users react with itchy trigger fingers to download the goods, the more prudent (read: hardened) prefer to hold off in the event potentially crippling bugs creep on out. So, it comes as no great surprise that Apple’s recently issued Thunderbolt update version 1.2 — intended to add support for a Gigabit Ethernet Adapter — is subjecting a portion of frustrated users to unexpected errors and frozen boot screens. Currently, the only officially sanctioned remedy seems to be a fresh install of OS X Lion. So, if you haven’t already taken the plunge on this minor feature add-on, you’d be well advised to wait it out.

That’s Terrible News: Oral Sess Now Causing More Throat Cancer Than Smoking Cigarettes

oral-sess-cancer.jpg

Damn what I wouldn’t give for chest hair like that.

According a recent study, oral sex may be causing more cases of throat cancer that smoking, all thanks to HPV (human papillomavirus). Ha — and people wonder why I’m afraid to engage in any sexual behavior! Kidding, it’s because I’ve never done it before and privates are icky.

The researchers hypothesize that the virus spreads predominately via oral sex, and that it may already account for more cases of throat cancer than smoking.

The authors write:

If recent incidence trends continue, the annual number of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers [which mostly affect men] is expected to surpass the annual number of cervical cancers by the year 2020.

The medical community encourages everyone to get the HPV vaccination unless you’re a terrible parent who’s convinced vaccinating your child against a sexually transmitted disease IS GONNA MAKE THEM RUN OUT AND HAVE THE SEX. “Well, I’ve got no chance of catching HPV, and it’s practically the only STD and the one I heard causes pregnancy, so…ignore the braces and drive me to makeout point?

But They’re Supposed To Make You LAZY: Lazy Cakes Causing A Stir Across America

lazy-cakes.jpg

Lazy Cakes are $ 3 prepackaged brownies with a bunch of natural herbs and other booboo tasting shit baked in to make you relax. If you can’t tell from Lazy Larry the mascot and drug innuendo, they’re marketing like weed brownies, except with no weed — just “natural ingredients like Velarian Root and Rose Hips while utilizing Melatonin, a substance your body makes naturally to help you relax.” But they are NOT for children, and a bunch of city governments want them banned altogether. Hoho, contraband! *mashing brownie up ass like a suppository*

That’s the problem, according to Fall River Mayor William Flanagan.

“These brownies are laced with melatonin,” he said at a news conference Thursday. “Melatonin is a sleep aid.”

There’s about eight grams of melatonin in each of the so-called brownies. That’s reportedly four times the recommended dosage for an adult.

“Even though the product says it’s not intended for children’s use, it’s psychedelic packaging and it’s cartoon character, known as Lazy Larry, indicate otherwise,” he said.

Children aside, on their website the company advertises the cakes to adults hopped up on energy drinks as a way to “come down.” Because that roller coaster’s gotta be good for your body! But seriously — who the hell needs help being lazy? I could be lazy 24-7 NO F***IN’ PROBLEM. No, if you have trouble being lazy I’m afraid you’ve got a much bigger problem on your hands. Probably a coke one.

Potential 3DS Design Flaw Causing Screen Scratches, Cracked D-Pads

You would think that Nintendo would have foreseen all the design issues of the 3DS, well, years ago. The company has been working with clamshell handhelds for over 30 years. However some 3DS owners are reporting that their top screens are getting scratched and some d-pads are cracking.

The common thought in the Nintendo support forums is that most of these scratches are really lines caused by oil and humidity building up when the unit is closed. Users report that they’re easily whipped off at first but become more permanent as they build up over time. Some turn into scratches as well. Users have resorted to sandwiching a cleaning cloth between the screens when closing the 3DS.

SlashGear also dug up a cracked d-pad, apparently the from the same design flaw as the lines and scratches. It seems the rubber stripping around the 3DS is too thin. So thin that the top screen is close enough to the bottom to result in oil build up and a cracked d-pad. Chances are Nintendo will resolve customer issues on an individual basis. Of course most 3DSs are under warranty and most retailers will probably still accept them as returns. Still, if this is happening to your 3DS, let Nintendo know so the full scoop is known and can be properly resolved.

Momentus XT hybrid drive causing headaches, Seagate working to fix

All’s not well in hybrid solid state storage land, as owners of Seagate’s Momentus XT are facing serious issues with their drives — despite glowing initial reviews, a number of long-term users claim that the drives chirp, crash, stutter, and freeze with alarming regularity, particularly when installed in a Mac. Seagate forumgoers speculate these are symptoms of the XT’s magnetic platters spinning down inappropriately, due to an overzealous power management scheme. That’s the bad news, but the good news is this: Seagate’s owning up to the issues, and is actively involved in getting them fixed. So far, a pair of new firmware updates have addressed some symptoms, a third is on the way, and a Seagate engineer known only as STX_NB is proactively chatting with affected customers about possible fixes. That’s what we call technical support — take notes, tech companies.

Massive Solar Flare Causing Communications Problems In China

Nasa’d

A recent solar flare, the strongest in four years, is apparently giving China a bit of a headache. Astronomers there have reported a disruption in radio communications in the country’s southern regions. The Sun giveth, and the Sun taketh away.

Nasa says the flare was of the X-class, which is the most powerful class of flare. The sudden jet of solar… stuff flew off the star at a cool 560 miles per second. Per second! The airplane you use to visit Mom & Dad for the holidays has a max speed of 560 miles per hour.

If the flare were to travel around the circumference of the earth it would do so in about 44 seconds. My PC takes longer than that to cold boot.

PS3 firmware 3.41 causing hard drive upgrade problems?

Seems like folks are always having problems after they upgrade their PS3 firmware, but we can’t say we’ve experienced any problems. Firmware 3.41 seemed like a minor update that added a new “You May Like” section to the PlayStation Store, but some people are saying that it’s been causing problems for anyone trying to upgrade the hard drive in their console.

There’s a 30-page plus thread on the official PlayStation forums where folks are venting about issues upgrading their hard drive. They’ve been getting a “no applicable data” error after trying to install the update, which has left them with a non-working PS3 and, in some cases, a corrupted original drive.

Apparently the issue may have something to do with a newly discovered feature of the 3.41 update that allows for more incremental patches. That might explain why the problem only seems to be affecting PS3s where the firmware is stored on the hard drive instead of the system’s memory. Sony hasn’t chimed in yet, but hopefully they offer a fix soon.

PS3 firmware 3.41 said to be causing hard drive upgrade problems

The recently released PS3 firmware 3.41 seemed to just be a minor update that added a new “You May Like” section to the PlayStation Store, but it looks like it’s been causing nothing but headaches for anyone trying to upgrade the hard drive in their console. As a 30-page strong thread on the official PlayStation forums reveals, folks upgrading their hard drive have been getting a “no applicable data” error after trying to install the update, which has left them with a non-working PS3 and, in some cases, a corrupted original drive. According to CVG, the issue may have something to do with a newly discovered feature of the 3.41 update that allows for more incremental patches, which might also explain why the problem only seems to be affecting PS3s where the firmware is stored in on the hard drive instead of the system’s memory. As for Sony, it hasn’t offered an official explanation just yet, but all indications are that it’s a bug and not an intentional blocking of hard drive upgrades — at least we hope it is. Head on past the break for a video of the problem.
