Anxiety About Math Causes Pain-Like Brain Response

I was never good at math and I’m still not now. 5 x 5 = 30. Okay that time I actually got it right, usually I do not though. And now researchers have actually uncovered that anxiety about doing mathematics causes a mind response just like one when experiencing bodily damage. DO YOU HEAR THAT, MS. McKINLEY? You were eliminating me the whole time!
” For someone who has math stress and anxiety, the anticipation of doing mathematics propels a comparable mind reaction as when they experience pain– say, burning one’s hand on a hot cooktop,” said Sian Beilock, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago and a leading specialist on math anxiousness.
Remarkably, the specialists located it was the anticipation of having to do math, and not in fact doing mathematics itself, that appeared like discomfort in the mind. “The mind activation does not happen throughout mathematics performance, suggesting that it is not the mathematics itself that harms; rather the anticipation of mathematics is unpleasant …”
Pay attention: I find the anticipation of doing math and the actual DOING of math equally distressing. To me it resembles having your head in a vice and pounding your fingers in an auto door over and over and over. While on fire. And being eaten alive by tigers. No– ants. It’s like that, but way even worse and a lot more unpleasant.
Thanks to Essi, who’s mind has a similar feedback to doing ANY kind of work. Exact same here!

Microsoft inks Android patent deal with Itronix, causes more heads to explode

We’ve already noted our slip into Bizarro World, a strange and topsy-turvy land where — thanks to patent-infringement claims — Microsoft strikes licensing deals with Android device makers. Redmond has used a carrot-and-stick strategy thus far, suing competing manufacturers (Barnes and Noble, Motorola) while reaching a protective royalty agreement with HTC, which, not coincidentally, also makes Windows Phones. Today, another company joins the licensee list: General Dynamics Itronix, known for its rugged computers, some of which do run Windows. Neither company offered much in the way of details, other than declaring that Itronix will pay royalties, but we’ve no reason to believe it’s too different from HTC’s arrangement. See the press release after the break for an excellent example of terse, unrevealing business-speak.

iPad 2 international launch causes people to line up in line all over again

You may or may not know this, but the iPad 2 became available in 22 countries today, and from the looks of it above (snapped at London’s Regent Street store), waiting in line was part of the deal. Now, we have this theory that people love to line up for anything, so we’re not going to draw any conclusions about how dreamy the product is, but please, if you shot any line photos today, feel free to send them our way and we’ll throw them in our post after the break.

HP’s ‘Everybody On’ ad goes to the Grammys, causes nationwide cringing
HP told us to watch for a special new campaign during the Grammys, so watch we did — only to find this commercial and occasional on-stage pimping of the HP TouchPad. The latter is standard business practice, to be sure, but the former? Well, words (nearly) escape us. You really have to watch it for yourself, but just imagine a butchering of Lou Reed’s classic (though far, far overused) “Walk On The Wild Side,” where tales of doping and cross dressing have been replaced with tales of… Tweeting. And Digging. And other really trite stuff. The cinematography and general message of the commercial is actually spot on, but it all gets crushed under the weight of this bad musical decision. HP played this same video at the event on Wednesday, but little did we know it would be the kick-off of the company’s marketing onslaught.
We’re honestly taken aback by how off key (no pun intended) this ad is. You would think after all the bad press Palm got on its previous big ad campaign (and even after some not-so-gentle advice) the folks in charge would think twice about something this potentially polarizing. We won’t lie — we’re disappointed. Both by HP / Palm, and Lou Reed. All of you guys… back to the drawing board.
Look on the bright side, though — at least you’ve got about six months to wash this out of people’s brains.
