Cast AR hands-on with Jeri Ellsworth at Maker Faire 2013
When Valve‘s first hardware hire, Jeri Ellsworth, tweeted back in February that she was fired from the company, we were disappointed but also intrigued by what she meant by “time for new exciting projects.” Well we finally saw what she’s been up to here at at Maker Faire 2013. It’s called Cast AR, and it’s a pair of 3D augmented-reality glasses that she and former Valve programmer Rick Johnson were working on at Valve before they left.
The model we saw is still in the early prototype stages, but the concepts are already in place. Perched atop a pair of active shutter glasses are a couple of miniature LCD projectors, which bounce images from a connected computer onto a special reflective surface at a 120Hz refresh rate. A camera module sits on the eyewear’s bridge and monitors an array of infrared LEDs embedded in the reflective surface. This allows for quick and accurate head tracking. Join us after the break for our impressions and stay tuned for a video interview with Jeri Ellsworth.

Amazing crowdsourced music video uses thousands of mouse cursors as cast members

If there were any sticking around doubt that the songs video has found a new house away from the television display, below’s a clip that MTV couldn’t play even if it wished to. For Light Light’s new video for “Kilo,” the Netherlands-based band enlisted Roel Wouters to create an browser-based experience that tracks your cursor motions and later on integrates them into the video itself for future playback. As instructed by messages at the top of the display, hundreds of cursors form patterns by sticking within standards, obscure band members’ faces by serving as a collective mask, and develop an opponent for a boxer on the other side of the display. Play the video for yourself at www.donottouch.org.

Conceptual Star Wars Episode VII Poster With Aged Cast

This is the conceptual Star Wars Episode VII movie poster created by illustrator Adam Schickling imaging the cast from the original trilogy all grown up. It looks like Adam was pretty kind to Carrie Fisher, because that is NOT what I remember her looking like last. Chewbacca? He looks the same as the first day he and Han Solo ever met. Billy Dee Williams? That handsome devil makes me want to go chug an ice-cold Colt 45. WHICH I MIGHT.
Thanks to PYY, who agrees Colt 45 is actually pretty terrible but Billy Dee Williams makes it sound like the best damn drink on earth. That’s it, I’m biking to the beer store.![]()

Cast Metal Companion Cube Engagement Ring

First the Lord of the Rings earrings, then the fingernail art, now a Portal engagement ring made by the folks at Custom Made — it really is turning into lady’s day on Geekologie. And you know what? I say we embrace it. Maybe later we can take turns putting makeup on each other and stay up late talking about boys! OMG, so you know that Billy in our English class? I hit him in the head with a rock. What a cutie! (I’m new to this)
Hit the jump for one more shot, but check out Custom Made’s site to see shots of the whole design and casting process.

Need To Pump Up Your iPhone Voice Recordings? The Pint-Sized iRig MIC Cast Is Now Shipping
The microphone in the iPhone 4S is pretty good — I have found it to capture excellent quality on all my consumer-ish recordings and videos. Of course, that is not to say it could not be improved.
When the iRig MIC Cast was announced at CES this year, I was pretty excited. I have gotten a lot of use out of the original iRig MIC and this miniaturized version seemed poised to make my travel recordings an even more portable affair.
Thankfully, it did not disappoint. The mic’s dual gain setting really extended the abilities of my iPhone for my consumer Video/Audio recordings, which is especially impressive considering the microphone is about the size of a half dollar. The new iRig also comes with a desktop stand to prop my phone while I’m recording, and I while didn’t use it too often, it could definitely come in handy for sit-down interviews and the like. Oh, and in case you felt some weird urge to do so, it works just fine when taking phone calls too.
While I am not sure what other non-iOS devices are actually supported, I was able to get it to work with things like the Korg Kaossilator 2 — a nifty bonus for sure.
What can I say, I am a fan of this little gadget in all of it’s portable glory. It’s shipping today and costs $ 39.99/€29.99. More info at www.irigmiccast.com

RIM claims that Apple is trying to cast illicit proxy votes for nano-SIM standard, protests to ETSI

The battle over the future of the SIM card heated up yesterday when Nokia threatened to withhold ‘essential’ patents if Apple got its way, and RIM is now lashing out at the Cupertino company as well. RIM claims in a letter that it’s observed Apple representatives changing their company affiliation, allegedly in order to deviously cast proxy votes at an upcoming ETSI meeting. RIM claims that three supposed Apple employees have registered for Bell Mobility, KT Corp., and SK Telekom, and that they shouldn’t be permitted to vote since ETSI rules prohibit voting by proxy. If it’s true, it’s the latest example of the companies using extreme rhetoric and actions to influence the ETSI and the nano-SIM standard. RIM has asked that the ETSI…

‘Hugo’ director Martin Scorsese, cast explain the advantages of shooting movies in 3D (video)
We’ll have to wait until this weekend to find out if Martin Scorsese’s Hugo takes home any hardware from the Academy Awards, but we’ve got an early preview of one the Blu-ray 3D release’s special features right here. Press play to hear the director explain why 3D affects the storytelling by bringing in qualities usually found in the theater to film, as well as comments from actors Christopher Lee and Sascha Baron Cohen. Scorsese explains “We see in 3D, we see in space… most of us do. Space is part of our lives. It means something. I think, for the individual person who has a vision of telling a story through images, how that person uses space — that extra element, that extra dimension — to tell a story is very, very important.” Adapted from a book inspired by filmmaker Georges Méliès, the movie hits stores February 28th — check out the trailer after the break.
